I totally agree. Two passes is too fast and essentially unproductive when your waiting on another truck when you could have had a smaller machine moving the same amount of material with less fuel

First of all is the fact that mine operators who are true professionals in the industry, always strive to load their haul trucks in 3 passes. Until fairly recently that method was not possible with the ultra - class trucks. Meaning haul trucks with a load capacity of 400 short tons, or slightly more. So up until recently those trucks required at least 4 passes to load fully. Currently that issue has been resolved. P&H (now under the Komatsu banner) has introduced the P&H 4800XPC SHOVEL. This massive machine features a bucket capacity of 135 short tons. So now the ultra - class trucks can be loaded with just 3 passes.If I had to guess the price tag on that giant shovel, I’d say between 25 - 30 million US dollars.But keep in mind,, that type of machine will have a very long working life. Twenty Years of service would be totally doable,provided the maintenance program is strictly adhered to.Regarding hydraulic excavators, it seems that it’s going to be quite a while for them to 3 pass load the ultra-class haul trucks.
