Like most Americans, I was really not a fan of football when the World Cup came to America in 1994, but I had a Dutch girlfriend so I watched the tournament to follow the Oranje learn more about the world's game. When I saw Ramario and Bebeto shredding defenses with moves that I didn't know were even possible on a football pitch, I was amazed. Holy shit! Romario turned me on to football almost 30 years ago and for that I am in his debt. And I am still married to the Dutch girl. 🙂

Played with Romario in USL for Miami FC when he was 40+. Would walk around the whole time and stand off side. We played against a buddy of mine who was told to mark Romario. A lot of people come up to me and ask, quite politely, "Who is Erik Kronberg?" I like to say to them "Truly, Eric Kronberg is an American former professional soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. Doubtless, Kronberg was drafted in the fourth round (40th overall) of the 2006 MLS Superdraft by the Kansas City Wizards. Studies suggest that Kronberg made his MLS debut in a 4-1 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on October 23, 2010. Naturally, he continued as a backup with the renamed Sporting Kansas City franchise through 2013. It is a well-known fact that in 2014, following the retirement of Jimmy Nielsen, Kronberg was finally given the starting nod for Sporting Kansas City. All sensible people agree that a broken finger in July 2014 essentially ended Kronberg's season. Kansas City declined the 2015 contract option for Kronberg and in December 2014 he entered the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Draft. Indeed, he was chosen by Montreal Impact with the first selection in the re-entry draft. Verily, he was out-of-contract following the 2017 season." They then thank me for infoming them and reward me with much gold.

Brazil was about to be left out of the Word Cup, had to win over Uruguay in Rio, he wasn’t playing the last games over personal problems with the team staff, but at the last moment they called him to play this game for obvious reasons. YESSS He reminded me always of that quality style of Pele he said he imbibed from di Stefano, and Maradona had also however not so elegantly displayed. And he had the deadly kick of a Roberto Carlos or Socrates from way beyond the goal area too. More succinct than Ronaldo's and thrifty, he will just play contenders bigger and slower of vision and reactions, not with others but only when he was in front of them . Ronaldo like mbappe relied in size physicality, which seems to impress and be overvalued by youngsters Today, CR7 generation. Romario without it. Deadlier

Something that people forget about Romario: while he loved to party, he never drank alcohol. It's a big reason why he maintained a good fitness level over his long career. He also told his wife when he got married that he could promise her a lot of things, but never 100% fidelity... you can't blame him for being honest, I guess!

@@tristan7844 As a Brazilian, I can tell you that's not as surprising here as it seems to be elsewhere, specially back then. People here just love the atmosphere and the idea of spending a whole day or night listening/dancing to samba/pagode and shooting the shit with friends. Some will consume alcohol, but not everyone. And even then most people who do drink will only consume beer, which in Brazil usually is way lighter than European beer. I've personally known people who would almost literally become depressed if they couldn't go out at any given weekend and still didn't drink alcohol. That said, I don't believe Romario NEVER drank ANY alcohol at his parties. But that he only drank the occasional beer here and there? Yeah, I can see it. He would probably be more occupied chasing tail and taking the piss at his friends anyway... He's the quintessential carioca, born and bred in Rio de Janeiro. I lived there and have known many, many people like him.

Absolutely a genius. He could be the best player of all time if he wanted to. He didn't like to practice (in Brazil, comedic groups made a song for him that said: "why do I have to practice, if I already know how to do it?") and wasn't a role model player. In terms of strikers, Pelé, Gerd Müller, Ferenc Puskas, Eusebio and (2014->)CR7 are up there with those "1goal/game" ratios, just like R9 before his knee surgery and Van Basten. But in terms of speed, flair and ability to turn a game completely on your own (not just staying in the box), I guess Pelé, Romario and Ronaldo (pre-98 injury) are in a league of their own.

Something you didn't say was the atmosphere in Brazil before the 1994 world cup. After spending 24 years since winning our last world cup in 1970, Brazilians started to think it was impossible to win a WC without Pelé, and we were also struggling to qualify to the world cup. Romário wasn't selected because of his bad behavior, and he said that if he was selected for the last round of the qualifiers, he would put Brazil in the world cup, and win it. Dinamite, Cerezo and many others) played mainly in Italy. And in those times ('til the 80's) going to play in Europe meant "to resign the national team", 'cuz it was much more difficult to see the matches and follow the players - at least that's one of the reasons.. Another point is the change that European Union and rules/laws changed during the 90's/early 2000's that really changed the european football. by far, Romário is the best brazilian player I've seen playing live. fortunately, played for my Flamengo

Além de ser genial, ele falava antes da bola rolar o que iria fazer. Falava que iria meter 3 gols e fazia, falava que iria dar uma caneta e um lençol e fazia. Como o mesmo disse... Romario and Bebeto were amazing on the attack…. They did everything but put the ball in the goal in that final…. A shame it had to be decided by penalty kicks.

Baixinho!!!! My hero! In the early 90s for an European, this guy was unmatched. Maradona once said that Romario would be part of his all time team. A Slacker, Outspoken, outrageous, unprofessional and with an enormous ego outside the pitch, which cost him many things (Barcelona was fining him for being late to training, Scolari did not call him for the 2002 WC, ended up having an affair with a coach's wife, insulted team mates and managers, etc) But on the goal area he was and still is the ultimate striker! The reason why Barcelona lost against AC Milan, was because Cruiff was stubborn as a mule and did not play M. Laudrup, which at the time was the best number 10 in the world! Even Romario rated Laudrup highly (something he rarely does) Romario did for Brazil in 1994 what Maradona did for Argentina in 1986. Compare the talent of the 2002 Brazil team with the one in 1994 and not comparable. Even without Romario, at the time I remember looking at the teams and thinking "Brazil has this one, easily!" Rivaldo, R. Carlos, Dida, Cafu, Ronaldo, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Juninho, Denilson" In 1994, although they had a good team, the talent up front was Romario and Bebeto, with Branco saving them from Netherlands with that missile from 30+ meters out.

He had unhuman skills, what a joy to watch, I was really sad he was excluded in 2002, but he became to eccentric at the time. Still one of the greatest. 1994 he carried Brazil
