Good reaction. Legend 1997 was the title of the show - it was December 21st 2013, the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday - she was born in 1997. There is a translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit with understanding what was happening: "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains... little time.." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "Just Another Reactor desu" (I am Just Another Reactor). All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience (and yes, growling vocals on a backing track) while the lead singer is crucified. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum beat is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear a neck brace most of the time, especially when performing. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times (plus at least a couple more in the Budokan shows earlier this year), the last with a performance like this was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames. Did I mention? #notacult

Fun fact, if you look closely, the "DNA" helix design in the intro to "Babymetal DEATH" is also on Su's stick mic that she uses in "Headbanger". There is also a Metallica homage in the "Virgin Su" statue that collapses at the end. The whole piece is about death and, critically, rebirth. The Kami Band are all men and dressed as spirits of the dead...kamis are Japanese spirits. The drummer is Hideki Aoyama and there is a backing track and you can also hear the crowd, the lyrics are simple, but very important - so keep reading. "Babymetal Death" here is the last song in the concert and is used as a big, insane, messianic, pun finale rather than the usual introduction. The manic excitement of Headbanger and the emotion of Unfinished Akatsuki came before it and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the context and the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. At this point we need to emphasize that Babymetal is #notacult. The Christian crucifixion iconography here juxtaposes death and rebirth. This is echoed in the chant at the beginning; "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". While this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together just as in the crucifixion and Su goes through the transformation from a school girl into a medal goddess to fulfill the plans of the Fox God. The Japanese are far less precious about religion than most Westerners and take aspects of whatever religion works for them in a particular situation. The appropriation of the cross and the "Mary statue" here just serves the theatrical purpose to tell a story. Did I mention #notacult? Next reaction should be "Headbanger Legend 1997" or if you are really brave "Tales of the Destinies" from the Tokyo Dome.

@@JustAnotherReactor - I think what you heard was at least mostly and possibly entirely the crowd. It's difficult to say for sure. I thought it was mostly backing track until i watched the all female concerts they did in Japan. The chants sounded completely different. So it's at least mostly the crowd. Not that i doubted that the crowd was loud, but i just didn't know how much of that was picked up by the stage microphones vs the backing track. But i assume that the crowd chants that are on the studio versions (most of them) are also on the backing track.

The thing about BabyMetal… no two songs are the same. From old to new songs, I live them all . More for some than others but all are great. That chanting us from the Japanese crowd. Japanese crowds are insane. They aren’t just there to be entertained but to support BabyMetal. But I’ve seen crowds during their world tours that are reaching the insanity of their Japanese counterparts. The crowd for their Forum concert in Los Angeles we’re going wild. The backing band are known as the Kami Band. Consisting of some of the best musicians in Japan. Equally loved by fans as BabyMetal ladies themselves. They, also, have toured the world with the Kami Band of the West. Made up of American musicians that are just as good.

The trilogy of death is from this show "Legend 1997" It's Suzuka Nakamoto's birth year. And it's the 3 last songs of the show Headbanger, Akatsuki (unfinished version) and Babymetal Death. The riff where you said maybe "Pantera" is actually from Metallica's One. It's about Su leaving the the idol pop world behind and being reborn as a metal goddess. Suzuka Nakamoto - Su-metal the lead singer born 1997-12-20 Yui Mizuno - Yuimetal (chubby cheeks) born 1999-06-20 Moa Kikuchi - Moametal (dimples) born 1999-07-04 The smiling guitarist is Mikio Fujioka (RIP) The other guitarist is Leda Cygnus Bass BOH Drummer Hideki Aoyama This show was to celebrate Su's 16th birthday (seitan sai) Their producer Kei Kobayashi "Koba-metal" is a real metalhead so he puts all kind of things in as a homage to other metal bands as X japan Metallica etc. There is not so much for lyrics they say their names followed by desu that in japanese is similar to death meaning "I am, we are" so I could say Jan desu meaning I am Jan 🤘🦊🤘🇸🇪/4

It's possible that Babymetal does know of Merciful Fate but it's not the girls or the band that writes the songs or produces the stage shows. The girls knew nothing of Metal before they became Babymetal. The band is session musicians who are hired to perform concerts. Their producer Koba (Kei Kobayashi) is in charge of the songs and stage shows etc. Koba is a music fan in general and a Metal fan. His two favorite groups seem to be Metallica and X--Japan but he seems to have a lot of influences. It's entirely possible he would know of any random Metal band. He seems to know quite a few they've done homages to too many groups to mention. But also they have a team, so it's probable that someone on the Babymetal team would know of any Metal band. It's sounds very corporate and it is. But this is clearly not primarily about money. You don't make Metal in Japan for money. Babymetal is about the love of Metal (and Jpop) and doing something unique. Nobody thought this would work. My favorite Koba quote is 'Metal doesn't have dancing, so i thought it would be interesting to add that.' To answer your other question they're chanting and spelling out Babymetal Death, the title of the song. The lyrics are just Moa-Metal Death, Yui-Metal Death, Su-Metal Death, Babymetal Death. But it's a play on words. A Japanese person saying 'Death' sounds like a Japanese person saying 'Desu' (the U is silent). Desu means i am/we are. So they are also introducing themselves. I am Moa Metal, I am Yui-Metal, I am Su-Metal. We are Babymetal. And the crowd could also be chanting 'We Are'. That has always been their thing that the fans are part of Babymetal. We are all Babymetal. They call their fans 'The One'. They had a song 'The One' dedicated to the fans.

So a lot of assumptions that people would make based on other groups are just wrong. For example a lot of Metal fans assume that there was this Metal band that was good and these 3 girls got the vocals. That isn't what happened at all. It was the opposite. The girls were popular and booking concerts before they had a band. They put on a great show even with recorded music.

The band playing the instruments is Kami Band (all male). Babymetal is the front 3 girls. This is an intro instrumental music/song. Introducing themself as Su-metal Desu (ignore the "u"), Yuimetal Desu, Moametal Desu, and B.A.B.Y.M.E.T.A.L Desu (Desu sounds like Death). Normally perform at the beginning of their concert. I let other BM's fans tell you about the "crucifixion". Legend 1997 is the year lead singer Su-metal was born and not the year of the concert. Great reaction! Thanks.

What? This is just your typical story about crucifying a sixteen year old girl so she can be reborn as a Metal Goddess to unite the light and dark side of Metal and bring them all into The One. We are The One. Together. Nothing to see here. PS: Babymetal doesn't use the usual devil horns. They use a variant that resembles a fox head in honor of the Fox God. Put your middle and ring finger out above your thumb and you got it. It's called a Kitsune. Kitsune up!

As you can see Babymetal can put on a show like not many others. :-) What Babymetal is really do is 2 things: just trying to do their own interpretation of what other metal bands have done/do. And do things other metal bands could/would never do (doesn't fit their image, etc.). Like dancing to metal music. But leadsinger Su-metal has said she had a look from the side of the stage at a Rammstein festival closing performance and felt like Babymetal still has a lot of room to grow for their own shows. She was really impressed by how Rammstein staff worked hard behind the scenes to make the show work. I do know this show was in 2013 and from memory in 2016 King Diamond and Babymetal performed at the same festival in Europe. Aesthetics style (not music) of King Diamond reminds me a little bit of the metal band Avatar who opened on Babymetal's tour in 2019 in the US. From what I could see Avatar was great live.

If you liked this one, try the new entrance track; "In the Name Of". Or if you want to try something different, maybe "Rondo of Nightmare" with the "Mischief of Gods" intro. Or if you want that ballad that you mentioned, then probably "Akatsuki". Either the performance from Budokan Black Night, or the "Unfinished" version from Legend 1997 (which would have been part of that "trilogy of death" that was originally requested). As long as it's Babymetal, it will be worth watching. You have barely scratched the surface, and I think you will find a lot to like.

well i think some people already answer your questions, so i'm gonna give you something else if i can :) Welcome to the Fox Hole \m/ Girls said this is one of the most physical demanding song, and you can see the reason, that's why they normally used this song as a opener and a way to warm up for next performances, in this case this was at the end of the show. The neckbrace is part of BM lore and is a tribute for Yoshiki from X-Japan (if you don't know who is he, you should be, he's like a semi-god for japaneses) Neckbrace first appearence was during Headbanger! official MV. Yoshiki suffer serious injuries during a live concert while headbanging so hard, after that he needs to use neckbrace to avoid doing that movement, he still playing thou, he's a metal god legend, so when BM and fans uses neckbrace is to summon the spirit of metal god ;) This was during SuMetal 16th birthday and she was sacrificed as j-pop idol and reborn as a queen metal goddess, Kitsune-sama has bless all of us. \m/ During an interview KobaMetal (the producer behind BM) said that when he was travelling for concerts abroads around 2015 he came to know a band like Ghosts and he was interested in discover that band doing the same thing they're were doing theatrically and artistically, so anyone thinking those bands are satanic and such they're just saying nonsenses, they're just doing a show in which they're playing a role, and in order to be convincent (like an actor in a movie film) they need to perform their part like they're mean it, and the audience must be part of it and they're an important ingredient because other way it wouldn't work. That's what we said all the time -"notacult"- , unless you are or want to feel part of it. :V Don't know about Merciful Faith or the other band you mentioned but i'm pretty sure KobaMetal knows many bands and at least he must hear about them, he used to be a metal elitish before jumping into j-pop and other genres. One thing for sure about BM is they're like a chocolate box, you'll never know what's gonna hit you, every song is different and even the same song is performed in a unique way, so you got plenty of live versions worth to watch. Have fun enjoying the ride into the Fox Hole and kitsune up! \m/ LIVINGLEGEND NOTACULT 10BABYMETALYEARS

Other people have said that this is Su-Metal's 16th birthday show. The significance of this show is that earlier that year she graduated from the Idol group Sakura Gakuin from which BABYMETAL was formed, so this show is a coming of age as well as Su leaving behind her Jpop Idol roots and fully embracing her role as a Metal Goddess, this is also a big part of the group's lore which is explained fully in Su-Metal's 20th birthday concert Legend S - XX Baptism.

Great reaction man. Just to let you know that every song you listen to will be an adventure. There songs are all different and hit just about every Genre in Metal and beyond. You mentioned a lot of bands that you thought influenced the music and from what the band manager has said, Metallica was a major influence in this Music theater production. Quote from interview: "Band manager Kobametal, meanwhile, is a lifelong fan[of Metallica]. For Babymetal’s ‘Legend 1997’ concert at Makuhari Messe in Chiba later that year, he even oversaw the creation of a large statue of a woman who loomed over the band and collapsed, like Metallica’s iconic Lady Justice one. It’s a level of fandom that has allowed Babymetal to connect with fans of heavy music more easily. He remembers seeing the band [Metallica] at the legendary, 50,000-capacity Tokyo Dome in 1991, after they released The Black Album. It affected him the same way as it did Su-metal, altering his life forever, and ultimately leading him down the path he’s treading today. “The [Black] album brought a new perspective to the metal scene,” he explains. “They [Metallica] had a profound influence, and their sound was just so natural that I instantly became addicted to their music.” The whole Legend of 1997 concert was a themed production about the Birth, Life and Death (Transformation) of Su-Metal on her 16th birthday into a Metal Goddess.

You asked us you will get an answer but it just maybe a wall of text. *BABYMETAL - LEGEND 1997 CONCERT*. Song: BABYMETAL DEATH. The monologue at the start is in Japanese. So hear is (The English Translation of the opening Monologue). "Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven. It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess. The gene which has been determined from ancient time is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time. The apocalypse prophesied the DOOMSDAY. Towards it, there remains… little time… BABYMETAL DEATH is normally the song that they would open a show with as all there are doing is introducing themselves and geting the crowd fired up and ready for the rest of the show. The lyrics start with the crowd spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" then the girls tell us who they are "Su-metal desu (I am SU-Metal") , "Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal"), "Moametal desu (I am Moametal"), "BABYMETAL desu (we are Babymetal"), now this may look a little strange to you as when introducing themselves individually it is ("I am") yet when introducing themselves as a group it is ("we are"), lets explain that first thing when saying the word "desu" (the U is silent) so when Yui is introducing her self she says "Yuimetal des" but as Yui is saying the word "DES" at the end of saying it she will put her tongue between her teeth makeing a sound like "TH" so you get "Yuimetal des-th" and that put her tongue between her teeth makes the word "Des-th" mean (I am), now when they are introducing them selfs as a group they say "Babymetal des" but they don't put they tongue between her teeth at the end of the word "Des" this makes the word "Des" sound different and changes the meaning of it to (we are), ther is one more word to the lyrics of this and that is the fans line or word in this song they are to chant "Des-th" but even that neads explaining nothing is ever easy with Babymetal, they like to play with things especially words there sounds and meanings they noticed that when introducing themselves in Japanese saying the word "Des-th" ("I am") it sounds very much like the English word "DEATH" they liked that so for the fans part in this song it would be in English to chant "DEATH" repeatedly, all so that is were they got the song title as well it is not just *DEATH* the song title is *BABYMETAL DEATH*. Well that is it for the lyrics in this song they would do this twice then the music go's crazy good and the girls run around all over the stage interacting with the fans and geting them up on there feet bouncing and geting the fans chanting "Death Death Death Death Death Death" they would keep this going for a time ending up in one big chant from everyone of "BABYMETAL DEATH" a big explosion lot's of pyrotechnics end of introduction song everyone ready let the show begin. But this time BABYMETAL DEATH was not played at the opening of the concert it was at the very end of the concert the last of a five song encore, so why move this song from the opening to the end of the concert, well the (LEGEND 1997 CONCERT) was a special one from the beginning to the end but we are not getting it to that now this is about one song in it and of course it had a special role to play in this concert but one all bye it's self, the concert was named LEGEND 1997 because that was the year SU-METAL was born on the 20/12/1997 this concert was on the 21/12/2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as SU said once "this was her birthday party concert and that all the fans coming to her party to help her celibrate her 16th birthday was the best gift that she had received that year". So what was this songs role to be at this concert, well like it says in the opening monologue "receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess", now how did that work like this, the smoke that appears around SU's feet before she collapses was to put her to sleep, the crucifixion is the abandoning of being human but not before receiving the legendary corset (the neck brace), the scream her rebirth as a Goddess, and the chanting of "Death Death Death Death" with crossed kitsunes (the Fox sign) that is the army giving there Goddess her power, first Yui and Moa face the army and receive there power then they turn around and give that power to SU-Metal for she was never to be just a Goddess SU is a METAL GODDESS, she is our Queen, our Goddess. "All hail our QUEEN". "All hail The GODDESS of Metal". *SU-METAL*. Bye the way #NotaCult, most definitely #NotaCult and anyone claiming different will be dragged in front of your Goddess and thrown into the pit of frogs or if you catch her on a bad day she will just burn you. 🤘🦊🤘

Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto the J-Pop Idol to be reborn as Su-metal the Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.

I don't think the girls knew at that point who Mercyful Fate or King Diamond were, but surely the producer knew. Key Kobayashi, the guy who came up with the idea, writes the songs and it's the brain on most of what Babymetal does is an old time heavy metal person. He happened to be working in a pop idol label and for long time he wanted to go on with his idea of merging both things. When you read an interview to him, you quickly realize he is a very knowledgeable person on heavy metal and also all kinds of music. And the girls might have known, this show is 2013 and here he had been with the three girls in this project for already two years, they started at 12-13-12 years old. Koba was instructing them in metal music from the start. Today, that's 2021 and Su and Moa (Yui left the band) are still doing it, I'm pretty sure they know about all of this bands you mentioned pretty well. Probably even had conversations about music with a lot of those bands on the backstages, they have been in shows for close to eleven years already. And for a recommendation, check Amore. It isn't a ballad. Check the link in the Babymetal Reactor Resource with a logo in it for a safer on blocks version.

Nice reaction. The chants are a little of both backtrack and the crowd. The band is called Kami band (god band, the gods of guitars, bass, and drums) they are all men and a rotation of some of the best session musicians around they were summoned by the Fox God from the spirit world to support Babymetal in their live shows hence the corpse paint and burial robes. My first concert was King Diamond (Them tour) with Flotsam and Jetsam opening

Glad you liked it! Definitely Headbanger from the same show (Legend 1997) next if you want more heavy stuff and also some idea of the 'kawaii' side of BM that you haven't really seen much yet.

Great reaction! When it comes to Babymetal. Expect the Unexpected. Each of their song is very different. Yet still maintaining their core signature of their genre which are HEAVY + CATCHY. Ps: You are the most soft spoken metalhead I've seen on KZfaq. 😅🤣 No offense though. For the next Babymetal Reaction: Highly recommend Babymetal - Rondo Of Nightmare With Mischiefs Of Gods intro LIVE Other metal bands and performances you should check out: Nightwish - Ghost Love Score with Floor Jansen Nightwish - The Phantom Of The Opera with Tarja Turunen Rammstein - Du Hast Live in Paris Any MV from Ningen Isu, Maximum The Hormone and Unlucky Morpheus. Another three badass Japanese metal.

you should just overlay something over the video to keep them from getting blocked. we have all seen the videos so no issues with the overlay. Might make your life easier with fighting youtube. My recommendations are - Rondo of nightmare with mischiefs of the gods intro if you like the musicians featured. No Rain No Rainbow if you want a tear jerker of a ballad.

Would you try listen (and react if you want) to the conceptual album by The Warning called "Queen of the Murder Scene"? It's really amazing with very deep lyrics. By the way, I didn't know this band, and they sound brutal, I'm gonna listen them much more from now.

Believe me I've heard from a few people about quite a few things I've been wrong on. Especially #notacult. I was actually comparing the stage show and imagery to Mercyful Fate but not ever accusing them or their fans of being in any type of cult. Last night someone actually sent me a link to a video titled "Everything You Need To Know About BABYMETAL - A BABYMETAL Guide (UPDATED)". I'm going to watch it soon.
