Not everyone is like that. With me, i want to see initiative. I want to see someone do research first. Try to figure a problem on their own. When that doesn’t work, then come and ask and show what steps were taken. Always asking shows me you will never move forward and advance.

I’m in this boat right now. I’m in my senior year of a CS program at my college. I know a good amount about front end development, love java, know python a bit, know c++ a bit. Have learned a little of everything but idk what to do, so I feel like I need to learn everything and anything lol. My biggest issue is leetcode. It’s just completely eating at me and making me feel dumb. I genuinely can’t solve some unless I look at solutions and that’s just demotivating. It was a breath of fresh air to watch this.

Here from Brazil, many companies place titles in junior developer positions, but wanting us to have knowledge of a senior, the worst thing is the interviews when we say we are junior and many have little or no experience yet, they totally ignore us , because they want to hire a Java Developer/senior Developer to fill this position that is said to be junior level most of the time. My issue is, and most of my nervousness is coming from the fact that I understand data structures, conceptually. As well as algorithms. I understand why we would pick an array over SLL, etc etc. My problem is getting an algorithm problem and than trying to code it. I know what i need to do, I can pseduocode it no problem, but remembering slicing, or remembering the syntax to grab the diagonal of a matrix, this is where my issue lies. I can't translate my thought into code. Maybe I need more practice but it scares me staring at the coding problem screen during an interview.

I hate the fact that you need to remember the implementation for thesw alogorithms. In real life its enough to understand them conceptually and when to implement them. Then its just one google search (or even better, one prompt in chatgpt) away from figuring out the syntax.

Yes, you DO need to know everything. You need to be at a Mid to Senior Level with experience ( that is 4+ years experience ) with a solid understanding of OO programming. You ARE expected to be able to write code from start to finish. From backend to front. You HAVE to think javascript is just child's play. That's the impression I get now after searching for the appropriate Junior position that I should qualify for. Am I wrong? Take a look at all the job postings for junior level, they ask for 2 to 4+ years of experience with a 'solid understanding' in whatever language. When it comes to technologies, they want you to be 'proficient' in exactly all the ones they use. Think about it. A good analogy would be me giving my Ferrari keys to a 13-year old that hasn't learned to drive but understands already the basics of brake to stop and pedal to go and wheel to steer AND expect them to drive perfectly or well enough not to crash. I imagine that it takes time for a company to win the lottery with a junior who has expert skills. In reality, I'm inclined to say that it's most likely Mid to senior-level programmers that settle for Junior positions just to secure a job and that is probably a reason why us real newcomers are expected to be superman or wonder woman or walking digital tech demigods. With that being said, I disagree @ Nelson's arguments except for the passion to learn and asking questions. Nelson can you honestly tell us what your company is honestly expecting from a candidate? In truth, what is the basic job requirement for the Junior level?

Well, in tech industry, apparently, the answer to lots of questions starts with “it depends”. In this case, it depends on the context of each company. Some require junior to “know everything” listed on the job description. Some just don’t. From my experience, applying for dev jobs is like a lottery game. Companies don’t really know candidates’ true potential (multiple rounds of interview are not even enough). Same as candidates that don’t even know if skills listed on job description will be on the real job. Even if you are really good, it doesn’t guarantee that you will get accepted. All in all, don’t take these time consuming processes too seriously. Just keep on trying, figuring out if the job is a good fit for you.

From what I’ve been told COVID, WFH, and people moving into programming fields have all caused this to be more prevalent. New grads going without jobs as people weren’t hiring at beginning of pandemic. Also it may vary from team to team/company to company, some people aren’t expecting a junior for said role but have to post as junior for budget or whatever, and given the circumstances people overqualified for a traditional junior role are taking these roles.

I did coding to just understand coding in general. Then now to see how much of certain languages I can learn. I tried Data Analysis with Python, I'm doing the Java Developer course on www.codegym.cc and I'm trying Microsoft's C# tutorial. I'm also trying to see how much of an R programming for machine learning course I can do. I've also done HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP in relation to web development. Other languages I tried were SQL, C++, C

some companies feel liek you do need to know everything. back when I thought I needed a job, with 1 year experience I got rejected by seniors cause I didn't know complex SQL statements (cause I had never used SQL lmao) or because I didn't know architecture. (CAUSE I WAS A FKING JUNIOR DEVELOPER, NOT AN ARCHITECT)

I don't totally agree with the point of asking a lot of questions. I'd say that, even if you're no longer a junior, when you don't know something you first investigate, and give yourself some time to figure it out. If you can't find the answer then you ask. That's just my opinion, as I believe that finding an answer yourself makes you more prone to remember it in the future. On the other hand, if you are given answers for everything you end up forgetting most of them

Learn programming concepts first - I made the mistake of caring too much about learning syntax in Python without understanding much of the concepts. Concepts can be transferred around all languages but not syntax, plus syntax is just something you can search on Google in an instant and immediately apply
