For the neck I'd say it's a bit of a downgrade in articulation but it improves the aesthetic. Because with the hinges, you have to rotate the neck a bit to get them into certain poses and in doing so what the bottom of the neck tends to end up on the side and can look a bit wonky. But the ball joint makes it smoother and makes the neck look more natural. For me the hinges were a bit of an issue because of this.
