Be sure to save the drum brake parts (backing plates) from the 7.25 rear. You can re-use them to upgrade an A-Body 8-3/4 to large bolt with new axles of course.

Dylan, I'm very pleased that with the Duster. You are doing the work to it that makes sense to do. Upgrading the brakes, some inexpensive cosmetic and headliner work is the way to enjoy such a clean foundation of an old car. You'll have a decent, reliable piece of automotive history to come. Keep it up and we'll see you soon.

Had a Butterscotch colored 71 Demon. Some of my favorite cars those A body Mopars. Unfortunately on the Gulf Coast rust was a huge problem no matter what “rust proof” measures were taken. That slant 6 and 727 torqueflite were just incredible. Still have my 67 Belvedere. It’s a 273 and strong as ever. Sad to see the donor Duster here was so far gone, but glad you’re making excellent use of her. Nice work

Good luck with the resto. I bought a 73 Duster 340 for $1,400 from the original owner...but that was back in 1980 and still have it.

Owned the ‘73 Duster (Twister edition in Blue, with 318). Gone in 1980, when oil sump broke. Mechanic bought for body (racing) and 318 was headed for a 340 rebuild.

I had a 1973 1/2 bought in April of 74 Plymouth Duster twister with the 318 NEW..They were having a really hard time selling cars that year. And they offered a $300.00 Chrysler rebate on the Duster at the time. The sticker was 3,300 and with the rebate and 100.00 extra bucks off I drove away for 2900. Mel Wolf Chrysler on Western in Chicago. I did a suspension upgrade on it added a leaf spring. And was running E 70's on it at the time. You going to see that there is a off set of two inches in width between the front and rear..With the front actually being wider that the rear. So you could run G70's rear and E 70's (Biggest tire at the time you could put in the front of the Duster) and then it would really handled great. Plus it gave a super straight look to the car.. The G;s Rear to E;s front then matching width..

Very unusual Duster , usually after 73 , most A- bodies , if they had a /6 then they had drum brakes and if it was a V-8 then it had disc brakes. Also if anyone else needs some 14 X 5.5 big bolt ralley wheels , contact Dylan and he can let me know to bring some to the Nashville Mopar show the wheels will be cheap.....

My first car ('72 Duster) was somewhere between the two in condition... Might want to save the hood hinges; from what I've read, mine weren't only ones that bowed outward, scraping up the fender, leading to even more rust... The paint looks pretty god on yours. I'd suggest going over it with Meguiar's M7 "Show Car Glaze," then maybe "Ultimate Compound," and it might be ready for some good wax. Single-stage paint has a lot of life in it; just gotta keep after it. Just the trim parts alone from the parts car are probably worth more than what you paid, considering a lot isn't even going to show up in the aftermarket... Matching lock set - if you have the keys... They don't need to be mint for a "driver;" they just need to be THERE. Would like to see what ImpactJunky below could do with the parts car. Could be an interesting challenge.

Dylan, you can apply fiberglass resin directly on to a clean fiber headliner panel to repair and stiffen it up. I did one of mine last weekend. My Mopar are eighties and nineties. The headliners are made from the same stuff, looks like.

get the high quality thin superglue, and some baking soda. You can fix a lot of things with it. Baking soda is not only a filler, it reacts with the glue to cause it to dry almost instantly, and dry very strong and very hard. Once you've done that you can sand, shape and paint the glue/soda mix. If you'r a bit clever with making molds, you could have made a replacement for that broken part in the grill and not had to buy the rust bucket.

My first car was a new 1970 red Plymouth Duster with a 340 in it. Car payment was $108.36 for 2 years and the insurance for it was $78 a month. I was 16. Next car was a 1972 Plymouth Duster with a 225 slant 6 in it Insurance payments went down to $24 a month. I traded it for a new 1976 Chrysler Cordoba with a POS 340 lean burn that burned out at 42K miles.

You should swap the rear as well so you have the same bolt pattern all around. It shouldn't take long. I have done similar cars in two to three hours, plus you when you put your old rear in the parts car you just have to install enough to move it around.

Back in 1989, I nearly bought a 74 duster...near Ukiah, CA....for $200. Its entire driver's side was crushed in, & I didn't want to chance the possibility of frame damage...it was a slant six car....too far gone for my level of skill fixing cars...that'd be about nothing....for what it's worth, I have always found the 70 Duster an incredibly sharp looking car...something about being a kid & seeing those slitted taillights on a Gold Duster in front of us...man, I never stood a chance!

( i was at my folks an pop didnt want all that stuff around) - so ended up selling it.

That's one ropey Duster but at least it gets to live on as parts to keep other cars rolling. It doesn't look like it's been changed much from original (to my eye, I'm by no means an expert) which would suggest it didn't have many owners before it ended up in the junk yard. That type of body "repair" was not at all uncommon in the '70s and well into the '80s, I've seen that kind of thing quite a few times, a friend of mine even had the rear wing/fender/quarter panel fall off one of his cars on the motorway because the filler/bondo had all dried out and lost it sticking power. Those foam over board head linings are a total disaster once they get a few years old, there are plenty of old cars around that had the vinyl head lining hung on bows and the head linings are still fit to be reused even in a restored car but the foam and board ones (which just about everything has these days) are just junk before they get to twenty years old. The foam just doesn't stand up to the temperature changes and moisture inside the vehicle and it breaks down and then the cloth drops down, and it happens to them all eventually. But we're stuck with them because it makes the vehicles cheaper, easier and quicker to build...

You are spot on with all of that. And yes according to the title it was owned by the same person since 1980. It definitely had a rough life, but hey that means I'll get to enjoy what's left on it.

+Dylan McCool Absolutely, That car, sadly, is way beyond any but the most experienced and brave restorer as what you can see is only the very tip of the iceberg. Once you start stripping it down I would lay good money that there will be whole lot more serious rot...
