"...for one of these asserted that he would rise suddenly from the imperial throne...and the head of Justinian would disappear suddenly, but the rest of his body seemed to keep making these same long circuits..."
Here we have a Halloween special for you - Procopius' Secret History, which portrays the then Emperor Justinian as not only cruel and incompetent but actually possessed by demons.
Rediscovered centuries after its writing in the Vatican Library, it was finally published in 1623. Possibly the result of Procopius' disillusionment or even as a type of insurance to be released if anything were to happen to him, it covers the same period of Byzantine history as his History of the Wars; featuring all the same players but completely different in tone.
How do we actually know about history? Voices of the Past is a channel dedicated to recreating the original accounts from the people who lived through events, or who lived far closer to them than we do today. We do this word for word, with an accompanying soundtrack of rousing music and images.

Well, it is interesting, because this very same author's (Procopius) history on Justinian heaps praise upon him and calls him one of the greatest Emperors ever. The Secret History was something he probably wrote in private and only shared with close friends. It makes you wonder which one of them is true, or if they're both complete bullshit (one being propaganda and the other being slander).

@@CollinBuckman Sure, but you'd have to assume it isn't all complete bullshit. After all, why would Procopius write such a document if he didn't have any genuine negative thoughts about Justinian privately? The demonic shit is obviously short hand or poetic exaggeration, but it does make one question his official works which claim that Justinian was the greatest Emperor ever.

The Secret History is just the weirdest thing. if you dont know Precopious was a member of Justinian's court and wrote the most reliable account of his reign. then a few hundred years later in the Vatican library some church scholars find the secret history literally hidden away. the secret history itself never actually claims to be written by Precopious but it makes reference to its authors other works, and we know Precopious wrote those other works.

@John Titor Pretty much all of Justinian's conquests lasted at least 100 years. True, three years after his death the Lombards invaded Italy, but they only took around half of the Peninsula, and the Eastern Romans still held onto most of the important cities such as Ravenna, Venice, Naples, and Rome, and they would maintain some form of presence there until the Normans came in 500 years later. North Africa proved to be a staunchly loyal province of the Empire, holding out during the great Persian War at the beginning of the 600s while Egypt and the Levant fell. Also, when the Arab Conquests began, the Levant and Egypt once again fell quickly to the invaders, but it would take them another 50 years to take and conquer Carthage, and had Justinian II better managed the Empire after Constantine IV left it in a good spot then the Exarchate of Africa may have been able to have been retained for centuries more. Not to mention that most of the problems that had arisen during Justinian's reign had been resolved by the end of Maurice's, less than half a century after Justinian's death. It was the overthrow of Maurice and the Byzantine-Sasanian War of 602-628 that really doomed the Empire, at least for the next 100 years until Leo III's reign.

He promised that he would build a great defensive fortification around his kingdom to protect it from barbarians, and that he would drain the great swamp to turn into farmland for his loving people. It is said that their king so disliked his predecessor that he had courtesans micturate on the former king's bed. It is also said in whispers that he lays with his daughter for no woman in all the kingdom could be as perfect as she that came from his own loins. He has himself been heard to say that he carries women around by their pudenda but he is also known to have the hands of a very small child. @@cgavin1 The Byzantine Emperors had a lot of pressure on them, both from the public and the aristocracy. They had to give the people "bread and circuses", as their Western counterparts did, while navigating complex palace intrigue and nonstop factions. You need only briefly look at Byzantine history to see how many Emperors were murdered, banished, overthrown in coups, blinded, or otherwise mutilated and exiled. Justinian certainly had a lot on his plate and some heavy expectations to stand at the top. It could have fueled his jealousy, or indeed some of the negative portrayals of him given by Procopius or John of Ephesus.

I believe he wrote it (fyi so do historians). I believe for the most part he is speaking truthfully about the corruption and disgusting amount of political intrigue. Obviously, the demon/devil stuff isn't real. So why would he include it? That's the real question that I'd reccommend you'd try to figure out the answer to. I myself think he was added it as a parallel to critizise them both for the monstrous things he claims they did. He didn't necessarily make these up though, he may have believed them himself even. To his account in the secret history ( which he just called Unpublished Writings ) all the annecdotes of Justinian being a demon come from sources of people he knew to be faithful good men. Some of which didn't have a dislike to Justinian even. I'm just throwing my hat in the ring here. I'm no expert

THANK YOU!! This is my favorite part of Procopius' history, and demonstrates just what kind of "historian" he was! It also answers to those modern revisionists who deny that there was a "fall" of Rome, or that the Byzantines were somehow "lesser" than Rome at its height. To which I say, compare Procopius' depictions of Justinian and Theodora wandering about the palace sans heads with Tacitus' depictions of the Julio Claudians. Tacitus is like reading an account written by a thoroughly modern, well educated man. Procopius sounds like either an insane lunatic, or someone so superstitious that you simply cannot believe much of what they relate. Such was the legacy of the intellectual effects of economic and cultural collapse, and even that of Christianity.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsuYdtGQmNHdp2g.html In his book, he doesn't claim to have witnessed these invidents first hand. But considering how there's a moral decay + sexual degeneracy + corruption, Procopius didn't rule them out. An ex-child prostitute turns into actress+escort turn into empress....what? So much for the Romans to be proud of...

Yea, they considered themselves as Romans. However I do think that the Roman Empire was dead spiritually. If you've read secret history you'd know Justinian was incrediably vain about his legacy as emperor and that's the reason he made invading and taking back Rome a goal. But there's no doubt; he could never have restored the Roman empire.
