Justin Lee’s Struggle as a Gay Man & Devout Christian

“I was absolutely convinced that you could not be gay and a Christian. In my mind, it was like the diagnosis for a disease.”
Justin Lee grew up in a conservative Christian family that taught him being gay was a sin. Eventually, questions about his own sexuality forced him to reconsider everything he thought he knew.
Lee came to terms with being gay but struggled to find a community and no longer felt like he belonged in the church. However, he still held on to his faith.
In college, he organized a dialogue between the evangelical Christian and LGBTQ groups on campus to listen to each other and try to knock down misconceptions they had about one another. When Lee shared his story, he realized that storytelling - and the curiosity that comes with it for the listener - is a powerful tool for bridging divides.
Lee continues to host dialogues like that today and focuses on teaching people to apply the principles of strategic conversation to the political, social, and personal causes they care most about. In 2001, Lee founded the Gay Christian Network (later rebranded to Q Christian Fellowship), which serves lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer, and straight ally Christians. His first book, Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate, has been widely cited for its role in helping Christian parents understand and accept their LGBTQ kids.

I do not struggle with my orientation nor sexuality. I struggled with the hate and judgement, and ignorance of others towards people different than them. God loves you. He is not shocked that you're Queer. He loved you before you were born and still wants to be in your life. Ignore those who'll say love the sinner, hate the sin. It's not a sin to consensually love another person. Youre not hurting God. So dont hurt yourself believing the lies of churches that act like the Pharisees. Remember that those who crucified Christ were keepers of the laws yet they knew not the love of Christ.

God does love and he showed his love to all by giving Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins (Romans 8:3). We are all born sinners, and not one of us is good, and all of us before Christ were under the power of sin (Romans 3:9). God has a Holy standard in which he called us to live according to. Homosexuality is a sin and is mentioned in both the OT and NT. Furthermore, you blatantly sinning and celebrating what God has called sinful is you throwing your fist up to God in rebellion. I find it interesting that you give no scripture to support your comment. There is an absolute and moral standard that God has set before us and though we may never be perfect now we are to strive to live up to the standard God has set before us. Not define our own morality and standard.

@@andreahill6512 I was born a homosexual so take it to God if you have a problem with Her creation. As for Pauline writing or other biblical texts, they do not supersede God. You and other Christians already adapt some laws and precepts to fit current culture and norms but draw a line at others. Therefore, picking and choosing as did Pharisees. There are so many denominations in part because the scriptures, you want quotes from, are interpreted differently. want to debate scriptures? Until you follow all biblical laws as prescribed, keep that rock to yourself, better yet drop it and mind your own. Pharisees, like many Christians today, were keepers of the law yet they did not know the essence of God's love.

The one thing I struggle with beyond comprehension is hate. I have a struggle with hating humanity as a whole. It’s almost debilitating. I would rather struggle with sexual sin (which I have completely overcome with God’s help) than my hatred for people. One of God’s greatest commandment is to love your neighbor. If I don’t love my fellow man, I’m on my way to being estranged from God. May God help me overcome this sin.

@@magei329 1 Cor 13 describes what loving your neighbour should look like. I'd say "love not the world" speaks against systems of oppression and exploitation, values such as greed and arrogance, that are how the world works.

I struggle with same sex attraction. My choice is abstinence. The Scriptures are clear. I’m praying for God to change my desires to be in line with His Will. We must pick up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Christ. It’s not easy, perhaps not really fair, but it is right and good. Thank you, Jesus ❤

From experience we know that God doesn't change who people are attracted to. The scriptures are clear, Rom 13.8-10 proves there's nothing wrong with it. Since God said it's not good to be alone, best thing is to find someone whom God has granted you the capacity to love and build a life together.

@@amberkammer9210 yep, easy way is to go along with the culture, believe that the bible condemns this certain group, and in the end destroy your life. narrow way is to accept how God has made you even if it conflicts with mainstream opinion - happened to Jesus many times - but in the end live an authentic life.

You are to put to death the deeds of the flesh. You are to deny yourself - Not “Accept” yourself and who you are: claiming this is what God made you to be. Under that logic, God made a whole lot of arrogant angry inebriated predisposed assholes and douche bags. Are they just allowed to be that way? By which moral metric standard are we measuring these guidelines? Human understanding or the God Breathed word of God?

I've been in the gay lifestyle for a brief moment of time, but it was long enough to make me realize how depraved I was in my mind to desire sex. I thank God that Jesus Christ has saved me and has been rescuing me from that lifestyle through the renewing of my mind when it comes to the proper use of sex. For people who think they are "born gay", that part is totally irrelevant to your standing before God -- being born in a certain condition DOES NOT give you the license to disobey His commands just because your nature desires it. We are to crucify the desires of the flesh daily and let the Holy Spirit work in our lives to conform us into the image of God's only begotten Son.

Would you say straight couples also shouldn't desire sex? If so, and you embrace this universal call to chastity, what does that say about Paul encouraging those with poor control over their sexual desires to marry? I am gay, and I have found myself in conflict about Christianity because I absolutely feel a drive to believe in Jesus and repent of my sins, but not once has the desire to marry another man even once been counted among my sins in my conscience. It is difficult to wrap my head around arguments against same-sex marriage without also introducing restrictions and conclusions far beyond the scope of same-sex marriage. What stops the approach where sex outside marriage is still sin but same-sex couples have the same access to lifelong covenantal connections as straight couples? It seems to me a point being stuck on primarily out of fear that singular change *must* unravel the rest of the faith, and I have met so many people for whom that is not the case at all.

I agree with you far right members of Christianity. The Bible is most definitely opposed to EVERYTHING regarding LGBTQ+ people. It is also against the rights of females, and most certainly scripturally justified in its calling for the persecution of (especially) male homosexuals. To pretend that this religion is even SLIGHTLY accepting (let alone tolerant) of LGBTQ+ people is to be utterly incapable of comprehending Christian scriptures (both biblical and extra biblical). There is no room for LGBTQ+ people in this religion. I hope this does not offend or upset - it is nonetheless the truth. Leave this horrendous religion behind you. There are SO many other religions that will not abuse you. Try them.

It matters when homosexuality is often compared to drunkenness and adultery, things that a person actively chooses to participate in. Sexuality is not a choice, thus the sin of sleeping with the same sex should not be compared, yet it always is. And the best answers are just, don’t do it, defy what has always been natural. When the Bible says the in Romans the reason why God allowed these people to be sexually perverse, it says that the very reason why was because they didn’t worship God and choose to worship other things. Yet Justin’s story, as well as many other Christian youth, were actively involved in church, worship and believed in God, yet this sin plagued them. And the best the church can do is just love the sinner, hate the sin. Do you now see that discussion is needed rather than just denouncing something? We say to have faith that God will deliver, but when our struggles don’t seem to be properly reflected in the Bible, people wind up more lost than ever blindly following the church, especially when several church goers are committing great sins that the church has turned a blind to.

It stands there - dot and tittle - blatantly, overtly, unapologetically, clearly and unrelentingly. To make excuses for it is foolhardy. Leave Christianity. It should never have been and never should be "us vs them" between any two groups of people, be it straight and gay, Muslim and Christian, etc... Other humans are not ever the enemy. We All feel Stuff that we shouldn't, in The Book of James it says" when tempted You can't say God is tempting You, We are Tempted By our own Lust, and sinful Desires, That Means We must Be willing to Say "NO" and That's not Always easy, But Giving in to it is, which is Why I Believe Jesus said Narrow is The path that leads to Life , and Broad The path too Destruction, I like Women, But I can't go out and Do anything and Everyone I want, I have too keep it in Line with What GOD wants, if I Truly want to Honor GOD , just My Opinion 😊

I think you make a great point. I've struggled with homosexual thoughts and behavior for years but when consider all the sinful behavior outside of sexuality that Christians are commanded to forfeit, homosexuality is just one. Why would I forfeit other sinful behavior but not homosexuality? If we love sin, Hebrews 10 says we're already lost.

I'm single and i'm not married so i'm not having sex I was abused as a kid so my confusion started when I was young I blocked it all out till I was twenty five and everything went haywire. I've been single my whole life. I know one day I'll get married. I'm gonna be forty five next week. You develop a relationship with god this will fill your loneliness Have a good strong community of friends. One day when you're ready that will bring the right person in your life. Being married is not everything I've seen a lot of bad marriages

Justin Lee is an engaging speaker. However, it doesn't matter that gay or same sex attracted people can't change. This life is full of challenges. Jesus never said it would be easy. I know as a same sex attracted man myself that gay relationships will not bring peace.

@@frannynet553 Paul condemned gay sex in Romans 1 and it wasn't just about excess as the revisionists teach. This notion that there are all these loving, committed, monogamous gay couples is false. Gay relationships are an arrangement to try to assuage one's disordered tendency and create a pretense that it is normal and healthy. It doesn't work.

You have been deceived. There are plenty of gay relationships that are healthy. There are LGBT Christian Churches as well which align with all the medical and mental health associations. Exodus International folded for the harm they caused and apologized. That was the largest ex-gay organization.

Honestly, anyone who says, "You're a homosexual? Then you can't be Christian because that's a sin", is directly contradicting themselves, because guess what EVERY Christian is, guess what EVERY godly man and woman is, guess what every human being is. A SINNER. If you cannot be Christian because homosexuality is a sin, then you cannot be a Christian because we all have lived and will live a sinful life until death. Christ died for us sinners, and gave us a gift of Salvation. He gave us a Gift we know we don't deserve because of our sins, but His Love for us is so great, He gave us the Gift of Salvation.

Would highly recommend the KZfaq channel of a man called Becket Cook who identified as gay, now a born again christian. He has interviews with people just like him and wrote a book called Change of Affection. God bless.

If his experience worked for him, fair enough for Cook, but what of the millions of people with different experience for whom that approach fails. God saying "it is not good to be alone" shows that you should not impose loneliness.

@MusicalRaichu it's not only Cook who had this experience. He and others are providing info on how christians should treat lgb members. Their channels are more for christians then anybody. You can't expect everyone to become christian. You can't impose christianity on anyone either. It's a choice and it's God's work anyway. They didn't become what they are because of their work.

@@oldol12 There are many ways people have resolved the conflict between their faith as taught to them and their innate attraction. Some, like Cook, chose to stay single, works for a few but not most. Some tried marrying against their orientation, sometimes works, often fails. Many resolved it by leaving the faith, often unwillingly, because they're honest enough to realize it's the one thing they can change. Many, like the speaker here, discovered that the conflict is due to false teaching based on mistranslation, misinterpretation and misuse of the Bible. Hope this helps clarify the matter.

I'm sorry to hear that you have left your first love, Christ. You were correct how you first felt, that for whatever reason, the bible teaches against homosexuality. I don't think it was a choice for me. I have always felt same sex attracted. However, I must follow what the bible says and resist that temptation. I always think to myself, why can't I have a partner. Why am I supposed to stay single for the rest of my life? I try not to ask myself those questions anymore and that is not the first question I would ask God or Jesus when I would meet them. You can't go on how you feel brother, you have to go by scripture. The scripture is TOTALLY clear. That scripture is the same today as it was when it was written. I hope that you soon return to your first love, Jesus Christ.

"the bible teaches against homoxesuality"!? no it does not. the bible does not even mention it. It was discovered late 19th cent, how is it in the Bible? The scripture is TOTALLY clear that two men or two women in a relationship characterized by love obey ALL God's commands. We have freedom in Christ, enslaved not to the old way of the written code but to the new way of the Spirit. So do not enslave yourself to the written code, let alone a misinterpreted version of it.

Right or wrong is not determined by looking for rules or precedents in the Bible, it's determined by whether it does good or harm, respects or dishonours God, promotes or detracts from the fruit of the Spirit, etc. In any case, the story in Gen 2 justifies the practice of marriage. The same reasoning applies seamlessly to same-secs couples with no contradiction to the text.

@@anaalmeida2651 Have you visited Justin Lee's channel? It's called GeekyJustin. He clearly explains why it is not true that God has condemned loving, committed and monogamous same-sex unions. The reason why I am convinced of this, as a straight person, is because the Bible records God being tolerant and accepting of those who practiced polygamy and owned slaves, even though I consider both of those things to be sinful. Many Christians in Africa still practice polygamy (which is oppressive to women) and persecute gay people at the same time, tragically. Until two hundred years ago, most Bible-believing Christians supported slavery. A gay couple who love each other and are committed in their relationship are far more morally upstanding than someone who owns another human being as property or has multiple spouses. I see no reason why God should condemn you for it.

He grew up in a Christian home accepting the faith. He never suppressed the truth about God, worshiped idols, set aside the natural use of the female (never had it in the first place), got filled with Iust, behaved unseemly, was filled with evil or approved of wrongdoing. Not a single word describes him. God did not "define" marriage. You're thinking that the Bible says men marry women. So what? Doesn't say that men can't marry men. In fact the reasons for marriage in Gen 2 apply equally to gay men with no contradiction to what it says.

It's also states that intent of man's heart is evil from youth. How is it that you can say that he was not filled with lust or evil? We all are were born sinners! Only God is holy and good and has given us standard for us to live by. You can do theological gymnastics all you want, but it does not change the truth about the word of God. After reading Justin Lee’s book, I cannot help myself and recognizing how far this man truly went inside of his mind to protect himself so he doesn’t see that what the Bible says, and what he continually admits to in his book knowing that homosexuality is wrong… telling his story through the lens of that being gay is not a choice and no matter what comes up against him to tell him that his theology is wrong is only answered with …but I know I’m gay… claiming to be so religious and so profound, and calling himself a Christian , can this man realize his whole entire foundation now becomes the foundation of his deception. Trapped inside of his own circular reasoning what must this man do to realize that he’s wrong. Coming up against his foundation of deciding that there is no choice and that I know I’m gay philosophy is protected to death… Like Dr. Michael Brown says Jesus requires all of me no matter what my feelings are to be completely surrendered to Jesus, . But it looks like Mr. Lee put Jesus who died for him on a timer, and since he wasn’t delivered in a certain amount of time he concluded that God made him gay . Trusting in the Lord obviously was not an option. And if it was, it was on the timer. Nowhere in his book until the very end does he mention that trusting in the Lord with his problem is something that he could fall back on or refer to. Dealing with the exact same thing what this man deals with same sex attraction I understand why and how he protects himself so he doesn’t see that he had a choice. .., what a frightful thing it is to consider such a thought. But since the I’m willing to go to my death, so I don’t see that thought in my mind because of the accountability that I would be under is the reason why he is willing to go to his death to protect himself from seeing the deception ..His book is a very good book for any apologist who understands how someone can deceive himself. It should be in every apologist library like it is in mine audio and book. I battles for 25 to 30 years since I was 19 years old in this subject. But even if he had a good childhood versus one that I had that was surrounded with drugs and alcohol and one parent around , does not excuse me from what is written and the word of God. blame shifting is not going to be available to me, nor is being the victim of any circumstance from what the word of God says. . I cry for this man and hopes that one day the simplicity of understanding of what he’s deceived by will be lifted off of him this book is an excellent tool and recognizing demonic activity… being married for over 30 years to a wonderful woman and still am married my wife understands that what I trust him works because she understand my bottle in that I don’t feed it or convince myself that there is no hope because she can see Christ in me

I appreciate the way you feel but your feelings do not define who God made you to be. The Word defines who you are even before you were born knit together in your mothers womb. God never makes a mistake your just born into a Christ rejecting sin sick fallen world. So are you married to the same sex and living exchanging the natural for the unnatural? If you are you are far from what God declares and desires you are to be. You never mention about what God calls homosexuality in the Scriptures. Clearly the Lord says it’s unnatural. God had given you over to the degrading passions of your lost heart even to homosexuality. God made a help mate for the man in the garden because it was not good for man to be alone and He didn’t make another male for his helper He made a woman! But why did God give Justin over when he was actively involved with his church community. Romans talks about giving them over because they worshiped other things and not the creator, but Justin, and many others like him, were active followers and weren’t even looking to satisfy perverse immoral sexuality. It seems that this just springs up, around puberty for many people. But what’s the cause and yes it’s important to question because while we are not owed all answers, if we cannot find the answer, we can wind up with more confusion. Especially since many sins in Leviticus are outdated and not regularly confirmed by modern day churches, and the fact that Jesus’ death was literally to rewrite Gods law, which means that God does change.

Rom 1 does not describe Justin. He didn't "set aside the natural use of the female" because he never had such a use. Nor did he worship idols, burn in desire, act indecently, receive any penalty, got filled with all kinds of evil or approved of wrongdoing. You quoted the most irrelevant passage in the Bible. Justin is not an ancient Roman idolater.

You can ignore the clear teaching of Scripture if you'd like, but not without consequences, and it's not worth it. The genuine Christian life is about the sacrifice of one's will to that of GOD'S. Those who lose this life will gain eternal life. Please, like I said in my original comment, don't trade the eternal for the temporal. This is not just an issue for the homosexual the sexually immoral heterosexual whether it be adultery, fornication or pornography has the same mandate.

But when God himself said "it is not good to be alone", imposing lifelong singleness is in direct contradiction to God's word. Yes, "the genuine Christian life" is sacrificing your will for God's. So what is God's will? We get the same answer from Jesus Mat 22.40, the prophets before him Micah 6.8 and the apostles after Rom 13.8-9, a commitment to others' welfare, doing good and avoiding harm. That is not only necessary, it is sufficient to obey God. Did Jesus say "love God, love others, but no gay love, on these three commands ...?" Think clearly, why would gay love be a sin? What's wrong with it? The Bible doesn't say anything against it.
