Driving Downtown - Montgomery Alabama USA - Season 1 Episode 9.
Starting Point: Commerce St goo.gl/maps/YwutjEncNq12
Montgomery is the capital of the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Montgomery County. Named for Richard Montgomery, it is located on the Alabama River, in the Gulf Coastal Plain. As of the 2010 Census, Montgomery had a population of 205,764. It is the second-largest city in Alabama, after Birmingham, and the 103rd largest in the United States. The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area had a 2010 estimated population of 374,536. It is the fourth-largest in the state and 136th among United States metropolitan areas.
The city was incorporated in 1819, as a merger of two towns situated along the Alabama River. It became the state capital in 1846, representing the shift of power to the south-central area with the growth of cotton as a commodity crop of the Black Belt and Mobile's rise as a mercantile port. In February 1861, Montgomery was selected as the first capital of the Confederate States of America, until the seat of government moved to Richmond, Virginia, in May of that year. During the mid-20th century, Montgomery was a major site of events in the African-American Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches.
In addition to housing many Alabama government agencies, Montgomery has a large military presence due to Maxwell Air Force Base; public universities Alabama State University, Troy University (Montgomery campus), and Auburn University at Montgomery; private colleges/universities Faulkner University and Huntingdon College; high-tech manufacturing, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama; and cultural attractions such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
Two ships of the United States Navy have been named after the city, including USS Montgomery (LCS-8).
Montgomery has won several national awards including being voted Best Historic City by USA Today, being named an All-America City in 2014 by the National Civic League, being named a "Top City For Job Growth" in 2014 by ziprecruiter.com, and being named the happiest city in Alabama. Montgomery has also been recognized nationally for its successful, and ongoing downtown revitalization and new urbanism projects with Montgomery having been one of the first cities in the nation to implement Smart Code Zoning.

this was a very nice video but does montgomery have any healthy food stores you can eat at? i love southern food but as a treat not a staple. how about fitness gyms and areas like paths you can walk on? how about video game shops? i think most people like video games and that would be around but i never see such (especially mom and pop) stores shown in alabama state videos. i am from brooklyn new york btw.

the weather is crazy. when it rains it can do some hailing where the ice so big if feel like it's busting out your windshield. The thundering is vicious sound like it's coming through your living room ceiling and the lightening is flashy. Summers is so hot the heat sticks to you along with mosquitoes, June bugs and flying cockroaches. the sun can be out beaming one second the next it's raining like cats and dogs. The fall and spring is very nice and colorful.

Nice video. Thanks for posting it. Every place has its problems. It is a nice looking downtown. Reading the comments regarding crime in the Southeast below brings a few thoughts to mind. People like their guns down South. They're not afraid to use them. You can get way more house for your money in the South with acreage to boot. No place is perfect, but don't knock it until you've visited or lived there.

As Governor, George Wallace served at the statehouse in Montgomery, Alabama, in the 1960s before he died. He always discriminated against and segregated black people.

"Always" is a long time. After Wallace was shot, he ran for governor again and was re-elected with massive black support. Apparently the "segregated black people" didn't buy what the woke media was saying.

You passed the Dexter Ave Baptist church at the last light before the Capital. Dr King was the pastor there when I was a boy. I remember the day that Miss Rosa refused to give up her seat on the bus. My mother took the bus to work, so the bus boycott really caused a problem for her. I have lived in New York since 1963, but I miss Montgomery even though it is the most boring place on the planet.

Montgomery Native here. Let me just advise everyone on this city. You can NEVER judge a city solely based on this video. It looks peaceful, and well, that is because this was probably filmed during a weekday when nearly everyone is at work/school. But we aren’t always like this. Look up our crime rate. It’s like our city is wanting to be a miniature Chicago. The crime here is so high, there’s nothing we can do. And unfortunately, most of the crime is organized by the youth. We have a failing school system, so instead of being in a decent place, they’re out on the streets. Hell, even I dropped out of high school because it was almost like school was worse. We had a girl who was shot at Lee high school. And these things happen all the time. I will NEVER let my child go to school in this city. I will move to Prattville if I have to. Also, the unemployment rate is horrific. No one can find a job. And if you do find a job, it’s not enough to pay bills so then you fall into a great amount of debt. Even with a college degree, good luck finding something in that field where you aren’t living paycheck to paycheck. Quick note: Drugs, BIG ISSUE here!!! The heroin Triange starts in Atlanta. Not too far from here, so what does that tell you? It has just been swept under the rug. But that is no surprise, our governor got impeached for the same shit Clinton was doing. So as a replacement we have a homophobia stricken, 1950 thinking, replacement. I will give her mad props for trying to help us since Bentley never did. Still sound like a great place to live at, right?

I currently live in Montgomery, been here all my life (I do want to leave one day tho), it's a beautiful city. I have a love for my city. Not very much to do as far as entertainment but I love the fact that there is history everywhere. The southern hospitality is alive and well, but at the same time people can very nosey. Dexter Av. and commerce street are the only real areas to hangout downtown. Very chill atmosphere... but the city is usually dead by the time midnight rolls around.

Many parents in Montgomery break traffic laws with their children on a regular basis, even on Mother's Day and Father's Day. Many of these parents are civil servants. In the capital of Alabama, youth should actually see law-abiding streets and adults, instead of people ignoring stop signs, jaywalking and speeding, etc. The children of Alabama are hoping that the civil servants are looking for a bright future for them, but if these civil servants continue to behave without a conscience or ethics, then their future has been deeply compromised. Kids, before every family meal, pray out loud, "Lord, help my parents obey traffic laws, I love them!"

I lived in montgomery for 24 years and couldn't wait to get out of that crime infested town. wouldn't advise anyone to move their. I noticed that you didn't mention the huge mall that had to close the doors because the stores were being robbed and thieves stealing the stores blind that they left causing the mall to close, same with the other mall that is about to close down. murders all over the city not just isolated to one main area. cop shot in the face and died just pulling over a person on a simple stop good luck to anyone moving there. this video was done on the weekend or after working hours because it is so dead nothing to do downtown except the mpac theatre when they might have a concert. The FBI ranks Montgomery, with a population of 200,194, ranked 22nd in homicides, 120th in violent crime, 65th in property crime and 77th overall in the nation. GOOGLE IT.

they're moving to the red states cause they can't stand high taxes, but when they do............RAISE OUR TAXES. AL is awesome as long as it keeps it reputation of being conservative.
