"Just Like Heaven" by The Cure (Instrumental Cover)

Yes, folks: sometimes I cover songs by bands other than U2!
My boyfriend requested this one, and it's a fun little number, so I figured I'd give it a shot this weekend. Finding the right synth VST was a challenge, but I stumbled across a great Arp/Solina model by Arturia and tweaked one of default patches to my liking. No drum machine shots, alas, as I didn't play along live with the original album version (the tempo jumps around a bit too much to sync with my DAW, so I programmed the drums from the midi roll up).

I love Steph's covers! Better than the originals in many ways. In case someone complains that her Cure covers are much brighter than the originals, there is a reason for that; Porl Thompson played this on a Gibson ES-175 which is an almost 4" deep hollow-body electric. More to the point, Porl used extremely heavy .016 gauge baritone strings, which means his high e string was closer to the G string if you are playing with standard gauge strings. Steph is playing these songs 100% correct - just the way Porl and Robert play them. It's just that her Epiphone Les Paul has less resonance and is probably strung with a more typical gauge of strings. The synth sound is perfect! And your hands are so fast into those Bm chords. I'm envious. Thank you!

I must’ve listened to every JLH cover out here in Tubeland, and this is the cleanest, most accurate sounding one I’ve ever heard. In Between Days on the horizon? No? Then I’ll listen to your Sunday Bloody Sunday for the 57th time.

Wonderful! First band I was in, 'The Green Hedges' in High School (we were horrendous) we played this as our opener in the 'Battle of the Bands'. I came running on stage from the audience, I think I had a perm, with a wireless microphone and did a tumble onto the stage. People slightly freaked out. This version is fantastic. 'Disintegration' is another Great album of theirs.

I just sat and watched multiple other "covers" play different ways, different fingerings, different strum patterns, picking patterns on bass, bass with fingers, and I turned all of them off within a minute if not the first 10 seconds. Yours is practically fucking perfect, all parts, the whole time. Played basically the same way as the band, the same fingerings, progressions, everything. Brav-fucking-o, I love it.

Recentemente eu li Retalhos (Blankets) e encontrei referência a Just Like Heaven, Craig Thompson não poderia ter escolhido melhor tema para retratar um momento lindo naquela "graphic novel". Parabéns pelo talento. S.V.L. girl, you play a lot! What an acting show. The choice to produce Just Like Haven was a good one, this song is iconic. Recently I read Blankets and found a reference to Just Like Heaven, Craig Thompson could not have chosen a better theme to portray a beautiful moment in that "graphic novel". Thank you! It really just depends on the song; if it’s an involved piece that requires a lot of attention to detail (e.g. complex guitar tone setup, intricate drum patterns, unusual chord phrasings that involve a lot of trial and error and frequent playback of the source material, etc.) it could take many hours of tinkering over the course of a week or more. I also seldom use tabs, so I’m learning the songs by ear and/or watching live performances by the original artists. Relatively simple songs like this one can be learned put together in a few days. I started working on this one three days ago, for instance. The drum track is usually the most time-consuming part of the process.

That’s one of my favourite Cure songs, so I will definitely consider it! Having an issue with my bass at the moment, though, so it will have to wait. I’m worried that the neck might have warped a little during the 4-5 years I had it in storage... Can’t play anything on the D and G strings above the 12th fret, which rules out A Forest. I’m hoping it just needs a minor saddle adjustment and am waiting on a new repair kit, as I lost my old one. If I can’t fix it myself, will have to try to find a luthier who’s still operational during COVID. :(

@@WHCOMEGAWEAPON Thanks! One of the things I love the most about post-punk/new wave is that it just keeps on keeping on. I'm in my 30s, and got swept up in the post-punk revival of the early 2000s. There are folks out there even younger than I am who are keeping this sound alive with original material -- they're the *real* talent. @@StephVanLinden Thank you. I'll go check them out. Modern music has pretty much turned into garage and finding new music like this is like finding hidden treasure. Edit: just listened to them. Lol the Hewson genome is unmistakable.
