I turn 60 next month. When I was 5 years old I remember my grandma pulling in our driveway with a brand spanking new red 1968 Cougar. She was showing my mom how the headlights went up and down. She'd take me and my sister to the movies, and shopping, and just cruising around in the summer with the radio on. I specifically remember songs from the Doors, Petula Clark, and The 5th Dimension on the radio. Looking back now, guess I had a pretty cool grandma.

that is so similar to my story. I was 5 years old when my grandmother pulled up in a brand new 68 mustang. it had a j code 302 (4 barrel, 10.5 to 1 compression) with 4 speed, traction lock rear with 3:50 to 1 rear diff. I still have that car, I am the second owner.

Great video here Kevin and Angus!! With a lot of antique manufacturers (most often Fords on the channel), whether it be vehicles with wider tolerances within the valvetrain or the cast iron components or even just simple engineering designs, it is a testament to the builders that they were indeed built tough. Those 351 Windsors' live up to that definition.

Mercury Cougars have a special place in my heart. My very first car in 1975 was a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 midnight blue with silver blue leather interior with woodgrain dash and every available option including power everything including windows. It had a 302. I had a friend of mine that had a 1970 with a 428cj, sadly it had been hit really hard in the backend. When I was home on leave I test drove a 67 Cougar GTE that had a 427 four speed manual from the factory. I should have bought it, I had the cash, one that got away.

Stuck clutches. Sometimes if you get the engine hot, so the flywheel gets hot, then drive round and round with the pedal wedged down they'll eventually break free. I've done this with tractors that have been sitting a long time with some success. The flywheel expands with heat at a different rate than the clutch linings do, sometimes it's enough to break them free.

A friend I know bought a 1969 Mercury Cougar. His is the XR-7, which is a luxurious version. Built in November 5th of 1968 at the Dearborn assembly plant. A California car that has no rust and was sold by Bob Phillipi Lincoln/Mercury in Oakland, California on April 18th, 1969. It's in good shape but just needed to be cleaned up to be driven around. The cars has all the toys IE air conditioning, rear window defogger, power windows, power locks, power steering, rally wheels, vinyl roof, AM/FM stereo radio, automatic transmission. Engine is a 351 Windsor with 4 barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, disc brakes. Color is Wimbledon white with black vinyl roof and black leather interior.

With working rear brakes it is easy enough to break the clutch to flywheel 'rust-seal' by putting the rear up on axle stands so the rear wheels are off the ground, starting up in gear, and then just gently applying the brakes until the 'seal' gives up . . and you have separation! I have had to do this a few times on a manual stick rarely used Valiant 225, and it works every time.

My dad just brought home a few weeks ago a 1951(ish) Sterling Semi truck, big old cummins diesel, sat in a barn in Washington state for 42 years. He go it running and drove it off the trailer on the 42 y/o diesel fuel. Cab is falling apart because its a wood structure with sheet metal nailed to the outside and had literally a foot of mouse house on the floor. Barn finds are the best.

69 was the first year of the 351 Windsor. They were rated at 290 horsepower from the factory with the four barrel carburetor. I had one. Had a lot of get up and go for a small Ford block

351 winsor can be tuned up , to scream 😱. Perfect , i know they use to have the vacuum lines hooked up to the front head light covers, bad design , they make a electric motor replacement to open an close the front head lamps. Thanks for posting what a awesome car.

In 1977 i bought a 69 Cougar for $600 it looked like this one. I was 19 year old. Got it on a Friday nite, Saturday morming had it repainted, Blue. Few weeks later me & my Dad(Big Beefy.. im Lil Beefy) who did interiors on cars & truck bench seats, re-upostried the inside in black diamond plete naugahide. Seats, dash, door & back pamels, sundeck & all. The inside was just like a 69 Mustang. Had that Kool Cougar for 9-10 years & was running when i sold it to move to Texass from Tennesse. Thats one car i really wish i still had. Thankx for the flash back! I even raced it at local dragstrip! Thankx again.. for a few mins there... I was 19 again.

I bought a 67 cougar xr7 from my father in law and I finally got it roadworthy to take it to its first car show this year. It was in a really bad shape and it fought me so much to get it where it’s at now. It’s a beautiful car but be aware that parts for those cars are more expensive. Now I got my 10 year old son working on it so he learns to get his hands dirty and get him to have confidence working on cars. I really enjoy spending time with him working on it and seeing him enjoy working on it. He knows that he will own it when he turns 18. Good video guys!

Love the car, love the process. Freaked-out by the wind chimes and overcast sky in the drive-around shots near the end; thought I was watching the prelude to an ‘80s/‘90s made-for-TV nuclear attack movie 😆 Big Mustang fan so Mercury Cougars hold a special place in my heart. Great to see another one have a secure future 🤟🏼

I love that Cougar! My second car was a 1968 base model Cougar with a 289, (my first car was a 1963 Impala with a 283).bought in 1972. My '68 came with a 3 speed manual but I swapped it to a classmate for his 4 speed from a 1967 Mustang 2+2.. I built the engine hot and drag raced it from 1974 to 1976. It won a LOT of races.
