Q tip is a company name. The Q stands for quality. Invented in 1923, Leo Gerstenzang saw his wife wrap a cotton ball on a toothpick. He originally called them Baby Gays and the name changed in 1926,

Q-Tip is a brand name and just like the Hoover-ing you mentioned the name stuck! Good guess :-) BT W I'm here to see how Gelatos and Gel Sticks work - thanks! Great point about obsessing over the background (and it's function!); I guess we try to bring the rest of the world to our art, but I forget I create art specifically as an antidote to the rest of the world.

I wanted to let you know (that is if you don't know yet), but the Koh-i-Nor Polycolors has a 12 set of the greys your wanting, that are also oil based like the polychromo's & they do blend. (I have the full set of Dick Blicks, BUT there made in the very same factory as the Koh-i-nors , same printing & color names too, BUT the difference is the size barrel of the pencil & the DB's are a harder lead a mix of wax & oil, but the Koh's are only oil. I have a small 24 set of the polycolor'& compared them to the DB's same colors BUT much smoother to color & blend with. And for me (I know not everyone feels the same) my top 2 very fav pencils are my Derwent Coloursofts & the Dick Blick's studio pencils. I personally hate the prisma's with a passion, (BUT like I said that's just me (don't need people upset I don't like the prisma's)

I have a couple questions to ask if I may. On the geloto's may I ask do they greasy through the other side of the paper? And also do you know if I can use the same finger tip technique with oil pastels too? I have a few of the geloto's but not the pretty ones you have I got the primary colors (I found them brand new at a local thrift store. )

I’ve used the gelatos on quite a few different types of paper and had no greasy marks on the reverse, so you should be fine. I can’t answer the question about the oil pastels, as I ‘ve never used them I’m afraid.

Your little color chart book is awesome! May I ask were did you get it from?

That book was a gift many years ago (It has since fallen to pieces!) so I can't help unfortunately. There are a lot of beautiful hand made sketchbooks on Etsy though, so maybe try there for something similar?

Hi Gem, I have just started this colour along! I was wondering if you have a tutorial on how to do the background using polychromos? Thanks. Sue

Hi Sue, unfortunately I haven’t done a tutorial. I only have one copy of this book, and I don’t think I have any other pictures that show something similar. If I were doing the background in pencil, I would use the side of the pencil and work in a circular motion (just like I do with my finger in this video) and build up gradual layers. I’d work on some areas more than others to give the slightly mottled effect I’ve achieved here. If you need pointers for that type of pencil technique, check out my one-pencil gradient and light sources videos in my ‘Colouring for beginners’ series- there is a playlist you can scroll through. Hope this helps, and if you need anything else, let me know.
