You've previously said that the M1 Garand is the oldest rifle to still be a viable/practical weapon. What about the M1 makes it so, and why don't other semi-automatics of the era (Remington model 8 for example) make the cut?

M-1 .30 carbine with rimless ammo, was a replacement for pistols. Most soldiers could not use the 1911 because of a lack of training and accuracy. The .30 [ 7.62mm x 33mm] carbine was possibly one of the earliest PDW, self defence weapon. .30 calibre was as powerful as a .45 Colt Auto and had longer range. And was much easier to train people to shoot accurately because 1911 pistols had to much muzzle climb, recoil and short sights. Carbine was designed to be light and was generally preferred to the Thompson due to light weight. And less climb with recoil. The carbine barrel was more in line with the shoulder. And the M-1 stock gave it more stability. Most pistols push barrels up when recoiling due to alignment difference with the hand grip. This can be demonstrated with the Kriss .45 submachine gun which lines up the barrel and pistol grip and the AR-15. The .30 carbine ammo is a little shorter than .300 Blackout but could be less powerful than 300BO due to chamber pressure. The main reliability problem for the M-1 carbine was flimsy magazines. Many are now old and may have cheap parts. The .45 Thompson also had more muzzle climb with full auto. So the M1 carbine was more manageable for poorly trained soldiers. The .30 carbine was not a main section weapon combat weapon. It was PDW defence for specialists that had other gear to carry and were not in the front line. Such as radio operators, , officers, NCOs, LMG and mortar crew. . The 30 carbine was popular for its light weight and ease of use. New carbines with new magazines were more reliable. They we mass produced for wartime issue. Long term service life was not a major factor. The carbine was also much cheaper than the .45 Thomson SMG. The carbine was not an alternative for the much more powerful Garand battle rifle. Making an M-1 carbine in .30 06 rem was pointless. The Garand was already available in that calibre. The Garand could have a shorter barrel for a heavy carbine version but would have been to heavy for its PDW role. Garand and M-1 .30 carbine had some common features. A better option for a battle rifle would have been a Garand with a 20 round removable magazine. Also a .280 calibre could have been a better option for Garand's but MacArthur wanted a full sized .30 06, full calibre battle rifle and not an intermediate .280 type of ammunition with less weight and recoil. The Garand with .30 06 also matched ammo with Browning BARs and Browning .30 06 light machine guns. So it was more practical with ammo. So the US army went into WW2 and Korea with an intermediate calibre rifle and replaceable magazines. There may have been an idea the M-1 carbine ammo could have come standard in a disposable magazine. Plenty of magazine were supplied but probably not enough for them to be completely deposable. Using old M-1 carbines now does not fairly match new WW2 M-1 carbines with new springs and new magazines. With larger intermediate ammunition, more strength, pistol grip and full auto option, the m-1 carbine would have had most of the features of an assault rifle which would have been usable for front line infantry. And probably a lighter, more accurate, cheaper and better replacement for the Thompson .45 SMG with less weight and muzzle climb. There was no practical need for a 30 06 rifle using the .30 carbine system. The post war M-2 carbine could have had better and larger 30 round magazines, intermediate ammo, full auto option and pistol grip. It could have bee an assault rifle. The Browning .30 06 LMG was also much cheaper than Thompsons. The M-14 would have been a better option for a Garand. Due to pre war features of the Garand did not suit WW2 battle conditions as well as it could have with replaceable 20-30 round magazines. The post war M-14 was meant to replace SMGs, LMGs, PDWs and carbines but was a poor compromise. The small ammo of the AR-15 assault rifle was more powerful because it could fire high pressure ammunition at higher velocities. So it was more deadly and accurate than M-1 .30 ammo. .High pressure 300 Blackout ammunition could have been a better combat round for a stronger built M-1 carbine. Or a M-1 carbine with longer cartridge. The M-1 carbine was excellent for its PDW purpose. And some frontline troops liked to use it instead of the Garrand,1911 and Thompson.

I hear the problem with M1 carbine reliability is that it requires lots of oil and fresh magazines, The magazines where considered disposable, that the G.I.s would throw out their mags as soon as a new supply of mags were available

I am with you guys. Forget the electronic locking mechs. They fail, they fail hard, and many don't have access to the battery from the outside. Dial safes usually start failing and you can tell by the mechanism starting to stick or even be off the set numbers [sloppy], giving you warning, AND its easier to fix because you can still get into the safe to fix it instead of having to drill it out.

As for improving an M-1 Garand... Tanker model with synthetic stock! Lighter than you would imagine it to be and if you have one with a properly bent Op rod, totally reliable.

My father had a 30 carbine every time I shot it, it never had any problems other than sending the bolt home with a magazine when inserted which was kind of a convenient malfunction. Had about a 12-in spread at 200 yd. probably wasn't the most lethal at that range but could probably cause a decent boo boo. From what I've heard about m1 carbine the biggest issue with reliability is the springs and weather they have been replaced or not.

Ok, here's my big scary story about flying with guns, condensed as much as possible: We got bumped from a flight. Maintenance issues forced them to use a smaller plane. We missed our connection. It took 2 hours to get rebooked, then 4 hours of waiting for the new flight, and there was no way to get to our destination. The closest they could get us was 300 miles away, many hours later than planned, and then we drove 5 hours to our destination. We arrived at our destination 12+ hours behind schedule. The WORST PART? They shipped our checked bags on our original flight, to our original destination, on time. Yes, including my gun case with 48 pounds of guns and ammo. Solution? Call my Mom, ask her to go to the airport, and get my guns. "In can't get past security without a ticket!" Actually, baggage claim is outside of security. "They won't let me take your gun case!" Please Mom, just try, ok? You live 20 minutes from the airport. SHE LITERALLY WALKED IN, GRABBED MY GUN CASE OFF THE CAROUSEL, AND WALKED OUT WITH IT! Yes, seriously. No, it wasn't even supposed to be on the carousel in the first place. Nobody was watching, nobody said anything, nobody stopped her, there were no security precautions at all. And that's the story of how my Mom saved my guns by stealing them from an airport.

Easy to retry a failed combo. Good enough for kids. Get the big box big enough for your bedside pistol AND CCW pistol. If you are leaving for awhile stick your guns in the “real” safe.

I dunno about flying, but here in Canada as long as it's non restricted you can ship whatever firearm right to the recipients door. You should of course try to make sure they are someone who can own firearms, but that's basically just an email with the PAL in it or just simply the number for purchasing from any licensed retailer. You also can't put any marking on the shipping box that say it's a gun so the post man is oblivious. Only people who know are the X-ray guys at the mail centers. Shipped off a 1960s K31 in a cardboard box just last Friday.

I have an m1 carbine with an OG WW2 15 round mag and a 60's era 30 rounder... the 15 rounder tended to jam the gun up at least once every 10 rounds, while the 30 rounder was considerably more reliable... i recently replaced the main spring in the bolt and i actually havent had a single malfunction throughout at least 400 round when i use the 30 round magazine, and only a couple with my 15, which has a worn out spring anyway. TLDR: if your m1 carbine isnt working good find some quality magazines and check your springy bits.

The FedEx thing. The law, USC922(e) FYI, says they cannot "require or cause" anything to indicate there is a gun in a package/luggage. They're reading it as they are causing a package to be shipped with an indication. I'd much rather them be that uptight about it. I've had to correct a few airlines on this while flying because they wanted to tape the firearm card you fill out to the outside of my gun case. www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/922

Trying to take a guy seriously on technical comparisons is trickier than I expected when there's a blur over his nuts. I can't be sure that it's less difficult than without the blur, but I'm going to minimize and just listen anyway.

M1 carbine should have been in 30 or 35 Remington instead of 30 carbine

M1 Carbine? Why the hell not put .30 through the Grease Gun platform? That's pretty reliable and it's got more firepower for the same recoil. Add a couple inches of barrel, and give it better sights and you're good to go. It's more compact than the Carbine. And cheaper. And box mags like the m3 pattern were reliable to base a .30 carbine version on (the M1 mags were it's reliability weakpoint). Then again why not chamber the M1 in .357 magnum and pair it with revolvers. In all seriousness. The 357 was around back then, and it's accurate enough. But a "utterly reliable" gun to issue to people? Seriously an M1 Garand model with an extended clip and internals to carry it. Maybe 12 shots. And a faster loading mechanism, probably a bolt hold open that will snap over the rounds when depressed, but not fly into battery until manually released. No garand thumb means faster reloading, you slam it in and press a button in one smooth motion. ...Extending the ammo capacity while still using clips (not mags) would've been a major improvement. Simple and reliable. And practically doubles the effectiveness of the weapon for combat encounters, if a soldier is expending 3-6 rounds per attack. If you fire 5 or 6 then yes you are still loaded, but the gun is practically bolt action now if you are Required to fire. With even a few more rounds to the capacity you can resolve Two attacks, or attack and counterattack, and the soldier has more flexibility to choose when they are going to expose themselves for a reload.

My comment was about the practicality of doing such a thing, not a question about the Peltier effect. Thanks anyways, Tips.
