Watch this common loon mother and her six day old chick interact, including piggy back rides, diving, and wing flaps. The haunting loon call can be heard at the end of the video.
I was fortunate to stumble across this common loon nest site and timed the birth of this loon chick perfectly.
Location: Rideau River, Merrrickville, Ontario - Canada
Date: July 3, 2013

My heart rate just dropped ten points I am sure. So peaceful. Until my mid twenties I lived in a cottage up in Ontario on a clean freshwater lake. My favourite past time was canoeing up to the loons ~ or wagering with my brothers where they would pop up again. Nothing captures Canada's wilds like the call of this magnificent bird.

Hey George - Thanks for the kind words. I was extremely happy to spend two mornings with the parents and young chick; both days it hitching a ride. I was back out again yesterday. The chick is now 16 days old. It has tripled in size, started to change colour, and is quite independent from it's parents - diving and swimming a good 100 yards away. They definitely grow up quick! Hope your summer has been a great one so far my friend... Cheers, Justin

You are so lucky to have common loons (great northern divers) during summer looking and sounding like that. Here in England I'm lucky if I see one or two each year and even then they are either in winter plumage or juveniles, which are so different they could almost be different birds. Thanks for the video, maybe one year I'll get to see one like this.

Duck bodies and genitalia are adapted to a life of vicious gang rape. The male usually doesn't even help with the eggs. That said, I did have one regular mallard couple come around for food for three years in a row.

Hi Yvonne! Doing well here and hope the same for you. Bit early for our loons still. Some of our lakes and rivers still have ice on them, and it is about a month away from me getting the boat out and doing any searching. Early May is when I start actively checking the nest sites, and I definitely will be shooting more footage then and later in the summer when (hopefully) some chicks are born. Weather has been quite spring like here the last week or so, but saying that, they are forecasting 5-10 CM's of snow for Thursday, so still a bit of winter left!! lol

@JustinHoffman
@JustinHoffman Жыл бұрын
I actually didn't. This was my first time filming loons (this video is quite old) and I didn't yet know the behaviours of loons. So, titling it 'mother' was incorrect (or possibly) as both parents take part in the rearing and piggy back rides and are indistinguishable to the naked eye.

@JustinHoffman
@JustinHoffman 9 жыл бұрын
Seriusa1 For some reason, most of the loons of this stretch of river the last two years only had one chick. Unfortunately, this same pair that I filmed nested once again this spring in the same spot. She was sitting on two eggs. I found the nest abandoned, with no eggs, less than a week before they were to hatch. Predation I would assume. Hopefully they nest again - and successfully - in the same spot again next season.
