Kind of a shame they didn't put some lume on that compass marker, at least you'd be able to get a rough guess of the time in lower light. Very interesting design though!

I learned at university that maps are nation-centric. A flat world map bought in Japan will have Japan in the center. Nothing wrong with that. However, they've excluded the USA. Not interested.

It’s unfortunately out of my price range but I really like this watch. My tastes are normally pretty traditional but I also like to buck that trend with an ultra modern piece from time to time and something like this does that perfectly. I love the thinking behind getting the minute wheel to rotate so it’s actually a readable one hander and the topographical detail on the globe is amazing. If my watch budget was bigger I’d totally have one of these.

I’ve got to say…. I really like this watch! It’s fairly easy to see the time and the design is very unique. I know it’s pricey but it’s not cheap to build and there’s not that many of them so it depends on what you’re looking for. Horses for courses. Would I buy one? No. But I’d like someone I know to buy one so I can see it in the flesh! Great review as always and I hope all is well with the family and that you’re all sleeping ok

Personally I feel the 2020's are going to go down in history as the "Great Chinese Awakening". It's nice to see some originality out of them. Hopefully they do a better job being the dominant superpower in the world than we (America) did. We kinda lost our minds (and our hearts). Let's all come back to this video in 10 years.

I always respect a watch that tries to do something different. There are enough mad people with enough money to sell these for sure. I'd be looking for a second hand one in a few months or wait and see if the price comes down. The domed crystal on the back is absolutely ridiculous though, what is the point of that?

Let’s be honest most people don’t wear watches today just for the time. It’s stunning but at that price it’s unobtainable for most people. That’s sad since it’s quite beautiful and unique. I came to the same conclusion in my review as well Jody. These really are more art than watch. You can read the time, as long as you have good lighting conditions. But that's not really what this watch is all about. They do wear surprisingly well given the dimensions as well. Although I didn't know the price the would be asking for them when I did my review. I was expecting something more around the $500 mark.

Entertaining review, although I would point out that the watch focuses on the Indian Ocean, not the Pacific, and the absence of any representation of the Americas would probably limit its popularity here in the U.S. Now, can you do the WorldWatch V7 from Yes Watch for your next unusual one?

Yes, I was going to observe that it was the Indian Ocean rather than the Pacific. Also it was hard to actually work out where the map was at all, with the initial projection being 90 degrees off. Fascinating watch though. They need alternative maps to appeal to other regions I think.

It’s a shame they didn’t use larger numbers for the hour ring, and put a bit of red on the compass dial, that would of help the legibility? Also the world carving on the omega world timer is the best I have seen, the detail is amazing. I won’t be buying one of these, too much money for the internal movement.

Great vid as always Jody! As to the watch, well, it's a nice "exercise" in creating something different and re-engineering but like you stated, this is not a piece you buy for actual time telling. I used to like watches like that, like Chronoswiss and their Regulateur, or any watches with unique complications. However, these watches are more of a talking point or niche, not practical for everyday use. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Idea! Rather than a rotating semi dome, which is certainly eye catching, you employed a hi-tech dome that is fixed in place but displays as rotating. The surface is embedded with millions of addressable magnetic actuators. Controlled by a master map of the earth, you can display the Earth in any manner that a creative watch designer imagines. The actuators are physical bumps that rise up to create a true 3D surface. The actuators ate on/off devices but you can have dozens of height choices such as in mountainous areas. Color can be introduced by unlying a layer of micro LEDS of extremely efficient low power. The Earths axis can be anywhere, center, top. You can go all the way and have a dome on the bottom. So both hemispheres can be better displayed. Put in Bluetooth and you can download flight data from Flightaware and follow a flight. Just an idea.
@distar97
@distar97 2 жыл бұрын
I should add that the various tech I describe is all mature and employed by today’s engineering designers and manufacturers. The one issue that needs attention is how to lay down the micro elements on a curved surface. It would still be cool on a flat surface but rounded is the goal.

I am a fan of Chinese watches. They still use a Myota or ETA movement at an affordable price. A time piece should be easy to read the time at a glance. Best watches are black hands on a white face. Then the dress style factor with colour and designs are a big factor with what to wear as a fashion statement. Then there are these 'Interesting engineering' conversation piece you wear to a party and ask people what time it is. I get a lot of comments on my 3 lighted column display. I can see what time it is as the numbers beside the column gets a lighted bar and by far the most interest. This watch is intriguing and people would also try to figure out how it works. But also would sit in my watch box for moths before getting used again at a social gathering which has been rare lately.

You fancy selling yours Jody? Fellow Scottish collector here; on the fence about ordering for 2 reasons - that cost (including the tax added on top of $1000), and that unknown movement; who knows how easy it will be to service? I find it interesting every review I've watched skirts around or avoids the movement in any detail; something watch geeks normally fawn over and if anything sometimes pay too much attention to.

Hey Campbell! As far as I could tell, it was a eta2824 clone, but re-geared by CIGA. In theory, any decent watchmaker should therefore be able to service it, assuming they were armed with the knowledge re the gearing. If it breaks though and needs replaced, ummmmm.... could get tricky!

I think we would miss the point if we concentrate on how the watch looks. By applying creativity and engineering, the company created a new movement that tells time in a very unconventional way. Look at the Freak Collection from Ulysse Nardin, it's not for everyone, but you can't help but to appreciate the engineering that went in to build such unconventional time piece. I see some of that in this watch.

Some of the awards don't make sense - but then look at the Tudor BB Chronograph... its a complete design mess. A diver, with a tachymeter, and a diver hour hand that obstructs the sub-dials. It won two industry awards the previous year, and watch collectors fawned over it as soon as they brought out one that looked barely anything remotely close to a Rolex Daytona colour scheme. With the Ciga Blue Planet, at least they were rewarding innovation - this is both a well-crafted dial and case with neat features, and one of the best 1-hand movement solutions I've seen from many, many attempts. The craftmanship in it is pretty good, I think something you may expect from a mid-range company like maybe Mont Blanc or Bell & Ross perhaps. Then you find out it's Chinese, and that's surprising as it seems to punch well above expectations in that context.

$1200 USD Huh? In the last year or so for about that price I've bought a Cigadesign Z Series in Titanium, Xeric Halograph Chrono, Atowak Ettore Drift and a Biotic Formicidae. 4 gorgeous and fascinating watches all of them with a 'gimmick' yet all of them legible and readable and thus functional. The time reading gimmick on this Blue Planet isn't cool, it's just kind of difficult. 5 years ago $1200 would've made this a bargain, but the Microbrand market is so strong now and offers such good value that even $1200 starts to look a little pricey. If it's a choice between those 4 and this it's not even a competition in my mind, those 4, easy.

I don't think the steak is color matched at all especially when you see it in person as opposed to on camera. The strap feels excellent but the dull dusty blue is just not in a good look. It does look great in some other straps though. Just wish the strap that came with it was a bright blue like the dial/hand.

It's really too bad they didn't do a shot from the equator or the north pole. It seems like it might sell a bit better that way.

My thoughts too. You would still get a nice amount of blue ocean and all of China which is where the market is. I'm guessing it's just an artistic choice, it does look cool and I'm pretty happy it shows Tasmania.

Now that they have that movement in production, the sky's the limit in terms of what they can do with it. Perhaps a watch a little more conventionally designed that would be easier to read but with the same novelty. Side note -- I get super annoyed by brands that want to charge anything north of about $700 USD with less than stellar anti-reflective coating. I've purchased aftermarket crystals. The price difference in production is negligible when wrapped into the full cost.
