Some big changes may be coming to a menu near you. A decision by the state attorney general means there can be no surcharges added to your restaurant tab - everything must be included in the price you see on that menu. As Terry McSweeney reports, it’s leaving a bad taste in the mouth of some restaurant owners.

Sometimes when people have too much money they spend money on frivolous and superfluous things and tend to disregard such things. That's a habit that I've both seen, heard, and experienced with people that come upon higher-ends of wealthiness is that they tend to not care, and as a result they assume everyone else is the same in regards to disregarding pricing, etc. It's the unfortunate truth, glad to see that they're working on enforcing full disclosure of pricing in-advance, always frustrates me personally.

The reason why some restaurant owners are opposing the new law is because many of them, not all, but many, use the upcharge fee money as their personal cash machine. They take the money as an upcharge for "mandated health care" and then use it for whatever they like. Unfortunately, this money doesn't always end up in the employee's pocket or go to the group health plan.

Those owners are talking as if charging hidden fees would bring out more customers. Nah.. people avoid dining out because of those hidden fees. Many say "never again", "fooled once is enough" and avoid restaurants and hotels that charge hidden fees. The best is to enact laws to require the inclusion of service charges in the price, like many European countries do.

Restaurateurs that charge hidden fees are deceiving their customers into thinking that their establishment is the same price as other restaurants that don't charge hidden fees. Shame on them. If they can't survive without deceiving diners then they should go out of business and let another restaurants takeover their space that will charge up front pricing.

Hidden fees should never be allowed. At least mark in on the menu. Like when they say additional gratuity added for larger groups. I get that but put it in the menu

Sticker shock is way better than a bill shock. At least you know upfront and don’t feel cheated. The lady there is admitting to wanting to trick and bait customers with a lower menu price. Not sure if she understands her customers will leave with a bitter aftertaste.

I bet Laurie Thomas would be outraged if a gas station added a "service fee" after she filled her tank. /s

"Adding hidden fees to price of menu can cause sticker shock". You get sticker shock either way. Sticker shock before ordering or sticker shock after. Of course theses places want sticker shock after because by then, it's too late and customer must pay.

Restaurants only going to fool people once. After the first time with the fees, they’re going to know and decide accordingly

The funny thing is most of these restaurant crooks’ junk fees are taxed.

It is the state and city that introduced all those extra fees and charges. I consider them a tip and lower my tip accordingly. Start voting people if you want more money in your pocket. I certainly vote with my $. SF is in such a decline anyway that I barely do that anyway compared to years before. And now with minimal wage increase in CA to $20 expect both layoffs and price increases. Not just in junk food places. Someone making $30 an hour somewhere else will want a raise too as they compare - failing businesses, making one employee work twice as much, price inflation to pass it on consumer, moving out of state. Pretty obvious where this is going to lead...

so every time the government adds a fee or increases an existing one does the restaurant need to adjust their overall menu pricing? seems like a waste of menus. Are they taxing us on the surcharge amounts if the surcharge is added into the total price of the item? are we taxed anyway? so confusing... no fees or surcharges at home and i can eat in my underwear while watching Star Trek.

Dining out has completely lost all the appeal i grew up with. there will always be eat-out options, but the days of the expensive brick n morter restaurant are numbered. Waaaaaay too many less mussy fussy options, especially enjoying cooking and eating your own food at home.
