The U.S. Army Jumpmaster School. We got it done! I have to say, this school turned out to be harder than I anticipated. I had been wanting to attend this school for a long time now, and finally jumped on an opportunity to go. It is great training and absolutely worthwhile, but it isn't easy. Here is some insight in how the school goes, what you can expect, and some tips for success! Let me know if you have any questions and if you have info or tips yourself that you'd like to share, please do!

And with everything else in the military, the real learning starts from the moment you graduate and never stops from there. The school is great but it’ll definitely be a fair few ops before you actual feel comfortable with it. I was an airborne instructor from 2014-2016. Learned continually every single day what it truly meant and saw some of the craziest things you never thought a jumper could do 😂

Congrats! A great Job! Sounds like a professionally run Army Course! Unique personal insight: Early in my career; I was one of the “jumpers” I was not airborne qualified. I was a random private on a detail. The instructors read us a Riot Act on not helping or assisting in anyway. They were micro (looking down, tilting your head, moving your hands, adjusting the harness) in their brief. It was serious! We(the jumpers) were terrified! One dude passed that first day.

You motivate me so much, I am currently at the United States Drill Sergeant Academy and have used your videos to get better at rucking and what gear I need so on and so forth to better prepare and help me here at this school anyways after my time on the trail I’m going to do my best to get into Airborne school and do the one thing I’ve been terrified of doing my entire career. You’ve had a big impact on my decision to do this and I’m gonna face my fears and get it done! Congratulations on Jump master

I’d rather do Airborne 10 times than be a Drill. If you can handle Drill school, you can handle anything! Don’t worry about heights, it’s totally different when your under a parachute than standing on a tall building. Stare at the horizon, until you exit….. you’ll be fine.

Congrats Gritty! Special Forces units can also hold their own JM course. An A-team will be chosen, maybe two or even a company effort. I even think I’ve seen 3rd Group HHC hold a JM course. I went through JM twice only because there was no aircraft available for PWAC, they give you a slip to come back another day but then I deployed and never got to do PWAC. A year went by and the slip wasn’t good anymore, I had to do a day 1 class. That was conducted by an 82nd MTT that came to 3rd Group….my second time was with USASOC. It wasn’t a hard course at all. After graduation, I headed out to Camp Mckall and got my first JM duties. Jumpers, Hit it! I loved being a JM on the CASA 212….. jumping JM, or static…both fun! I’m glad I’ve never got to see a Towed Parachutist. It happens! Make sure when you perform your JM duties it’s correctly written on the manifest. I’ve had JM duties with Mass Tactical not written properly. It’s makes a difference, because SF units don’t do Mass Tac jumps, and 5 Mass Tacs are a requirement to get your Star and wreath. Or you’ll jump combat equipment but it’s written as an Admin Jump. Or you’ll get 3 jumps in one day and only credited for 1…. For pay it’s no big deal but when you’re chasing jumps for your Star ⭐️, it’s a biggie. My only regret was not making 100 jumps before I retired. Only 82 jumps, for the 16 years on jump status. No rush on PWAC?!? Lol…. If you jump CASA on St Mere, your first command is 6 minutes while you’re still on the ground, you better be done with actions in the aircraft in 3 minutes….That DZ comes up quick. Don’t worry, you’ll still see your 1 minute and 30 second markers.

I graduated from the USASOC jump master course during the end of last year. Go to jump master with a clear mind and nothing crazy on your plate to deal with. You need 100% focus and clarity of mind to pass this school. There are no relaxed or easy days, It is a shot gun blast of information given to you every day and you need to take notes and retain it. When at JM, you should only be eating, sleeping, studying, and preparing for whats next to come. When it comes to JMPI, practice, practice practice, continue to study your nomenclature, shadow box your JMPI sequence. Come in during study hall. LISTEN to what they instructors tell you to fix during your practice, even if you think it's small or little corrections, because during testing if they see it they'll gig you on it. You need all 5 of your JMPI attempts, I passed on my third try. Overall a mentally demanding school. PWAC is fun and we got to release paratroopers from black hawks using a VIRS DZ we set up. Glad i passed on my first try though.

I did the 82nd jumpmaster course in December 1991 (passed on reentry in January 1992); JMPI was the last portion of the course for us; sounds like the sequence in your course was a little different. Also, there was no pre-test; we only got two chances in the course for each test and one chance on JMPI at reentry. PWAC was the most fun part for me too! Thanks for sharing.

Did you do a culmination? Check AC, JMPI your jumper, do actual live JM duties in the aircraft in flight and put your jumper out the door? As I recall in my class we did race tracks over the DZ for each JM and their jumper. Good way to pop that JM cherry. I was in a USASOC course so might be different or not done that way anymore. Just curious.
