Everything you wanted to know about the Roland Juno series of hardware synthesizers (Juno-106, Juno-60, Juno-6) and their most popular software emulations. I compare the plugins by Arturia, TAL, Roland, and Cherry Audio to find out which one provides the best Juno vibe and most authentic sound.
I must warn you up front - this video is long. It is intended for the Juno enthusiasts who love the instrument and who wants to dig deep. I play no presets, scrolling from sound to sound. I use my 35 year history of using the Juno-106 to find the true Juno character in each of these plugins.
Viewers with a casual interest in the Juno-106 synthesizer will also find this video of interest as in gives a good history of the instrument and explains what makes it unique. I also try to clarify all features on the software and how it compares to the original hardware.
You can also subscribe to my other video channel that features music created using the Roland Juno-106 (and HS-60) synthesizer: / @brenthaesekermusic7323

I had a copy of the Roland (demo) and Cherry Audio (demo). Ended up buying cherry audio as it worked well in cakewalk and reason (elements 9) I had tried other versions but these two came out well. For me Cherry Audio was the best out of the box version to run with. Nice review though, thanks for putting this out there.

I own the Arturia Jun-6V, and the iOS version of the TAL U-NO-LX. I owned a Juno 106 for about a decade and it is probably the synth I regret selling the most out of the countless keyboards and modules I have used. I am gonna say that my personal favorite is the Arturia, they put a lot of effort into getting things right. I wish they had a mode that cosmetically emulated the 106, but that’s a minor quibble. I am tempted to buy the Mac version of the TAL, mainly because it’s so inexpensive and you can never have enough Junos! 😀 I also like the Tyrell N6 as it delivers a lot of that classic Juno flavor. I will NEVER subscribe to Roland’s synth club. I despise subscriptions and will fight against that business model till the day I die. 😉

I considered including the Tyrell in my roundup, but decided to try and stay with plugins more true to the original synth. The Tyrell is a great plugin though and I can't believe it's free too. Yes, you can never have too many Juno plugins!

I just bought a 106 so I’m excited to do my own comparisons. I don’t have the softube and haven’t demo’d cherry audio (I’ve never really been impressed with cherry) but the Roland cloud sounds good to me and it’s what got me into wanting the real thing. For me it’s all about the envelopes that separate the vst from hardware. There’s a tightness and a snappiness that the soft synths haven’t quite nailed yet. It’s a dead giveaway when using as a bass or lead.

"Back in the day" my friend had a Juno 106, while I had a Juno 60. His 106 sounded softer, darker - which I thought made pads and soft strings sound good, while my Juno 60 had a slightly punchier, crisper sound to it, which was great for synth basses, sizzling string pads and slightly brighter poly-synth sounds. My 2 c. I liked the sound of both and would gladly have owned both. Having said that, when I discovered a Jupiter 6 at a music store, I was blown away. But it had a $3,500 price tag. Funny that they now go for tens of thousands. :)

Great feedback on the Juno 60 vs 106! I've also owned a number of Jupiters (6's and an 8). Used to buy used Jupiter-6's for around $600! That was the late 80's and 90's. Crazy prices now. Used Juno-106's would go for $250. I miss those days.

It is the other way around , Juno 60 sounds rounder ,softer and less edgy than a 106 , basically a 106 sat better in a mix when using multiple sounds from it

Very long review but generally agree with your ratings. The Roland Cloud experience was similarly frustrating for me so I said screw it to Roland and wont have any of that. Haven't tried the Arturia or DCO but so far my experience with emulations vs. hardware from Arturia have not been good. Bought the TAL U-NO-LX and it sounds and looks very good for a Juno-60 (I do have a real 106 so not so much in need for that as software).

Hi; my experience only with Arturia v Collection 9, Roland Cloud Manager, and memories from real 106 by the past: I'm a big fan of Arturia, they did a great job with some new features (It's a Juno 6). With Roland, ACB version (not the Zencore extension), it's like the real one, and the sound is more punchy than Arturia (but it's possible to add some Fx too warming the sound...). I'm in love with Roland Cloud Manager, specially some really vintage sounding synth: SH2 and Jupiter 4; they did great great job with ACB technology, for most user who don't know real synth, Zencore technology is very good too.

With a final grade of 5/5 and a list price of $25 the DCO-106 from Cherry Audio is definitely the winner no doubt, although reading the comments I found that the reviewer himself had a nasty issue with it. Nevertheless it can happen to any plugin it's very concerning. In second place my choice is the TAL-U-No-LX for $60. I am still deciding between the two ones (besides there is also the Model 84 from Softube in my list that is being sold by $79). The absolutely cool thing that *ALL* paid plugins - no exception - hit the nail in the head was including the fabulous arpeggiator that existed in the previous version of the original keyboard (Juno 60) and that unfortunately was removed from the 106. I never will understand why Roland engineers did this. Finally I don't know what Arturia guys are thinking for offering their version for $149. Seriously? They are completely out of a serious competition (unless for those consumers who believe that expensive is better) because their product has nothing to justify such a rip off.
@WorshipBlender

Thank you for the good feedback. All the Arturia plugins are pricy on their own - but their value is when bought as part of the full V Collection. I think I got the Arturia Juno, Moog Vocoder, Oberheim OBXa and a few others as part of the V Collection 8 upgrade for like $49. So in that regard it makes the Arturia version the most affordable. Honestly though, all of them are good. Believe it or not I still like using the freebie TAL Juno at times because it has it's own vibe going for it.
@Motocicleiros
@Motocicleiros Жыл бұрын
@@WorshipBlender Hello and thanks for answering! Wow, $49 by the V Collection is really a steal and for this price I *certainly* would buy a copy of it (the same package is costing $599 now 😥). For coincidence I *just* bought one of their small controllers (the Minilab 3) and seems that it's coming with the Analog Lab Intro that includes a selection of nice 500 presets from the V Collection. Being only a home self producer composing and recording my own stuff I think that I will wait until it arrives and try it before buying anything else. However, had been an owner of an actual Juno-106 myself decades ago, probably I think I won't escape from purchasing a couple of the awesome emulators from Cherry Audio. I am still interested in the DCO-106 and the Mercury 4 looks like to be simply stellar.
@WorshipBlender
@WorshipBlender Жыл бұрын
@@Motocicleiros Hopefully I didn't mislead you on the V Collection pricing. I meant once you're in their eco system (I had V Collection 6 and V Collection 4) you can upgrade for cheap and get lots of new stuff at discount. Using Black Friday sales and whatnot you can also get into V Collection a lot cheaper to begin with. As a long time Arturia customer with V Collection I got Pigments at a super discount price and have gotten free upgrades to it since. However, since you just got MiniLab 3, technically you're in their eco system now, so you should make sure your stuff is registered on their website and watch for deals. Side note, I have the MiniLab 3 as well and did a review of it on this channel about 2 months ago. It's a fun little controller. As for AnalogLab, it is a fantastic library of sounds. It has always been a bit buggy for me on the older versions and a bit bloated on all versions I have used. But it will give you a great overview of the Arturia plugins. I also have been looking at the Mercury 4 plug from CA too, just haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. That looks like a fun synth and a great deal.

Hi, about the arturia vst, imo it seems like you're not used to using arturia plugins. They can 100% be midi mapped, transposed, polyfony. Also the presets do can easily be changed and if you want the 'standard' juno sound, just use the default template you can select in the presets. They even included a whole section to learn all the (extra) functions. And even more it is NKS ready (for use in komplete) and of course their own controllers and their analog lab software. To me Arturia is actually the best out of all.

Actually, I'm a long time Arturia user - started using Arturia plugins around 2006 and just upgraded from V6 to V8, so now I have the Arturia Juno as well. Some of my issues may have been with the demo version, but I haven't had a chance to confirm yet. I still like the Tal the most, but that's just personal preference. I agree that Arturia makes great stuff!
