The biggest film of it's time, Jurassic Park sent Spielberg to new heights, brought Crichton back in vogue and sparked a worldwide obsession with inaccurate paleontology! The question does remain though.. has the film stood the test of time, or did it just scrape by in the first place thanks to it's flashy effects?

Honestly, as nonsensical as the Rex appearing at the end was, the alternative was WAY worse. Originally, the raptors were going to killed by being impaled on the collapsing dinosaur bones, but Spielberg realized how anti climactic that was and decided to bring the T-Rex back because he knew that the T-Rex had to have one final hurrah. He couldn't just have it destroy a car, chase a jeep, and eat a gallimimus and not have all that lead up to something.

One - storyboarded but never filmed - ending had Hammond save them from the last 'raptor, by shooting it from the doorway. In theory the ending made great sense, as it shows him taking first hand responsibility for dealing with his wayward creation's, whilst still being saddened that it had come to it. (would've given his last look back at the park before having to board the helicopter more weight too) That said: the Rexy ending is more exciting.

@@jimtaylor294 its a shame the rex ending is two big for them to have done a double an extra raptor or dino for one final shock that lets hammond have his end too would have been nice but with how big and surprising rexxy's save is both would have clashed with the other a bit too much than just using one... so hey. you have a trex may aswell use it right?. perhaps maybe that they were going for a more fun movie with just the undertones of other things influenced the more exciting but less thought provoking end... well other than the thoughts usually associated with the rex entrance/save lol.

About the Raptor eggs, the area that Grant and the kids were heading through was apparently in the old paddock that the Raptors had been kept in before they were moved to the high quarantee pen(as seen in the opening scene). So they had basically been breeding long before Grant and company were even approached by Hammond to come inspect the island. Good review. Even for it's obvious faults this film has a special place in my heart both for the original concept conceived by Michael Crichton and the sheer atmosphere of the world. Even the inaccuracy of the "retrosaurs" actually makes sense in that they're designed by committee like any man made theme park attraction would be. The only difference is that, well, they're actually living organisms in-universe which makes them unique. They exist to meet the expectations of the late 80's/earlier 90's public. And the public got what it expected, a kickass presentation and a classic movie.

The reason for Nedry being in a rush was because he had to be at the boat by a specific time, we see this when he calls a dock worker who tells him he's running out of time and they need to get the boat going ASAP.

RetroGamerAaron His death was also way darker in the book. With a properly sized Dilophosauris, has no frillbut did spit poison. It was described as frothy bubbly and white, tingling the skin mildly but then blinded him completely within a matter of moments in the eyes. He then fell over and the creature picked up his head in its jaws, lifted him up and sliced open his belly with its foreclaws. It then went into detail about Nedry feeling his own intestines slipping from his belly and begging it to end quickly. Twas a brutal scene.

At the time of the movies release, Deinonychus was considered subspecies of Velociraptor and honestly...could you pass on the name Velociraptor? “It sells itself” - Michael Crichton The same year the movie released; only a few months later in fact, the Utah-Raptor was discovered and they called it “Spielberg’s monster”

I am aware that this could of been brought up already but I did not go through all the comments to see. The reason Nedry was "running" was not because he was fleeing the island, though in a way he was. He was trying to reach the last boat off the island. He had one of Dodgson's men on the boat to hand off the Shaving Cream storage container to (We see him talking to someone on his computer, "got to give me 15 minutes' line). So it was a race to the boat to get the container to the person so he could get the other half of his money. So turning off all the fences allowed him to by pass all the electric fence locks (like an airlock type gimmick) that we see him having to open. The park did not have those security fences powered by a different power source. They were powered through the fence itself. So turning off the fence left the electric fence locks unpowered and easy to open.

Velociraptors of Skyrim Yeah, trying to read up (spent longer researching the movie than I did watching it.. oy, so much to dig through!) on that, there was talk back and forth that some thought Deinonychus was Velociraptor, or they were in the same branch or the like... and that Michael Crichton got the two mixed up when he wrote the book, or.. someone else.. it's a bit hard to figure out which one is the most accurate account. In any case, I think it's safe to say that people done fucked up.

I have to wonder: if ON switch is far away from the control center and dangerously close to raptor pen....why didn't they first sent someone there with a radio BEFORE turning the system off? Like "I'm there. Let's do this", turns the power off, "Turn it back on", turns the power back on and raptors probably fry themselves to death while thinking that the fence is permanently off. The end.

I'm pretty sure there was only enough coolant in the can to last 36 hours, so Nedry had to get to the boat before it left. That's why he couldn't wait and steal the embryos nearer to the end of his shift, or stick around and hide in plain sight. In the book, they got the Lysine through supplements from the vets. For the later movies, when dinosaurs are living outside of the park despite not having these supplements, it's explained by them having lysine-rich diets (e.g. beans and chicken). The latter is not an easy theory to buy into, but it works in the context of Jurassic Park.

The shotgun didn't jam, He just ran out of ammo. the shells they were using were slugs (Hence the bullet holes in the glass), and there was a severe lack of ammo on the island (Based on the book) The shotguns that WERE on the island had very VERY little ammo for them, as Hammond had built the park in a similar manner to a modern day zoo. He thought they wouldn't ever have to actually combat one of these animals, so there were more tranquilizer guns on the island than shotguns. The shotguns that were there were for emergencies only, as in "A raptor or dinosaur attacking a feeder or visitor."

Yeah the mystery of the dinos getting off the island in the book was sort of important overall. The computer systems that were responsible for keeping tabs on the Dinos. Weren't designed to keep track of "the body count rising". Since they weren't supposed to be breeding. Just would alert if it dropped below a specific number. So the dinos breeding in the wild was ACTUALLY plot relevant. Because dinos were able to stowaway on ships without the computers alerting anyone.

They are now canonically not raptor eggs that are shown, despite the two toed footprints eluding as much. In JP 2 there are documents that can be seen that state the current animals on the island as they sent a group to survey It too see if it had viable specimens to be captured for the San Diego park but after realising there weren't they went to Ilsa Sorna. Anyway those documents show that the sweep of the island found 3 raptor and their status is all deceased. Its widely believed in the fandom that the intention was for them to be baby raptors and use them to set up sequels but ultimately it was changed and the scene was just left in as it demonstrated the dinos were now breeding

The reason why jurassic park worked so well is because of Spielberg’s directing. Pure and simple. We’re almost always shown the dinosaurs from a human perspective which means as a viewer we connect with what we are seeing on screen. There are no gimmicks. The lost world, although a much flawed film was also similar. However the next 3 films all lost that sense of human perspective and therefore any credibility with what we are shown on screen. Jurassic Park is a masterpiece of film making that will never be replicated.

About Grant finding a velociraptor in Montana - what the jurassic park series uses as its "velociraptors" are actually what is known today as Deinonychus. But back when Michael Crichton was writing jurassic park, the deininychus was still known primarily as a genus of velociraptor, and the movies went along with that. So if you see people talking about the scientific falsities in how the velociraptors are portrayed, just know that the only thing wrong with the "velociraptors" is their name

i.stack.imgur.com/BCpvr.jpg Thats a storyboard type thing from production that shows the lay of the land for the T-rex break out scene, as you can see the rex breaks out much further up than where the car falls off the cliff. This can be seen in film as when it breaks out and does its first roar it is actually between both the ford explorers. The above storyboard shows that Ford Explorer number four is the one to be pushed off the edge and during the initial flipping of the car it is actually pushed further up the road so that it is past the moat wall and that is where the drop off is that it is pushed off. This makes the whole scene now make sense but I still agree that the way the scene is shot leads the viewer to interpret that the car was pushed through the gap the Rex broke out of. However with the board in mind either think back to the scenes or watch them and you realise that its correct. The car flips on its roof, Lexi and Grant hide around the front of the car, the T-rex gives it an inquisitive nudge forward which takes it past the T-rex enclosures walls and ajacent to the moat, Lex and Alan slide around the side of the car to avoid the the T-rex with their backs now facing the drop of the Moat, Trex nudges the side of the car forcing them to climb down the moat.

I think it's interesting that they took stuff from the book and added it to all three movies. Like the waterfall scene in the second movie is from the book and the pterodactyl scene from the third movie is in the book

8:40 I've heard theories that the Triceratops is actually undergoing the transition from female to male and that's why she seems sick. The lilac berries are just a red herring and a homage to the book.

Dude, despite the scientific inaccuracies, I still rate this baby 7.5/10. This was a staple in my childhood, and I loved watching this movie even as an adult. Richard Attenborough's John Hammond was my favorite guy, even though he funded the project to bring dinosaurs to life. I also agree, they should've used Avian and Reptilian DNA, I'm also having a hard time figuring out why they used Frog DNA? Other than because the Plot says so. I also wanna put out about the dino sounds, like the real T-Rex's sounds are arguably scarier than this movie's iconic roar, the infrasounds (which is low frequency) where the Rex doesn't have to open its jaws to create sound, and its vibration is powerful enough to shake your core. My point being, I'm crossing my fingers some form of media will actually learn from Paleontology and give these extinct species the dignity of at least semi-accurate portrayals. Though I did take one good thing of note from this movie, how to use animatronics with CGI, rather than completely going with CGI, or completely going with animatronics. I figure why not use both, like have the CGI make the animatronic look more lifelike, or cover up some flaws in the animatronic (i.e. TMNT 90's with the double mouths scene with Donatello). Special effects should be utilized in a grand way, not just be used in half-ass pursuits for a quick buck.

There's a reason for the filler. They were going to film Samuel L. Jackson's death scene, but thanks to a hurricane were unable to. So they went with the filler instead.

Nedry had to get the embryos to the docks before the ship left, which it would be gone for at least 24 hours, whilst the can of shaving cream the embryos were in had enough coolant for roughly 36 hours before they went bad.

One thing that kind of bothered me was at around the point where they get the tour with the video, john has this onscreen john interacting with him and taking his dna right? Was this implying john would be the tour manager every single time??

I'm gonna correct a issue, now turning the power off "everywhere" was pretty stupid and not needed, unless there were cameras there too and it would be "fishy" if only certain ones went out. But the reason that character (forgot how to spell his name) didn't wait and escape later was because of that video chat he had. He was told because of the storm the ship he needed to get the Dnio DNAs to had to leave, so he either needed to do it right there and then or leave his chance at big millions. He didn't have a choice, the storm really messed everything up. Don't complain about him trying to reach the boat instead of waiting the storm out or until his shift ends, because he had to do it right then and there or the boat was gonna leave and he'll be in big trouble. Could he have gotten the DNAs to whoever was paying him even after the boat left or was that his one and only chance? Idk, but at there was at least a reason given,

I just realized the T-Rex in these films are FAR larger than they should be..for dramatic effect of course. But yeah, that's the least of one's nitpicks when it comes to scientific accuracy.

11:24 I'm sure this has been explained but that spot is actually several jeep lengths away from where the T-Rex walked out of the enclosure. When the Rex spun the Jeep around, Grant and Lex moved with it. The cliff is the barrier between the Rex paddock and the paddock next to it. The scene is incongruous but the geography makes sense.

To be fair on the whole wrong raptors and no feathers deal, Spielberg said he wanted to do the dinosaurs the way they are seen in the film as chicken sized feathered lizards are not the most terrifying of film monsters. As to clashes with the book the film began production while the book was still a manuscript and was well underway by the time it was published.

So, I realize it's several years too late to be commenting this, but I feel compelled to explain that the reason why Dennis was in such a hurry was b/c he found out through a video conversation via one of the dock's cameras that the ship he was supposed to leave on after stealing the embryos was going to leave earlier than expected due to the hurricane passing through.

Shaving Cream is cold...once it heats up...the embryos would die because embryos have to be kept at a constant temperature for a certain amount of time to survive. If the can were to heat up...the embryos would die, making them worthless to ingen

There is a reason for the randon drop off in the trex paddock. All of the paddocks have a moat so the dinosaurs don't get near the electric fence, where the trex walked out is a few meters over from the drop off in the scene. There are videos that explain this. I watch a lot of Klayton Fioriti's videos. He's mostly a Jurassic Park/World channel.

In the book three people gets killd that survive. (witch would have killed the following movies) Dr Wu gets sliced and eaten by a raptor. Malcolm die from his injuries. And Hammond gets killd by some Compsognathus, that the book say have a narcotic venom in their mouths (the small ones who killed Peter Stormare in JP: Lost World)
