90% Constitutional silver, or "Junk Silver" coins are priced differently than most bullion products. While rounds, coins, and bars typically are priced by their weight, either in troy ounces, grams, or kilograms, Junk Silver coins are priced by their "face value".
In this video I will do my best to explain what this term means, how much silver these coins actually contain, and how to avoid paying too much for 90% silver half dollars, quarters, and dimes.

I used to be very bothered that 90% coinage was priced with a multiplier times FV. I figured out that my worry was not the pricing, but the fact that I couldn't make a clear comparison between that and all other Ag which is priced by the troy ounce. Throw in the 90% is often circulated and worn in some degree, you don't even get the BU condition of 1ozt Ag coins or rounds. Erg! Too many variables! I discovered that I can take the multiplier (as 23x FV, then this is the 23) and multiply that by 1.4, and this would give me the price per troy ounce. Good! Down to one variable, the matter of condition. So if I want $1 of FV at 23x, I can see that I'm paying $32 per ounce (even though 90% $1 does not have a full ounce, but the 23 is the fraction of an ounce that corresponds to the 32 for a whole ounce. That's why it works. Now then, after all that, if BU silver coin is $30, I'm getting more for my money by getting the BU silver coin instead of the 90%. and then it's just what's your own goals for the usage to decide whether you buy the 90% at higher cost per ozt.

I’ll generally buy it at $20xface or under, lots of people are fomoing into it super hard rn. Some LCS employee cointuber claimed someone purchased $1,000,000 face all at once from the wholesalers (which is why premiums exploded) but I have no way to confirm this, could just be a response to the high demand

I'm 73 y/o. When silver hit $45 per ounce in late 1979 and early Jan. of 1980, you couldn't find any 90% silver to buy. Everyone thought silver was going to $100 and wouldn't sell at any price. Two years earlier it was less than 6 bucks an ounce. Two years later in 1982, it was less than $8 dollars per.

Using .715 silver on pre-1964 dimes, quarters and half dollars you would want to know by the ounce. 1.4 x .715 = 1.001 ounce. Work off $1 worth face value. Examples: Ten dimes at $2.20 cents each = $22. 1.4 x $22 = $30.80. Use spot at $23.50. $30.80 - $23.50 = $7.30 premium. Four quarters at $5.50 each = $22. Two half dollars at $11.00 each = $22. You can pay less premium buying other silver. But, bartering may be easier with constitutional silver.

In Australia I stack pre-decimal which is equivalent to US constitutional - pre 1946 is 92.5% Silver and post 1946 is 50% Silver the exception being the 1966 round 50 cent piece that is 80% Silver, the round 50 cent piece also being the only round 50 cent piece minted, 3 x 1966 50 cent pieces = 1 oz of pure Silver and sell for aprox $14 each ($42 for an ounce) this is approximately $6 over SPOT at today Silver price

Great Video. It would be nice to know how dealers come up with their face value multiples when they are selling the junk silver. How do they decide if they are charging 18 X face or 26 X face? What are they basing that on? Thank you.
@SmartSilverStacker
@SmartSilverStacker Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine they just base it on supply and demand. If they keep selling out, raise the price. If inventory isn't moving, reduce the price. Of course it's tied to movement in the spot price, but supply and demand is ultimately the factor that drives fluctuations in premiums.

Where can you get $1 face of junk for $17 four days ago? Lol- Everywhere I look junk runs from the upper $20s going into $40. Even the big metal sources are charging fairly high premiums. Silver was around $24 when this vid was released and idk anywhere selling junk at less than spot, but maybe I'm missing something. Only been in this since January, and when I started asking around what to do to get the most silver for my $- i was told time and time again that junk was sold less than spot. Still am yet to actually see that for sale anywhere online and def not in shops by me lol. In fact by my math with the fact that you don't even get 3/4ths of an OZ per $1 face included, shows junk to have higher premiums than some top world bullion coinage, depending on where you buy it. Im finding ebay with free shipping to be the lowest price to spot lately. So it Seems like 'premium' culture has hit constitutional silver, or maybe it was there all along if its always been sold by $fv

I just bought 36 Morgans and Peace silver dollars for $20 each from a private collector. This is about what LCS is paying for them. Took mine to a local coin show and sold 7 of the better ones for $595 to collectors. I learned about toning and condition. I'd love to get some more.

Let me encourage you to no longer call Constitutional Silver 'Junk': Systematically using the term 'Constitutional' will remind everyone that silver still legally is money, while the currency of today (nickel etc.) is not. Also, 'Junk' is a bit of a derogative that I would NEVER use about anything that is Constitutional, or coined silver. Of course, others might still use the term 'Junk', that's worth a mention, in passing :)
@SmartSilverStacker
@SmartSilverStacker Жыл бұрын
I know some stackers don't like the term. I don't really care what we call it, at the end of the day it's real money regardless of the label. 3 reasons I say "junk" more often than "consitutional": 1- fewer syllables 2 - it is the more commonly used and recognizable term 3 - the local coin shops I started shopping with as a new stacker called it "junk" so that's what I call it out of habit

I’m not seeing extremely high premiums in generics and some coins, so there is not a “silver shortage”. However, I think a lot of people go after junk and Eagles, because they don’t know any better. I used to be one of them. No longer. More ounces wins in the end. Junk and Eagles are NOT rare.
@SmartSilverStacker
@SmartSilverStacker Жыл бұрын
The sky high premiums and lack of availability is an indication that they are in fact rare. Didn't say there was a silver shortage, but there is a shortage of "junk silver", and it's not going away any time soon, because the supply will only continue to shrink.

I dont get it. I looked at halves and quarters junk. The silver content is based on new coins. Many I have seen have a lot of ware on them and really contain much less actual silver than what they did when new. So you aren't getting what you are paying for unless you can find some with very little ware its better to buy rounds or coins that actually weigh 1oz.
