What really amazes me about Margret is that she didn't want her granddaughters to go through what she went through. Both Margret and Elizabeth stood up to Henry together and refused to let him send either Margret or Mary off to be married until they were matured enough. For someone that fiction shows as heartless and cold it shows that she actually wasn't a horrible person. It really shows her protective side for her granddaughters. If she was as cold as ambitious as Philippa Gregory makes out this would never have happened

Thanks Claire. I was always appalled when Margaret being taken as a bride so young by someone in his late twenties didn't wait for her to mature a few years before doing the deed. Poor girl being only 13 when delivering her baby was nearly ripped in two and never wss able to conceive again. Barbaric!

She left this world at a happy time. She made it to see her legacy pass his crown on to his son without any strife or bloodshed and she saw Henry viii's coronation with his new wife and she probably thought that all would be well from here on out, and in a way it probably was a good idea she did go when she did because her job was done and she had accomplished so much in life by her son being crowned and starting a new dynasty. I'm sure she was so proud!! Without her we wouldn't have known any of these interesting people.

Wonderful video as always! Margaret really has been vilified in The White Queen, The White Princess, and now The Spanish Princess. And it's all been to absolve male historical figures of wrong doing or just to create more drama. It's really sad considering what an important and influential figure she is.

@RMAdams87
@RMAdams87 5 жыл бұрын
@@leanie9660 I'm referring to the TV shows, though Margaret's book from that series is pretty unflattering as well. The TV shows aren't from any one POV. The actions of the characters are displayed. Margaret is shown arranging the deaths of the princes in the Tower rather than Richard III. She also kills Jasper as well as Dudley. For some reason, she's also presented as antagonistic toward Elizabeth of York and Catherine of Aragon while none of her positive relationships are shown or in the case of Cecily of York, shown very little. The vast majority of her positive influences in England are left out or negatively framed. She dies alone without getting to see her grandson's coronation. This isn't a POV issue. This is Margaret being vilified by a Richardian.
@poetryqn
@poetryqn 5 жыл бұрын
@@RMAdams87 , I was with you until you blamed Gregory's poor history on her being a Ricardian. She writes romantic fiction. She is most assuredly NOT a historian, despite all her crowing about her deep research. Don't get me started. I see her name and the history lover in me begins to gnash her teeth in frustration. There's an entire audience out there who are getting the wrong ideas because she's far more interested in book sales than the known facts. The assassination of Margaret's character is but the tip of the iceberg.

That's because all those shows were based off of books by Philippa Gregory and Philippa Gregory is a shit history writer. She has a way of making me hate the protagonists like i've never seen before. First time reading "The Other Boleyn Girl", and the first thing I find out about Mary Boleyn is that she hates her sister and wishes her death. That's not a great way to introduce your MC.

Actually, it is a indeed very sad story. Usually she should have lived in her husband's household until mature enough to bear children, most husbands respected that too, but her husband was impatient and consumed the marriage as soon as physically possible with her. Some accounts show that she gave birth under great difficulties and that even the midwives attending her didn't think she or the child would make it up until she showed them otherwise. However, the fact that she had given birth at an age at which her body might have not been mature enough for it yet, and the great trauma that may have caused to her body is named as the reason for her never becoming pregnant again with any of her husbands afterwards.

Even though it was common to marry young (as by 15 you were technically halfway in your lifetime) it would be normal to wait for the bride to mature but he either couldn't wait (maybe to have an heir). Perhaps because of that she was never able to have any more children. Hence why she put so much effort into her son

Lady Margaret Beaufort sounds like a fascinating woman in a time where women were not seen as much more than pawns to be traded amongst men (especially amongst the nobility). To have a child at 13 is mind boggling by today’s standards, but perhaps was (amongst nobility) more common at that time. I’m glad that the primary resource describing the ordinances of setting out the baby’s nursery and how the church should be set out for the christening. Gives historians a great insight into her thoughts. Thanks for another wonderful video, and I really like the top you’re wearing!

I'm so glad that Claire has done a tribute to Margaret Beaufort. She is, after all, the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty. And she campaigned for the education of girls as well as boys; it was partly due to her efforts that Queen Elizabeth I and other highborn women of her generation were so well educated. Also, Margaret, mindful of the fact that she'd been forced to marry a man twice her age when she was 12 (and that the resultant traumatic childbirth at age 13 so damaged her body that it left her unable to have more children -- at least that is what is assumed, as her son was her only offspring, although she married twice more after the death of his father), she intervened on the matter of her namesake granddaughter, Princess Margaret Tudor, when she was betrothed at some disgracefully young age. She made sure that Margaret was not sent off to live as a husband's wife until she was fully physically mature.

Some years ago my husband and I used to do an educational Tudor week for primary schools at Castle Rushen based around 'King' Thomas Stanley's visit to the Isle of Man in 1507. The children took part in several of Tudor activities - dance and music, cooking, learning a traditionary ballad, games, writing on velum in the scriptorium with a quill pen. At the end they would collect in the presence chamber and "King Thomas" would enter to a fanfare and the children would serve his Majesty the prepared food and wine after they had recited the ballad and entertained the King with dancing.

You know, it makes me very sad, too. Vicious. Just inhumane. But if we're being honest? Margaret was intent on her son becoming king, and then his son. SHe thought a Tudor should, without doubt, be on the throne. While she was an ardent Catholic, I think she *may* have supported Henry keeping absolute power no matter the cost. SPeaking of which, he had the Lady Salisbury (old for those timems) executed too. The last Plantagenet, and incidentally Katherine of Aragon's close friend.

I thought Margaret Beaufort was Looney as well as a religious fanatic even though many people were super religious back then. I'm not certain she ever killed anyone as portrayed in the white princess, but I do know that she was definitely courageous to do some of the things she did behind people's back and managed to not get caught. After Richard the third usurped the throne front Edward the Fourth and his own brother and nephew, Margaret getting close with Elizabeth Woodville to gain Alliance for her son Henry to Mary Elizabeth oldest daughter Elizabeth of York providing Henry the 7th defeated Richard on the battlefield. That was pretty clever!

I never knew anything about Henry's grandmother. What a fascinating woman! I will have to do research on her to learn more. Thanks so much. I just bought a book from the local library's shop. It's a hard cover edition of New Worlds, Lost Worlds by Susan Brigden. What's your opinion of this book & author? Hopefully, I can start reading it this weekend. Thanks again! 👍❤👑🏰🎪🎭

PBS has a series on King Henry viii which mentions Margaret beaufort's being in court with both sides of the Roses. I believe she learned a lot from Lord Stanley by playing both sides. Just like the man who killed Richard the iii Rhys ap Thomas did. Very smart! I'm not vilifying her just thought I'd throw this little tidbit out there.

Wonder what she would of thought of her grandsons actions towards Catholic faith in order to get a divorce.. She should be remembered for her work towards education. It's a shame how she portrayed in fiction.

Claire is right about the recent portrayals of Margaret being less than flattering. No less than 3 recent shows (The White Queen, The White Princess, and The Spanish Princess) have laid the guilt for the murder of the princes in the tower at her feet, with no concrete proof to back it up. Is that just a coincidence? What is it about her that rubs some people the wrong way, leading them to believe she was capable of murdering two innocent children? I have asked myself this question, and looked back at the details of her life that we are certain about, and I only came up with one thing. Towards the end of her life, Margaret became very generous, especially towards the church. She founded and paid for several religious schools and institutions. Was she simply a generous person, or did she do these things to atone for some terrible sins she commited? Killing the young princes would have been the worst sin of all. It certainly would have made any religious person scared that it would lead to hell. As she approached death, these acts of generosity may have helped her believe she might be forgiven. Again this is all circumstantial, but it is all I could find that gives any support to the idea that she killed the princes.

Phillipa Gregory for some reason, puts Margaret Beaufort and Elizabeth I in a bad light. I have no idea why, but maybe she's explained herself somewhere.

And HOW she deserves this tribute!! I often think about this pivotal giant of history - she is such an incredibly consequential being. She ORIGINAL strong, badass "if you mess with my kid I'll kill you" single mom lol, an inspiration to the rest of us even now! 😁💖 For this, she lost her innocence, her childhood and (I tend to agree with those that say) her ability to have any more children after giving birth at 13 💔 She deserves to be remembered exactly as you say, and more!

It seems that in film, many historical people are treated in a one dimensional manner, but that does them a great disservice. We are different things to different people and that applies to everyone!!!

I've just looked it up and Badminton House became the seat of the Somerset family, the Dukes of Beaufort, in the 17th century. Now Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester, was an illegitimate son of Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset, and Henry was a brother of Margaret Beaufort, so there is a link.

My favorite Margaret from back in that era was Margaret Pole who was executed when she was very old by Henry the 8th. Margaret pole was a York and her own brother had been executed under Henry the 7th. Bless her heart because she had a hard life and then only to have her head chopped off for no reason when she was elderly. There was a plantagenet flag in her Cedar Chest and Henry the 8th thought she and her sons were planning an uprising. So so sad what Henry the eighth's good to her and her son and grandson. Thank God Reggie pole survived only because he was a cardinal and was able to stay away from Henry's lynchmen.

As a beneficiary of the disappearance of the princes in the tower, she will always be maligned in fiction it seems. Unfortunately for her legacy that mystery is as yet unsolved. Her patronages are not as often mentioned.

I've never considered her involved in the disappearance of the princes in the Tower, but I never read any of Phillipa Gregory's books. Almost everything I've read about her was in nonfiction biographies and histories. I've always put the blame squarely on the crooked shoulders of Richard III!

She sounds like a woman who used her brain and became stronger, because of her adversity. I cant imagine what the girl being impregnated and bearing the baby went through. What a nightmare. She should be remembered as a woman who survived very difficult times and died at the top of her game...so to speak.
