"Junk" silver, sometimes called "90%" or "Constitutional", is just one of your options when it comes to owning silver. But 90% silver offers some unique advantages that can easily be overlooked.
We'll explain exactly what "90%" silver is, then we'll compare and contrast 90% silver with .999 silver bars and modern .999 silver coins as we take a deeper dive into these coins from America's past and discover an option that might just check off some boxes for you!

A fascinating exposition of the positive attributes of 90% Silver. I will be watching/listening to this video again in the future, and I'll do a deeper personal dive into the cumulative case that you're offering. Incidentally, 90% Silver makes up fully 50% of my overall core Silver stack. I consider 90% to be the foundation of my Silver stack, though I do stack .999 Sovereign Silver weighted toward ASEs because I'm an American citizen. I also stack .999 generic Silver rounds and generic 1 ounce Silver bars. I tend to stay away from larger increments of Silver, mostly due to the reasons that I stack Silver. I'm looking to preserve the largest universe of possible buyers, and there is very little that can be accomplished by a 10 ounce Silver bar or larger that a collection of 1 ounce coins, rounds, or bars can't also accomplish just as well. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to make such a long and detailed video taking us through your ideas in this area. Definitely a video worth going over more than once, and you don't find that very often.

Another attraction for ME is that I'm old enough to recall when all the dimes, quarters, half dollars, and occasionally dollars, that were in my pocket and cash registers everywhere were these 90% silver coins. I was in high school when the clad coins began showing up, so I started putting the old quarters away, thinking they might be collectible some day. Of course, I was right, but I ended up spending them in high school and college.

Paper boy here who also collected some silver coins from circulation in early 1960’s. Kept my small collection. Bought some bags of 90% in 1983, fearing 1/2 Trillion in Federal debit. Started steady stacking in 2020. Wow, now Fed debt close to 35 Trillion. I am amazed at how they have kept this ship afloat. I got lots of silver lifesaver vests. It’s gonna be a wild ride.

I know exactly who you are talking about. The guy that was badmouthing the community for stacking a certain silver. The really ironic thing was he was claiming some people had a low IQ, and he was misusing words and misspelling words left and right. He claimed that the "hard" math was too difficult when in reality it was first grade math. I won't be clicking on any more of his videos. I don't want my IQ to sink from watching. Lol. If I were to make content on KZfaq it would be about stacking. The only problem is there are so many of you guys that do it so well, that I fear that the mediocre content I could offer would absolutely get lost in the shuffle. I'll stick to being a consumer and let you guys that know what you're doing keep doing it.

A very informative video Dub-C. You are lucky to have kept 90% silver in America until 1964. Here in England we lost 925 silver coinage in 1919 to 50% and then all silver content in 1947. My hobby is metal detecting and you would not believe the amount of coins I find lost in agricultural fields. This way I collect precious metals with numismatic value for free. My oldest silver coin is a denarius of the Emperor Hadrian from 117-138AD. Thanks for the video.

Thanks! This was just a little of my stack but some of the best. I think you're right about .999 silver: the 1980s was when it really took off. But there was an earlier rush to .999 silver in the early 1970s with the silver "Art Bar" craze that lasted until just before the bicentennial in 1976. If you're interested, I touch on some of these topics in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptJ8qrKXnJezlZs.html

First, I’m a big fan of 90% silver coins and they make up the largest single part of my stack. One word of caution though. Be aware of circulation wear. The industry wide assumption is that it approximates a reduction to 0.715 actual silver weight per one dollar face value. That may be true for most coins minted in the 1960’s but older coins generally have more wear. The only way you can tell what you are actually paying relative to spot is to weigh the coins and calculate. I’ve seen heavily worn coin as low as 0.620 which is over 12% below what you expect to get using the industry standard estimate.
@Dub-C_Coins
@Dub-C_Coins Ай бұрын
This is excellent advice. If you're stacking 90%, be careful with "slicks"--coins that have worn smooth over time. These are generally barber coinage but even mercury dimes suffer from excessive wear. It's easy enough to check rolls at your shop. Another reason to look for AU or even BU rolls of coins. If you're uncertain, stick with late-1950s to early 1960s coinage. Thanks, @barrymaness5814!

Why do they call constitutional silver? is because of the Constitution says everything has to be done by gold and silver. The only reason that I collect silver and gold, because the currency is being overprinted. government could control trade values so if we did go back to gold and silver standard the government already printed would it be worth on the coin. The only reason why they use gold and silver yes it's in the Constitution but they printed a low value on the coin like $1 silver citizens= $30.00 government scrap $2.50 gold citizens = $500 government scrap it's for the citizens can do trade, the government can get 10 times higher price for scrap. Is it supposed to help with inflation and why the government says do not destroy government property and if you do you go to prison.
