This dirty 1966 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350H was a hit the last time the Mustang Club of America celebrated at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama. Now, 15 years later, Andy Vann and his wife Mary Ann load their still unwashed GT350-H into a trailer for the 60th Anniversary Mustang show.
Andy Vann bought the used Hertz Rent-A-Racer in 1967 from Jim Skinner Ford in Birmingham, Alabama for $2900 (corrected from $2500). He and his future wife, Mary Ann, dated in the sporty black coupe. After they were married in 1969, Mary Ann took the keys and used the Shelby as her daily driver. Each year her Mustang got more and more attention everywhere she went. So many people tried to buy it, that it made her uncomfortable. Mary Ann parked it for good after a man followed her home demanding she sell the car to him. Andy drove it a few more years but locked it away in 1980.
In 2009, a friend from the Barber Motorsports Museum suggested he drive the car to the 45th Anniversary Mustang show. Andy tuned up the long dormant Mustang V8 and made his way to Leeds using the handbrake to stop. Crowds gathered and tens of thousands saw the original-owner holding court answering questions for three days.
“I never talked so much in my life,” said Vann.
The dirty black and gold Hertz car rental legend was solidified when people looked inside the GT350H. It was a time capsule. Chewing tobacco, S&H Greenstamps, and a vintage Pepsi can littered the cabin. The Shelby Mustang looked like someone had locked it away in 1980 and forgot about it. Judging by the crowds surrounding Andy, they loved it.
It's 2024 and the 60th Anniversary Mustang show is happening at Barber. Vann and his wife load up the old car that has lived in their garage for more than 57 years. Will the crowd love it? Will they want to hear the stories?
The smiles on Andy and Mary Ann are all you need to see. This is one car they are glad they have kept in original, survivor condition. All the memories and mishaps for the world to see.
Drop a comment if you've got a family treasure that you'll never sell.
Thanks for watching!

I rented one of these on June 21, 1966 from Hertz in San Diego; daily fee was $19. I drove it hard street racing that night and the brakes failed when I drove into my folks driveway. I was off to Marine Corps boot camp the next day, and Hertz towed the car away. No charge because of the break failure. Sure had fun with that black and gold GT350H!

I have a Junkyard Life story about my 67 Mustang that I still own today. Back in 1978, I was 16-years old and had just moved to So.California the year before. My parents opened a wrecking yard in Fontana and we regularly bought Salvage Certificate Insurance Company wrecks from a place in Colton Ca. (called Country Club Storage or something like that). The storage lot had Closed Bid Auctions every month and my older brother bid the $442 that won the high bid for my Mustang. The car had been through the wringer due to daily driving, then got sideswiped. I would say I got the car in otherwise 99% original condition (less all the wear and tear of Barstow California driving) The damage was somewhat minor but included the right front suspension, the right fender, right door and ended at the front of the rear quarter panel. $120 later, I had a matching-paint fender, door and suspension parts. I then had to get Brake, Lamp & Smog inspections to get the DMV to re-title the car and I was driving it within a week. As a young driver, I didn't exactly treat the car with the respect that I could have but I did end up doing a budget-restoration to it in 1980 (this after wrecking it 3-times in between!). Well, 20-years of daily driving, I kept the car mostly STOCK and I managed to not do much more damage (besides wear & tear). The car made it's way back to my Home State of Ohio in 1998. I then parked it that winter and began collecting parts & pieces to ultimately do a full Concours Restoration where now the car wins MCA GOLD (Concours Driven classification). I took many pictures of the restoration and have helped countless people that endeavor to do the same to other cars. I'm not sure if I can mention it but Concours Mustang (dot-com) was the key to getting the quality restoration work done that I managed to do myself (very little other outside help was solicited). Since July of 2022, I have been to 7-judged shows in two years (at the time of writing this). Every show so far, I have left with an award (or three). Taking what was in 1978, a throw-away wreck, fixing and saving it for a lifetime of adventure, I must say, I would never have guessed that I could actually have accomplished my childhood goal of keeping, driving, then restoring in my old age...my very first car! Who would treat a car like that like that ? I’m a Mopar or no car guy and I wouldn’t treat her like that !

The car is a magnet at the 60th MCA show just as it is, original and unwashed since 1980. I doubt a car wash is in the plans.

If it runs and drives I totally fail to understand the "its not been washed since 1980" thing. WTF? This car would still be just as cool if it was cleaned up. I did not say repainted, just clean.
