You replace whole blood at a MUCH slower rate. What you mean is blood plasma, the liquid part. Blood plasma is almost entirely water, and the rest of its make-up is what takes a week or so to replace.

Whenever I hear about persistence hunting I alway think of the horror movie trope of being steadily and relentlessly chased by a killer, just waiting for you to tired or stumble. That we see that as the hight of terror and something that only exists in fiction… but that is literally persistence hunting. Killers in horror movies use persistence hunting. Humans used persistence hunting. What the viewer sees and experiences is what our prey used to feel when we hunted… Horror movie monsters exist… and they are us…
@robertstoneking7916
@robertstoneking7916 Ай бұрын
That's why we have that type of movie. The fear of going from predator to prey, dying like our own previous meal.
@MrDj232
@MrDj232 Ай бұрын
I usually refer to persistence hunting as killing prey with fear. Pushing an animal so long and so hard with just the threat of being hunted that its heart can't take anymore and gives up.
@francky4477
@francky4477 Ай бұрын
Reminds of that movie... It follows!
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 Ай бұрын
@@MrDj232 Persistence hunting, while used by humans in the past, has been over hyped. It was always just one method used by humans, it was never a primary or sole method of hunting. It was never even particularly common in much of the world. There is good reason for this, persistence hunting does not kill through fear, it kills through exhaustion, specifically heat exhaustion. As a result it is typically only possible in hot, more arid climates, and is not useful in temperate, very humid, or very cold environments as it relies entirely on humans being able to dissipate excess heat more efficiently then their prey. In more humid environments sweating as a method of dissipating heat becomes less effective as it relies on the evaporation of the sweat to cool the body for full efficiency.
@james_mckey

@@alganhar1 IDK, we do sort of still use that trait even today. Sure, we're not persistence HUNTING, but we do run ultra-marathons of 50 miles or more. The "Angeles Crest" run is a 100 mile race that roughly a fifth of the runners complete within 24 hours. There's another race in California that can be run on foot or on horse -- I can't remember what it is called -- and it is long enough that those on foot tend to win. The "Man vs Horse" race in Wales is short enough, at 22 miles, that generally the horses win. In fact, thinking about it now, many of our sports seem to be a re-application of our old hunting methods. Various archery and sharpshooting events, the Olympic Biathlon, Ultramarathons...*shrug* Just my two cents on human endurance hunting.

Well, if no other species they are familiar with are able to regenerate bones, why would they? If losing a half liter of blood is not be survivable, how would a transplant be viable? As fragile as they are, anything we'd classify as "invasive" surgery would be completely off the table. You call it "basic medical concepts" but that's only because that's how OUR bodies work, their bodies don't work that way. You would stand there confused how one of them died of blood loss after only losing a half liter of blood, but to them that would be a "basic medical concept."

Either they don't work or ethical/religious reasons. Also the Captain thought it was a new technical innovation instead of being an ability of humans. But yeah, sometimes authors make the aliens so weak that I wonder how they reached sentience at all. I mean at least a base amount of healing are required for the body to grow and survive. And as is often repeated in those stories .. the only performance category Human are the best on Earth is cheating.
