"Juninho has been described as one of the world's most feared strikers of a static ball. As of 17 May 2009, Juninho has scored 44 goals from direct free kicks for Olympique Lyonnais, his last for the club being a strike from long distance against Olympique de Marseille. With his free kick in Champions League against FC Barcelona, he rewrote Olympique Lyonnais' record books as their highest ever European goal scorer with 17 goals. The method he uses for long-range free kicks is frequently "knuckle balling", where the ball has almost no spinning motion during flight. A successful knuckle ball will "move" or "wobble" in the air unpredictably, making it difficult for the goalkeeper to save. He first made his name as a free kick taker in Europe with a long range free kick against Bayern Munich in the 2003-04 Champions League group stage in which the ball dipped viciously at the end of travel that deceived Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn, who was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the time." - Wikipedia about Juninho

I'm a guy from Lyon, i've grown as a OL fan, when i was young, i used to go to the stadium with my father, every time a free kick took place, it was 1 chance out of 2 to get a goal. Everybody was expecting a goal from him, every time. The presure was huge, and he put it in the cage. Amazing.

This guy was smart. GK just wasn’t able to see the distance and trajectory of the ball. It is impossible to calculate, where to jump. You don’t feel the speed, the spin, the direction, the twist in the trajectory. Impossible.

As a former amateur goalkeeper, the first change of trajectory of his shots is the real killer. At that speed, the first step you take it’s crucial. It was not only about raw power and precision, but an insane control of the whole trajectory what made his free kicks unique. Only Pirlo was comparable.

He's a master. Pay attention at 3:35 and again at 4:27, the ball has almost no spin. That makes it unpredictable for goalkeepers, the ball doesn't bend just one way as ir normally does, it kinda floats, goes one way then it switches direction midair. It's like a knuckleball in baseball.

Sinisa Mihajlovic scored 67 FK goals.. only 7 less but played 200 less games than Juninho did Juninho scored ONCE in 3 games past Khan but 95% were unknown keepers from easy leagues in Qatar desert, USA, Brazil and France. Keepers in Italy were far more superior. Mihajlovic had to beat a Buffon, Dida, Pagliuca, Toldo, VanDaSar, Peruzzi EVERY week in league. Juninho scored 11 FK goals from 95 attempts in ChampLeague.. Mihajlovic scored 5 from 21 attempts National team Juninho scored 3 FK goals in 40 games.. Mihajlovic scored 10 FK goals in 63 games. Juninho scored 2 FK goals in a game 3 times... Mihajlovic scored twice in 6 games and even a hat trick of FK's. Juninho is arguably one of the best with his total tally scored but the stats don't lie..

He's not just good with curling shoot, but knuckle ball also. Roberto Carlos is good, but he mostly rely on shoot power. I think Juninho is better as a free kick taker, but Roberto is a better as a whole player.

When Juninho was playing for Lyon, during Champions League matches with top teams, the Lyon players will always aim to fall to get freekicks and opponents just don't want to foul any of their players. Any freekicks for them is almost a sure goal like a penalty kick.

The thing is (and it makes me an even bigger fan of Juninho), he knew about it and came to the soccer field before the game, with some balls to practice freekick in the high athmosphere, this gave Brazil its only goal in the match. His God-like standart makes it seem effortless, but he fought hard to reach this conversion rate. Truly a soccer hero!

Perfection, he can put some curve in close range, and purely powerful freekicks from far out. You can see how the ball is stable and not spinning in the air, incredible contact with the ball

Juninho signed a contract a week ago at Olympique Lyonnais to be the sporting director, and chose Sylvinho (ex arsenal / barcelona player) to be the coach. Can't remember which season, Juni was involve in about 50% of all lyon goals and it was all about FK . This guy was a terror and the reason this team won 7 league titles in a row.

Just so you are aware, the fact that the ball dips to the left last second is complete luck. Knuckle balls are extremely affected by air flows, which is what makes them very difficult to stop. But the exact direction the ball goes is just random.

Тимур Халиков it’s not random. Where your foot impacts and every parameter including but not limited to Position of ball struck, roll angle on ankle and yaw angle on ankle, speed when running at ball etc all impact the displacement of the internals in ball.

What a pity they didn't have a good striker.CAREW FRED, ELBER5(after BAYERN);good players but not top players you need to win champion's league. It was an incredible period where it was stunning to watch the matches of this team.High level for sure.

The sticker they needed at this time wasn't ready for the champions league and of course I think about Benzema. Benzema came too late to lead Lyon to the champions league final unfortunately

2:34 I'm happy to say I watched juninho score a free kick live. It was in a world cup qualifier. Brasil vs Bolivia. The stadium was five blocks away from home. He was the main reason I went to that match. I think I was the only Bolivian to cheer for that goal; I was just too happy to see the best free kick taker in the world (and maybe in history) score a free kick. It was quite a experience.

As a defender you don’t defend the last 20m the same way as when you would 35m from your goal as you don’t want to give away dangerous freekick. So when your opponent has a player like Juninho who can score from 30/35 meters it’s a game changer.

Absolutely deadly free kicker ever I have seen, not able to understand his free kick , extremely speechless. Juninho is no 1 deadly free kicker, it's very hard to predict in which direction ball is coming, such a marvelous free kick Juninho is. Miss him badly.

It pitied the goalkeepers. Certain balls, they simply could be flying until today that simply would not reach. Others, despite seeing the ball's trajectory, this round, the whimsically round archers suddenly changed direction when they did not fall abruptly in ways to make them totally inoperative - in Portuguese, we would say totally sold out - only having to go to the bottom of the Goal to get the ball. Real Madrid's Roberto Carlos kicked a lot, but if the ball was still, he did not even shade Juninho Pernambucano.
