Absolutely......his performance on Sultans of Swing in Alchemy was epic.....he improvised and drove the song with some fills that even surprised and excited the guys in the band [as is evident from their reactions in the video], it was a stellar performance filled with dynamic, rhythmical highs and supported with subtle, delicate touches where appropriate......in fact all of the songs in Alchemy were superb and Terry's contribution was brilliantly significant

For anyone thinking Alchemy was the peak of Terry’s performance, just think a couple of years later out came the album Brothers in Arms and the rest is history. Terry’s been the best drummer Mark Knopfler’s unique mastery on guitar could ever be accompanied by. Cheers to Terry Williams, the greatness of humbleness🙌🙌👍

@@timwingham8952 I thought he was as he consistently appeared on all of its hit videos (So far away; walk of life; brothers in arms, apart from Money for nothing), but anyway, just that introduction creating musical and drumming tension like no other pop song, would absolutely do for me to admire Terry’s drumming skills forever. A real pity he could not continue in Dire Straits after that album. Sincerely don’t know why. Thanks a lot for your reference 👍

@@fernandojorgerenart2638 Hi. Terry recorded Brothers In Arms with the band, but unfortunately Mark Knopfler decided what Terry had laid down wasn't right. So apart from the huge drum intro on Money For Nothing, all Terry's work was wiped, he was sent home and Knopfler brought in Omar Hakim to re-do all the drum tracks. So what you hear on the album is basically all Omar, no Terry. However, Terry was retained for the live tour and promo videos.

@@timwingham8952 thanks a lot Tim for all that information I wasn’t even aware of. Apparently once more it’s surprising to find out that nothing really is what it seems and it’s good to realize that almost 40 years at least. Better late than never!😆I’ll think of it as a real pity every time I enjoy listening to the Alchemy concert and the intro of Money for nothing, which even the genius of Mark Knopfler couldn’t find any other drummer fit enough to replace Terry🙌🙌🙌

His Sultans of Swing Alchemy live performance is the single greatest drumming performance i've ever seen. Normally, the drum work is mostly there to keep time, and outside of solos, are usually lost in the background. He made himself a standout in a song known for the guitar work. The only other drumming performance i can remember standing out like this was with Santana at Woodstock.

@@TheMusicalElitistGot to be fair though, Pick Withers left DS because they were becoming a hugely successful stadium rock band. It didn’t suit his style and it completely suited Terry’s style which was perfect for the band at that time and I can think of no-one better. From 78-82, DS released 4 albums and 83 to 88, 1 album. Where the more subtle or jazzier feel was needed, they had Omar on the record. For the 2 biggest hits - it’s Terry on drums and he’s an absolute legend 😊

What a beautiful video, great to see Terry, his lovely wife, and especially the late Vivian (Spiv). I was a roadie in the 60’s/70’s with various Swansea bands, Track 29, Liquid Umbrella (Spiv’s band), Billy Maunder Group, and The Eyes of Blue. I also drove Terry & The Dream to London for a gig at a pub in Wood Green, in Dream’s “Commer” van with a column gear change, typical of band’s transport in those days. (Transit vans were not built yet in those days). I remember the van developing a fault on approaching London, and were it not for a garage sorting it out quickly, we would not have done the gig. It’s a correct depiction in the video that Swansea had a great musical scene with many bands going out nightly to all areas of South West Wales & beyond, mostly booked out by promoter Vernie Ley, and after the gigs at midnight (ish) you would see a row of group vans outside the Asian Grille curry house on the Kingsway roundabout. It’s true also what Spiv said about the local bands being superior musically than the nationally acclaimed & Liverpool etc bands of the 60’s,, that’s a fact, but Swansea has always been, and still is, a great place to live, and hence has regularly been know as the “graveyard of ambition” with only a few musicians really going to the top flight with international acclaim e.g. Terry with Dire Straits and John (Pugwash) Weathers (ex Eyes of Blue & Man) with Gentle Giant, but they are all back here now, well those that have not sadly passed on. I followed Terry from early beginnings in The Commonchero’s, The Dream, Man, then the ultimate Dire Straits, plus all his local band work, I actually dossed in the basement in his & Martin Ace’s (+Spiv & Sue’s) home in Hanover Street, Swansea, whilst living away from home. Great memories, and thanks for posting this lovely video.

So many have commented on Terry´s enormous talent. I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform with Dire Straits many times and yes, he is a brilliant drummer. He brought more power and punch to Mark´s songs and guitar work. He was indeed a great contributor to the bands stage success. I want to comment on what a lovely man Terry is and what it is to have the constant support of your family and partner. I am writing on human psychology and the breakdown of communications in families. This is a fine example of what it is for a child to have that support and backing from their family at all times. No illegal activities, no unhealthy activities, no negative elements in their lives and the result is a wonderfully considerate, caring man, who uses his own well known status to the benefit of others. A person who does not need to change his whole life style because he has achieved great success and become a well known musician. I loved his awards on the stairwell, I too would feel like that and my Dire Straits room, well yes, I would feel like that too. They must have been precious years to experience but neither do his family need to be living permanently as if there was nothing other than Dire Straits in the world. Coming from the rough Norfolk coast, I so understand Terry´s love of his home town and it´s coast in winter. Where better to bask in the warm glow of talent, turned to achievement and the pleasure of many millions on the way, than in your favourite place on earth and with those who you most value on earth. That is a real rock star enjoying his success. That is how to be happy!

@@localpm Hi Paul, I am touched indeed that someone somewhere has thought my words have sufficient significance to comment on. As I say, I have turned my hand to writing and am now typing up my second book. I was giving my stiff fingers a rest and just having a casual browse on youtube and it was your title JUST THE DRUMMER IN THE BAND, that made viewing a must because I felt that really it does sum up wonderfully well that JUST anything, Terry Williams is not. It really is so wonderful to see successful people who don´t end up destroying themselves and in the process shaming their families and becoming estranged from them. I have so little support professionally from my close network as to be crying out for support from somewhere. So, it was very refreshing to know of Terry´s family. I so loved his Mum´s laying the dinner table story and their memories of their trip to New York. My first book ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, as you may guess from the title, comes from the heart of an estranged person, as I am really beginning to feel, having now lived thirty years away from the UK. I yearn for my Norfolk and to see Terry sat at the family beach hut and playing with the family and dog on the sands, was shades of the past for me and I so understand his love of what was ever righteous and worthy of loving, it always stayed true to itself and the people too. Whilst my book is in part a biography of my up and down life, human psychology is what I am exploring. Why people act as they do? How we are so affected by other people in our lives and how difficult it is to keep a steady status quo being surrounded by so many uncontrollable circumstances. I started writing during our COVID-19 lockdown and just started letting loose on my frustrations of man-kinds brand of leadership which has now left us all with a new menace in our daily lives, like we needed another one. I try to rebuid the world, starting with my beloved Africa. I had to find a point to close....... 800 pages just wasn´t enough space and so I now continue in ON THE INSIDE LOOKING OUT, which has sadly had the Ukraine conflict as it´s backdrop. All black and white, as I say in this one, they are the only two colours that don´t exist in nature, man-kinds inventions and some of the most contaminating ones. I can´t stop Paul. So much to say and no one wants to listen. It´s all about wavelengths really and which ones you tune in to. Terry mentions the glue sniffing, I can remember that too, young kids from the care homes whose lives just bore no resemblance to those of Terry and I, which were blissful places to be. I, like him, see all the good that could be done, if only someone cared enough to actually do something. You either have to be a volunteer or have your own financing and be your own boss but no good seems to ever be forthcoming from government in all these areas that are screaming out for attention and I talk of this in my book in a chapter titled, THE LOST GENERATIONS. If they hadn´t been lost for guidance before, well, the internet on mobile has filled that vaccum and we now have so many people, young and old, tuning into some very dubious wavelengths. I love to see Terry working with young people through music and artistic expression. I believe that a person needs to have richness inside of them to be rich and wealth is the experience of knowledge lived, which leads to wisdom. The owner of great wealth will ever be a wise person, a wise person will ever be the holder of a wealth of knowledge and understanding, were they only able to apply it???? I thank you for your contact and congratulations for your lovely piece of work and my best wishes to you.

. . . How correct you are in all that you write. As a great mentor of mine once made clear … “ The first seven or eight years - and the wiring is ‘in’. It is possible to re-wire … but it is a lot of work”… Thanks, Gerry Godley, of Falkirk; you also were so correct about kindly solutions to so-much that need not be due to inconsiderate words and actions against young hearts, minds and souls. So much ‘wrong-wiring’ done in a few short but critical years. A l l b e w e l l .

Great drummer, sidelined for Brothers In Arms. One wonders how he felt about that.
