Craig Sekowski I hope not. It’s the reason I don’t have one of these mechanicals even though I like them. They look tiny and toyish on wrists over 6.5, which is many many many people have. Ideally all the watches would be made in multiple sizes, but most don’t. The Automatic in this video can be found in 42mm which is what I have

Recently picked up the Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical watch with date function.. I picked the olive green dial as at times the dial looks black, other times grey, and other times olive green. One of best “value” watch out there. Hard to find a better watch at this price point!

Every video seems to be either a watch I want to own or a watch I already own. My Hamilton khaki field is the quartz 38mm with the matte bead blasted case and hands, same dial as the auto I fell in love with the dial texture and layout, the auto was 50% more expensive and I didn’t have the funds at the time. The durability of the bead blasted finish is fantastic and it only gets better with wear

JustBlueFish Watch Reviews if I had to pick one - it’d be the 2018 mechanical. The auto is beautiful but it feels like it’s trying too hard to be dressier. The date on the older mech is nice, but the new one is a better homage to the old mil spec one. I’m also keeping an eye out for one of those from my birth month/year.

In my opinion the LL Bean (which I believe is from the early 1980's) is the best of these. I prefer its size better. Many watches today are way to big and look clunky. My interest in watches began with old black and white movies from the 1930's on. Frequently in those movies as part of the plot someone looks at their watch, or you see a character just wearing a watch. The style and size never over powers the wrists, giving an understated look with proper proportion. In the 1970's huge tablecloth size ties were in style and looked horrible. Whenever something we wear becomes overs sized it ruins its look. Just my view. not worth a dime.
@nerychristian
@nerychristian 10 ай бұрын
The thing is, most modern watches are a lot more expensive and better finished than their vintage predecessors. When you pay a lot of money for a watch, you want it to be large enough so that it is more visible. I know that when I wear my watches, I like to be able to see the time at a glance. I also buy watches with beautiful dials. So I want to be able to notice all the nice details of the dial. That's harder to do with a smaller watch. When most people wore suits to work, or dressed more nicely on the weekends, it made sense to have smaller watches, so that the watch could fit under a dress shirt. But since we now live in a very casual society, and most people wear tshirts, it makes more sense to have watches with larger dimensions. Most men no longer wear jewelry, so the watch has become the new jewelry, and you want it to be noticed. For me, 38mm-39mm is the sweet spot.

@nerychristian 10 ай бұрын
@@barryfleischer6553 I agree. Even though I prefer watches that are between 38mm and 39mm, I make sure to buy watches that have clean, simple dials, that are not too ostentatious. My favorite watches in my collection are the Seiko SJE089, and the SJE093. Their designs are based on vintage watches. My favorite watches are dress watches that have a classy and timeless look, without too much stuff going on the dial.

@@JustBlueFish Just got mine, love the size but the legibility of the dial is a bit questionable. I am 41 so the markers are a tad harder to see with poor lighting especially with those skinny minute and sub second markers which I think are useless. They should've kept things simpler by getting rid of the sub second markers and making the minute/second markers a little thicker.

I recently bought the automatic 42mm on a strap. It has a lovely winding action, even though it's automatic. My only criticism is the strap length, I find it very short. My wrists aren't excessively large but I can only fasten it on the 3,Rd hole which means that it's actually not long enough to fit in the second loop securely.

I’m glad the pre-2018 version is still available in 2023 (even though Hammy nerfed the movement beat rate to extend the power reserve). That’s the one I went with. Cleaner dial that’s easier to read and the date is handy. Plus, the green is a killer color, even if it’s a less accurate to the original Army issue watches. I love how wafer thin it is! Hamilton’s Accuracy spec is -10 to +15 seconds per day, according to the faq on their website. You’re well within specifications at +11. You also have to keep in mind that sitting it in one position and timing it isn’t the best method. It will keep different time in the wrist, and that’s what matters. Wear it for 5 days and see what it averages per day. If it’s worse than the accuracy in the static position I would maybe have it looked at.

My first thought was those 2 are quite similar. Very nice watches, both of them, and if you’re a Hamilton collector I could see having both. But for more variety the new mechanical model stands on its own a bit better.

I like them all but would go for the auto version. I also usually like getting watches on their bracelets but the gap after the end links really bothers me. I also don’t like that the center links are split down the middle.

Generaly I don`t like only 1 thing in pilots...wich is the arrow indexes. And there comes the automatic Hamilton. Looks much much better in my opinion. I`ve noticed not for the first time...that steel bracelet change the pilots dramaticaly into the whole different watch.

The new 2018 model dial looks like it was patterned after a WWII aviation gauge... and to me it looks like it was done with a Leroy set. Now there's nothing wrong with that... just how it looks to me. It's too bad that you couldn't dig up an original Hamilton Army-issue watch so we could see just how it actually looks. Now, having said that, I would not mind having the new 2018 version, although the Automatic version would be nice as well...

Do you think that watch designers will ever design watches with small diameters like the vintage Hamilton Khaki Field you showed us today? And what is the purpose of a small dial? Or is it just a matter of fashion? I would say that a small watch is more difficult to make than a bigger one. From that perspective it is yet more suprising that they made smaller watches in the old days than they do now. I think that 42 mm watches were hardly available in the fifties, sixties and seventies? Can you tell something about thus development?
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think designers will go back towards the trend of vintage sized smaller watches. At least not anytime soon. Style does change and often times things that went out of style come back in style, but I don’t expect that to happen with watches anytime soon.

The Khaki's bad lume and AR coating (or lack there of) makes the watch so illegible, that it defeats the purpose of being a field watch. Also, I have never seen longer lugs on any watch of this size, ever,. It makes leather straps unwearable, unless you're a fan of huge gaps to show off arm hair.

Thanks for your videos! I enjoy watching your reviews! I have a question regarding the case-back on the H694190, i.e. the pre-2018 Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. I just purchased this watch from Jomashop and noticed that the case back does not look the same as on other KZfaq reviews of the watch. On my case-back, there is no "sapphire crystal" text, neither is there "ETA 2804-2" text. The text on my case-back is similar to the one featured in your video above at 17:20. Is there anything to be concerned about here? The watch seems authentic in all other manners, but I figured I'd ask an expert.

New Hamilton owner. I bought my H69439363 Khacki field in December 2020. On the crown and in the back, the H is the newer, curvier version, not the block H version as you mention. To me, the watch looks like what you are calling the tool watch, the subtle, pre 2018..... It has the date at 3, olive face, canvas/leather strap with metal loops and three metal strap holders. Is my watch considered a modern Khacki or pre 2018? Confused. Thanks. I love it no matter what it is.

And I like the facto that the hands are not fake yellow patina ! But I don’t like the date that much. This is why i am looking for an Hamilton without these yellow hands color, without the date and with that kind of brushed color ! Thanks for your help

The "fauxtina" doesn't bother me much. It isn't as strong as on some other watches (e.g. a Steinhart one, the Ocean Vintage Military if I'm not mistaken). And I also have the brown, "tropical" dial. It has more or less the same versatility as the black dial, it's a rarer colour and I like it a lot.

You can have its water resistance tested to see if it really can go down to 50m. Do that every 12 - 18 months and you should have no problems whatsoever.

Have a look at a thread on Watchuseek about WR. It's called "Sigh... Myth Busting Again". As long as your watch has been checked to be really water resistant, you shouldn't worry about anything, even with a 30m watch.
@user-et8vm9cc3t
@user-et8vm9cc3t 5 жыл бұрын
@@MPD90 Exactly. You get my point. It has nothing to do with the ratings and all to do with whether the seals and gaskets function properly. Yes, your diver's watch will be factory tested, but don't you think it's ridiculous to worry so much about a bit of water ? It says 30m, then it has to be waterproof. I don't care what some overcautious people say, if it says 30m it's either resistant to 30m or the manufacturer is lying. Simple, no ?
@user-et8vm9cc3t
@user-et8vm9cc3t 5 жыл бұрын
@@MPD90 Then why do they rate them to this depth ? Don't you think it would be somewhat dishonest ? And my point was that your seals and the structural integrity of your watch are the elements that guarantee its water resistance. There have been divers failing in the hot tub as well as Timex Ironmen being worn without breaking a sweat on divers' wrists. Have a look at the way your watch is built. Have a look a the caseback, at its crown. This is what allows your watch to be water resistant. Who cares that my Vostok was rated to 2 atm ? It had a threaded crown and a screw down caseback. It worked well and you could swim flawlessly with it.
