Jung Chang was born in Sichuan Province, China, in 1952. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) she worked as a peasant, a ‘barefoot’ doctor, a steelworker, and an electrician before becoming an English-language student at Sichuan University. She left China for Britain in 1978 and obtained a PhD in Linguistics in 1982 at the University of York - the first person from Communist China to receive a doctorate from a British university. Jung Chang is the author of the best-selling books Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China (which the Asian Wall Street Journal called the most read book about China), and Mao: The Unknown Story (with Jon Halliday). Her books have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more than 15 million copies, in addition to millions in pirated editions and computer downloads in mainland China where both books are banned. Jung Chang has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Buckingham, York and Warwick, the Open University, UK, and Bowdoin College, USA.
Her latest book Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister is a gripping story of love, war, intrigue, bravery, glamour and betrayal, which takes us on a sweeping journey from Canton to Hawaii to New York, from exiles' quarters in Japan and Berlin to secret meeting rooms in Moscow, and from the compounds of the Communist elite in Beijing to the corridors of power in democratic Taiwan.
5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each.

Fascinating to hear Jung Chang's research on the Soong sisters and to discover the role of Moscow in directing events in the Civil War. Loved hearing her thoughts on Hong Kong and China under Xi Jin Ping, and I share her hope that democracy can return to China. Thank you for sharing this after the webinar.

Fantastic eye-opener on Sun; on closer analysis of historical records, he definitely didn't do anything other than talk. This book totally destroyed my previous perception of him. Having lived in Taiwan for the past 10 years, it's unlikely there'll be any legacies or museums dedicated to the Soongs here. Many Taiwanese have no love lost for Mei-Ling and even CKS is now being painted negatively as a tyrant; the Chiang family bears the burden of the 228 Incident and the White Terror period. In general, the Soong Sisters and the Chiangs are not looked upon favourably, especially by the younger generations, many of whom may have gotten biased information from propagandish history taught in schools. The only probable legacy of Mei-Ling is perhaps the extreme adoration for America. Like Charlie, going to, sending their kids to or being an American seem to be every Taiwanese's dream and goal. Had it not been for Mei-Ling, Taiwan would probably not have such strong American influence on her politics. Also, democracy in Taiwan is merely a facade unfortunately. In the past 4 years, it has become more dictorial. Economically, it's no way as strong as during Ching-Kuo's era. Realistically, true democracy is non-existent in any of the Chinese-speaking world.

Yup, Tsai has turned Taiwan into her own version of an authoritarian nation under the guise of democracy and the KMT party has been compromised and stopped fighting back long ago.
