RIP Jet Black the legendary drummer and founding member of the Stranglers who died a few days ago (6 December 2022). The video and song is about travelling the opium route to get heroin (never a frown with golden brown). Peaches and No More Hero's are definitely songs to move on to by the Stranglers.

Your reaction kind of mirrored that of how most of us felt when we first heard it... It's different from other Stranglers' tunes, but, like you, we strangely found ourselves smiling throughout it. As some others have mentioned 1. The song is about both a woman and heroin at the same time--a sort of pick your own adventure type of thing. 2. Hit up any song whose title sounds like fun to you off of Rattus Norvegicus by the Stranglers. There's honestly not a bad track on the album (I'm partial to Peaches or Down in the Sewer), but be aware, it's very different music. 3. The last line to Golden Brown, that they sing over and over, is "never a frown with golden brown."

The main body of the song is in 6/8 time and is pitched halfway between the keys of E minor and E-flat minor. The instrumental introduction, in (a very flat) B minor, alternates bars in 6/8 and 7/8 (though sometimes transcribed as three 3/4 bars and a 4/4 bar).
@upthesock1

Thanks for that, I’ve always assumed it was three 3/4 bars and a 4/4, alternating 6/8 and 7/8 is far more interesting.

Some of the band were reluctant to release this as a single but it actually saved them , a pub rock band who were hated by the media, releasing a waltz about Heroin and claiming it was about one of Hugh's girlfriends? Only in the early 80's.

The stranglers are brilliant and their old chum Keith Floyd, the most brilliantly irreverent and eccentric TV cook of all time used their music as the intro, outro and incidental tunes in his shows where he taught all us gastronaughts how to cook amazing food while totally inebriated and always immaculately dressed in a 3 piece suit with a bow tie - it’s Waltzinblack, viva vlad and peaches you nee to listen to dear boy
