What a beautiful video! I love deep winter backpacking. We don't get those amounts of snow or those kinds of low temps where I live, but even a couple inches of snow can make for a fun trip!

Fantastic video, Justin! Congrats on the beautiful trip, and all of your effort to film and edit it so nicely, as well as all of the useful advice. This is the sort of trip that I used to love doing, but haven't in a few years. A side note about your Rab Mythic Ultra down jacket - I bought the same one a few months ago, and tore a rip in the sleeve in the first minute I put it on. While it's a marvel of design and materials, that 10D fabric is so delicate, that I realized that I'd never wear it in the wilds again without a shell over it. I sold it and replaced with a Rab Neutrino instead, even though it's not box-baffled like the Mythic, but much more durable.

I think it’d be great to see your recovery after a trip like this and how that differs from say a summer hike. I’d imagine the days and maybe even weeks would be a bit of a struggle and it’d be good to watch to see how you deal with it.

Great series! Ever try Mesh / Fishnet baselayers? Manages moisture real well in cold temps. Seems to be the standard with Scandinavian XC skiers and military, but for some reason has not taken off outside of Scandinavia. Brynje is a good one...

Great trip Justin! Mythic Ultra puffy is my favorite of many jackets I own, warmth to weight ratio is unreal, I call it “my cloud jacket” it’s so lofty lol. On the other hand, I am now doubtful whether to invest in Tensor pad, not a big fan of Thermarest crinkles but…

Awesome trip!! Have you ever considerd using a rulk? A rucksack pulk or packpulk that is. It’s basically a backpack with a pulk strapped on it. You would have some type of a light towing belt on you and a rope based towing rig. When you’re going on flats you just drop your backpack down and just keep going and your backpack just glides along. There was some post on backpacking light by some Swedish guy that used that kind of a system skiing in Sarek national park in Sweden and he said that sometimes it felt even to easy😅. He had a few versions of this ”incredible rulk” and I think the best version was a paris pulk that was cut to length of his backpack. Weird looks guranteed😂

Great video. Next time you should consider cross-country skis. Look at the Rotefella Xplore binding. You would be able to do the flat parts way faster, and put on half-skins for the climbs

Interested in how you like the liquid stove. Definitely the way when it’s really cold, but I’ve used isopro down to about -25, but closer to sea level. Would love the winter review on that!

My Nemo summer pad is a lot comfier than my Thermarest summer and winter pads, but I think I'd agree with you that it's not worth faffing about with unreliable gear when you're in demanding conditions as-is. Glad I don't need to start saving up for a new plush winter pad :D

Route finding in snow without GPS is not easy, even when following a road, or a well-established route. GPS is a lifesaver.

Hey Justin. Just a small note: cold doesn’t come up from the ground, your heat goes away (down /towards) area with less heat (i.e the cold ground). The role of the pad is to slow that transfer of heat maintaining the gradient of heat over the pad thickness. If successful, your skin temperature remains a comfortable 30degC while you sleep with a core temperature of 36-36.5 degrees. I’ve been enjoying your videos.

about your sleeping bag: I noticed the zipper does not go the full length, plus its centered on the top. In the event that your feet should be getting too warm, could you ventilate the footbox somehow? Reason asking is that I am inclined to purchase it.

It's been my go-to winter shell system for years now. I just replaced my original set. Ascentshell is one of the best "breathable" membranes I have used (up there with Neoshell). It does a better job than a lot of other shells I have used, to the point I wear the shell system for the up and down when ski touring (most people take their shell off).

Epic trip, Justin! In retrospect I’m curious if you have regrets about choosing skis over snowshoes for this trip. I imagine there are pros and cons to each. Skis would be worth it for the downhill spots, but I imagine they are much heavier than most snowshoes so the sloggier cross-country/uphill trail-breaking sections would be tougher than if wearing good light snowshoes. Would you take the skis again?

Skis are better in 99% of use cases in my experience. Faster uphill and downhill and better float.

Give the Exped Ultra 7r another chance but use the normal rectangular version instead of the mummy shaped one you tested since it has down insulation in all the chambers.. best pad ever;)

I've been wondering what the advantage of a Garmin watch over an iPhone is for route finding? The iPhone screen is much larger, and it seems hard to get lost when using Gaia/Onx, etc. Is it just the ease of access?

When there is no defined trail to follow, it helps to be able to quickly look down often. You'd have to travel with your phone in your and it would kill the battery super quick.
