Foster is a true gem. So glad to see you read it. I read it first a few months back and just read Small Things Like These in June. There's just something about Irish writers. They do the 'feels' better than anybody else. You're so spot on when you talk about Keegan's economy of prose. Another great vlog, Nathan.
@nathansnook
@nathansnook Ай бұрын
honestly they do!!! they’re so gentle with feelings, and how they carry them out in fiction, and i hope to read more! what did you think of Small Things Like These ?

@@nathansnook I didn't like it as much as Foster, but it is still worth the read. The subject matter is rather depressing. About the scandal of how the Irish Catholic church abused women and how a man discovers the abuse one day on his own.

Here for the Miffy tshirt. I need you to tell me the way IN to Didion, what’s the perfect start to her work. Sooo excited for Toward Eternity and for hosting Anton in London next month. Eek. Sounds like I need to read Medusa of the Roses. Thrilled you loved the Strout, she’s one of my favs.

It makes me so happy that you loved Foster! I've read it back when it was originally published and I was raving about it to everyone since then. It is maybe the book I gifted to people the most. It's just perfection. Great that Keegan finally gets the attention she deserves in the last couple of years.

Play It As It Lies was the second thing I read by Joan Didion (the first was her essay on keeping a journal, which omg is so good!) and it ripped my heart out but I really loved it. I read it on the Libby app and thought it was so good i went to Barnes and Noble and bought a copy. It is well worn and well annotated (also the first book i ever thought to annotate so that's cool too!)
@nathansnook
@nathansnook Ай бұрын
@@KetchupCanvas i think that’s the move tbh! loving a book you borrowed from the library so much that you went out to own a copy of it! physical media in this regard is so important! On Keeping a Journal is an essay i revisit from time to time! that and On Self-Respect !

I really also enjoyed the new Elisa Gabbert. What a treat to just open it up, read an essay. I keep forgetting to talk about. The new Maggie Nelson was a little too all over the place for me. My brain wasn’t in the mood just then.
@nathansnook
@nathansnook Ай бұрын
i felt the Nelson was definitely scattered, felt like something she wrote in between years and other books so it doesn’t have that highly curated and concise feel to them in comparison to her other essay collections! and i get it! if the brain isn’t ready for Nelson, breaks are necessary 😭

@nathansnook

talk to no one. don't leave the house. go home early. don't overstay welcomes. pick up the book, not the phone. wake up and read. go to bed and read. highlight. take notes. let the thoughts course, let them bleed into the pages so you're there too. get to the end. read at all times of wait. waiting for buses, waiting for trains. waiting for food, waiting for friends. *but also this is coming from someone who sleeps so little because i'm so fearful of all the things i can't get done because there are so few hours in the day and i eat books like i eat food, for nourishment, joy, and literal survival :S
