I swear in this Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña have some of the most realistic and deeply felt chemistry I've seen in recent films. David Ayer knew what he was doing with this one, man. Way better than a film like this has any right to be.

@@martin1234512345, a large number of people don’t make it to 4 years because some of them have a hard time getting used to all aspects of the job, some of the people have a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that we simply can’t save everyone, and some people leave because of the physical demands that the job requires. I definitely agree that the job isn’t for everyone, and I’m certainly not trying to say that the people that can’t, or won’t, do the job are somehow “lesser” than those of us that do the job longer, I’m just saying that it’s a very difficult job to do.

As a retired police officer the reality of a 10-78 or 10-0 call response time can depend on several factors. How large the police force is or not knowing the last location of the officers. Today it’s easier because all police cars and police radios have GPS. Unfortunately I’ve been to several funerals like this and they stay with you long after you retire.
@OllieBlazin
@OllieBlazin 4 ай бұрын
Uncle of mine works LAPD Hollywood division First thing, the 4 symbol that Jake was throwing up means all clear, or safe. And he also said the response time was unrealistic. To quote him; “The moment we get the call, everyone and their grandmas drop everything and head over. Takes maybe 30 seconds to a minute.”
@derricksevernak1540
@derricksevernak1540 4 ай бұрын
@@OllieBlazin He’s correct. It’s called a Code 4. Hence the 4 fingers. He’s also correct that all officers will respond to an officer down. Even other jurisdictions will respond to the call as well. As far as the movie yes it’s a little bit unrealistic. But I’ve been on duty twice in my career when an officer down call made its way over the radio and on one of those calls we couldn’t locate the officer because he had ran so far from where his last call was and there was no updated location. It happens. This was 1999 so things were different then as far as communications. Respect and love to your Uncle!

One of the most genuine cop movies ever made. This is a reality for a lot of members of law enforcement in America (particularly in troubled areas) There is a lot of stigma around American police, but when I tell you, it’s literally just a few bad apples that ruin the reputation of the many.

Errr, this movie is seriously exaggerated. That's like saying "Assault on Precinct 13" captures what it's like to be a cop. It's definitely a dangerous job, and there are occasional gunfights, but the idea that a drug cartel is going to go to war with a U.S. metropolitan police force like this is, for now, ridiculous. This sort of carnage isn't even in the cartel's best interest. Ambushing and murdering two officers like this would trigger a heavy city, state and federal response. It simply wouldn't be worth it.

Err clearly you weren't paying attention. It absolutely was not the carteI that "went to war" with the police. If you had actually been paying attention instead of whining about realism in a movie, you would have noticed that Zavala and Taylor were basically unknowingly moving in on the carteI's activity, which is why they were now on their radar. They had a definite motive to want to take them out. The reason I say it wasn't the carteI is because they actually hired that street gang to do the work for them, because as you said, they don't want that heat. Pay attention to the conversation they have during that scene with the green footage when the guy tells them "not to make a mess".

Me, born and raised in Los Angeles, specifically raised in the Pico-Union District, this movie depicts the dark gloomy reality of life in Urban Inner City life in the 80's and 90's, it really was like this, it still kinda is, if you like this movie then you DEFINITELY gotta check out Street Kings with Keanu Reeves, it's another Los Angeles Cop movie similar to this one!

i used to work in prison. i remember in training, we watched videos of the worst case scenarios that really happened. there's an incident with a mentally ill man that just snapped and attacked one of the COs so brutally, just beating then stomping on his head till you can see the plasma from his brain leak out of his ear. his partner was so shocked and scared, she froze on the spot. the guy survived, but obviously retired after that. the female CO stayed for a few more years but since then, no one wants to ever work with her.

This is my favorite movie. Jake Gyllenhaal & Michael Peña were great. The scene with the babies duct taped was brutal. The crackheads were planning on doing something evil. Sometimes ppl don't understand what cops see on a regular day. Great cop movie. Great cast.

I used to work in Children Services at a Superior Court in SoCal. I've seen worse done to kids, unfortunately. You have to have thick skin and get over PTSD to work in that field. I love how in the end of this movie, you are dealing with heavy stuff like the officer's death, but then they cut to the scene of them shooting the s from earlier that day. Once you see and experience tough things, you learn to get over things very quickly and try to focus on the light and have a sense of humor. You try to remember good people you know. I used to be a very emotional person, but I can handle anything now. I think you would love the show Southland. I used to date a guy in South Central. He was hard of hearing, so he could live anywhere. It was too loud for me to live there, but I never minded going over there. People are super friendly there. Neighbors talk to each other. I personally liked it. And it was during covid so not as many people on the streets (so I probably would like it less now). Gas was cheaper there than other parts of LA, anyhow too. And better seasoned and cheaper food too. Best chicken around... mmm. I've never been a Officer or Deputy, but my favorite show about Cities or the PD is Southland. It's very realistic to me. I used to work in Downtown LA for the City. I love that show. Acting is amazing too. Finding a good partner and having great communication skills makes life all worth while. Once you have someone that you trust and that has your back, you have everything.

Thank you for such an honest reaction. Wife of retired FF here. His department just lost a soul last week in a line of duty death. Many others including the man who recently saved my husband during a medical emergency are in severe condition and our friend is in the burn unit in DC. these movies are very hard for me to watch.... Side note. In most areas police arrive before Fire and Rescue because there have been instances where the fireman or paramedics are attacked and the originalcall is a trap. PD will almost always be first on the scene on every emergency....

This is one of the greatest and accurate cop movies of all time. They were so convincing that other Las Angelas cops gave them the two finger piece symbol which is common for cops to give each other in passing. They thought that Jake was a real cop.

One of my buddies from my last military unit is a US cop and he says they venerate this movie. Gyllenhaal supposedly did ride-alongs with actual cops to get into the character. I think they did an expert job at story telling. A very rare and indeed underrated movie.

gyllenhaal is in so many great films, he picks them as well as tom cruise, and emts and cops who basically walk around with targets on their backs these day and the people that have to operate and even clean up after murders and deaths..they NEVER get enough recognition, I mean there should be a month dedicated to these people

My best friends brother is a cop, and I worry about him every day. He once showed bodycam footage of him chasing down an armed robbery suspect, and then, hours later, he's eating dinner with my best friend, and I'm like how the hell do you do this all day every day and not lose it. All that you see and do. This movie really puts that in perspective that these men and women are living two lives and are always on the verge of life and death. Ash is right, in my city, there have been some very good cops killed on basic traffic stops---tail light out, and they get shot to death over that. There are some awful cops out there, that should be dealt with and taken out of the job, but majority are like these two--just doing their duty and trying to protect people, and for that, they will always have my utmost respect.

Served 9:32 over 18+ years in Law Enforcement and as a Detective. Have been shot at, stabbed several times. Got hurt in a 10-31 in a roll over crash during a pursuit in 2012. It ended my career. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and woke up with amnesia. Took several months to recover. Ended up with broken ribs and a TBI. After six months of therapy...i got served divorce papers and couldn't return home. Then she cleaned out the condo. I was finally told simce i was injured and could not perform tasks i could ride a desk or take early retirement. I took retirement. It sucked. Do i miss it every day, of course i do. The job is a calling .
