It is so interesting that the architects did not understand the roof overhang would need additional support, but the carpenter did. Lucky you had him.
@justineleconte
@justineleconte 4 ай бұрын
To clarify: architects tend to want to hang things, stabilising everything with suspended steel beams. It would have been possible to do the terrace roof like that IF the house structure was modern and not moving over time (old houses do that), and IF there weren’t such high temperatures in summer (which make wooden structures “move” and bend). That’s the challenge with a renovation, as I learnt: there are several ways of doing things, each expert gives you a different solution and then you are the one who must decide with the elements you have (and all the elements you still don’t know about). It’s stretching my logics skills and my research skills 😅

I find that very interesting that they wouldn’t know that/ they didn’t consult you about not wanting exposed metal beams. I am annoyed on your behalf. We are renovating an old wooden farm house and our architect sent all the plans to structural engineers prior to completion. Do they not use structural engineers? We interviewed a lot of architects and there is A LOT of variation in quality of work. One of them was a guy who talked to my husband the entire time. Needless to say he was not hired.

@@justineleconte Thank you for the explanation! I love the fact that you chose the very simple Builder's Solution (you could grow a vine up the support!) rather than the the more complex and expensive Architect's cantilever!

In the US, there is a school in Charleston, SC called the American College of the Building Arts. Many of the professors there are old school craftsmen , generations strong! Plasterers, blacksmiths, sculptors, carpentry, timber framing, architecture. Some of the graduates of the school worked on Notre Dame in Paris, and work all over the world after having been taught by the European masters.

You may not need an interior designer if you have found the right craftsmen for the job. You are a creative person and have spent a lot of time in the house so you probably know very well what you want to do with it (and what you don't want). All you need is a structural engineer to make sure the house doesn't come down if you take out a wall. A good tip for finding craftsmen (or designers): search sites with holiday homes in your area (like 'Gites de France' or 'AirBnB'). Often these showcase renovated farmhouses etc. When you see a renovation you like, contact the owners and ask them who they worked with, I'm sure they will be happy to give you some names. Courage et restez positive!

I'm a designer in Australia, and the builder looks to be doing great work. As for that designer who didn't retract his previous client's details, that is a BIG no-no. Good luck with finding the right designer for your project. My advice, if the building is watertight, don't rush it. Find the right person to work with, and then everything will come together beautifully.

Hi, Justine! I felt your pain. But such a relief to find such a great and creative contractor. My advice would be, when he come over to double-check that everything is waterproofed (and to collect his last check, I assume), to have a big bottle of cognac on hand and a couple of glasses, you sit him down, and you pick his brain. He is your link to a whole network of people who do good work. He may not have worked directly with an interior designer, but he probably knows people who have. If nothing else, he will have plenty of funny stories. Best of luck.

Looks great! The skylights are amazing for us who love more light in a home. However, over here, there is always a risk with skylights leaking. Either around the flashing or the window framing. So keep a watch on them after every rainy season and repair as needed. The exposed wood under your new 'porch' you'll want to investigate exterior 'deck' treatments to keep the wood from breaking down over time like a log in the forest. That place is transforming into a very nice home.

As you know our homes are not very old in Canada. And there is a lot of new development at least where I live. I grew up in a home that was over 100 years old. And that is rare. I was delighted to see you use second hand shingles to repair parts of your roof. Keeping close to the integrity of the home. I’m looking forward to your next step with finding your interior decorator. All the best. Raylene

I have been watching the renovation of Notre-Dame de Paris. With all due respect to that magnificence, your renovation feels equally spiritual. As the renovations to Notre-Dame required faith, together with learned and skilled craftspeople, so do your renovations. As a lover of all things “old,” one of my favorite sayings is “All that is old, is new again.” And that is a beautiful thing. Your house, like Notre-Dame de Paris, is being reborn. I am enjoying both renovational rebirths. Spirit reborn. I am very happy for you, Justine, and I appreciate your sharing with us. 🌅

Wow Justine ! You just bumped up the value of your house incredibly with that extra ceiling height upstairs and the skylights! Although all this is costing you an arm and a leg (and much energy, inconvenience) this investment will pay you back for sure! Roof and weather, it's scary. But that bit is almost over now and your upstairs ateljé is a dream come true! I hope you find the right interior designer. It's important it's the right match. If not do it yourself, I think you're alot more accomplished than you give yourself credit for, having played the contractor alone through all this work! Bravo! 💖

So pleased to see you looking happy and relaxed. And glad your house is taking the shape you want. Interior designers - not a clue why anyone uses them, I know what I like and although my house is not fashionable (basically all my furniture is hand me downs and sustainable - like my kitchen is all made from salvaged wood - no marble in sight - even the worktops are old planks), it gets so many complements from everyone who comes here. I love colour and every room is a different colour and nothing 'matches'. What is important is to design the structure to meet your needs, so where you place power points, radiators, windows, steps is more important than 'what sofa to buy'. I really dislike the corporate good taste interior design style - give me some trashy stuff anyday!

Thank you for this inspiring update. Alas, I do not know a designer in Provence, however, another KZfaq creator does interesting design work for properties with space challenges, especially older properties. Her name is Gemma Wheeler and her KZfaq channel is Gemma Wheeler Architecture. She prepares wonderful 3D designs and explains her detailed analysis regarding use of space. Looking over her work may provide you with an inspiration too! Good luck.

In building my home I visited savage yards and collected various architectural interest...such as stainglass ...used as a divider in hallway ....corner blocks...and i spent thousand on my herring block floor ....with rich stone accent i n tile floor...as you alway say reuse recycle and repurpose ...i know you dont have time but let the process evolve naturally in a timely process as you keep it simple in areas such as your bedroom and office

Salut, Justine! Well done, I'm so happy for the renovation going that well, after the many challenges. Already looking very beautiful. Bon courage for the last steps. May I ask you a favour? It's about the background sound: I listened to your vlog with headphones and the background sound was so overwhelming that I could barely understand you talking. Is there anything you could do? Thanks! 😊🙋🏻‍♀️
