Didn't know him until his B-M reaction, but I happened to see him perform at Taylor Hawkins Tribute few days ago. He covered 2 Van Halen songs with Eddie's son Wolfgang. Justin Hawkins did a great job, he is GOOD!! (Wolfgang's guitar was astonishing, almost exactly same as his dad)

The assessment of novelty as a pejorative or a compliment largely depends on the interpretation by the individual subjectively rather than treated objectively. Usually one’s preference is given as saying “Oh it’s just a novelty ,” or “Oh, this is quite novel!” Nothing changed except preference and tone. Is something like Babymetal or Wagakki Band “novelty bands?” Absolutely, because they both play a very distinct and unique thing that more or less no one else is doing. They do that thing and do it almost exclusively. That doesn’t elevate or devalue the merit of the work, it only describes the characteristics. I think it’s also fair to say you can see the merit and quality in one novel work and not see the value or merit in another without being accused of double standards. It’s what the individual prefers. Talking about novelty acts - the ladies who formed the Scottish duo Strawberry Switchblade, donned gothic Lolita outfits - which basically lit the craze in Japan that goes on til today. And it kinda came full circle with the Babymetal ladies making the look catch on with Western media again. Strawberry Switchblade is quite brilliant btw
