Hi, T Lay. So you’ve got a JVC RC-M90? You’ve owned it since it was new and you’d like to keep it from the junk heap? That’s a commendable sentiment - for a boomboxer, of course. (Grin)(Environmentalists should also find that idea commendable: less waste to harm the ecology. And the dwindling number of boombox repairers will concur: more business for them.) Well, if you’re feeling particularly affluent (hint: good-sized stimulus cheques), you could try contacting Teddy Hashee. Maybe you’ve watched some videos of his. He’s probably still living in Bergen County, New Jersey. He’s relatively well-known on KZfaq for his many videos showing him repairing and restoring vintage boomboxes and mini-boomboxes. He also has videos showing him repairing various non-boombox (and, in some cases, non-electrical) devices, although he started speaking only in some of his more recent KZfaq videos, instead of being silent and rarely letting his face show. Yes, he’s a highly skillful repairer and restorer, but he will probably refuse to work on a boombox that he knows or thinks is “dead,” with no sign of activity or power at all, either in battery mode or in plug-in mode (AC or DC power). And I emphasize your “feeling particularly affluent”: he will probably charge you a pile of money. I think that’s partly why The Great Teddy Hashee has repeatedly turned down repair requests from l’il ol’ me, I sigh: probably can’t afford him. (Oh, and did I mention the likely long wait - maybe several months - before he is done working on other customers’ units?) [CONTACT E-MAIL: teddy.hashee@gmail.com] You could also try Hi Tech Service, an electronics-repair shop along Nolensville Pike, Nashville, Tennessee (37211 ZIP code). It’s been operated for over 30 years by Tom Brucker. I hope it’s not a betrayal of confidence to say that he was thinking of calling it a day with running his shop. But I think he’s still in business. Patience is required, though: by his own unabashed admission - in comments of his years ago on a cassette-deck Internet forum - he is not a frantic repairer. He may be a while in replying to your e-mail or in finding time to speak directly with you on the ‘phone, as well as getting around to working on your gear, etc. (He was with me as a customer, I shrug.) [CONTACT E-MAIL: hitech77@earthlink.net] Or you could contact Norman’s Electronics, Inc. (USA)[NEIUSA], located in Suwanee, Georgia (30024 ZIP code). They repaired a big, three-piece, dual-deck Sansui stereo for me earlier in 2020, within a couple months of my buying it. They’re not cheap, but they were relatively prompt and reasonably patient in answering my (very long) e-mail. More happily, they repaired my Sansui a good bit sooner than I was told would likely be the case, what with the backlog of earlier customers, delays from the COVID-19 shutdowns, etc. Of course, as with all technicians, they need the schematics and certain spare parts for a good chance at repairing your gear. Some hopeful news is the fact that they repaired a JVC RC-M90JW earlier in 2020, although I assumed that they had only been repairing home stereos, flat-screen TVs, etc. (I found out about the ‘M90’s repair on their Facebook webpage after I had shipped my 1980s Sansui to them.) [CONTACT E-MAIL: support@neiusa.com; other e-mail addresses exist.] Will you have successfully repaired your RC-M90 yourself by the time you read this very long message, T Lay? Will you have found another repairer to successfully work on your machine? Will you even read this message? (Shrug) In any case, have a good day.
