I searched your channel for my issue but could not find it. I have a JVC HR-S3500U that I bought brand new 25 years ago at Circuit City when I was about 19 years old. I love that machine and have taken good care of it. I am having video output issues. S-Video or Composite gives me the same problem. The picture comes and goes. I have to jiggle or put tension on the cables to get a connection made. I have tried different cables and same issue. Posting on some online forums a few people said cold/cracked solder is the problem. Just wanted to check with you. Watching so many of your videos I know that you know your stuff!! Thanks

Unrelated: our first VHS VCR disengaged from the head drum when in FF, Rewind, and Stop. Except if it was scanning. Interesting video, looking forward to part 2.

I'm glad you found a good use for that DVD player from the last video. The fact that it's wall-mountable is really cool. The clear look you gave it is really nice! I haven't seen that model of JVC VCR before. Oldest one I've used was from 1992.

I had a cat who played fetch. He died at 4 years from something that destroyed his liver. Thanks for the tips on the JVC.

Yeah superglue is preferably sold in small tubes, large tube may seem like a deal but having to use a whole tube of super glue is pretty hard if it's not your job.

What's fun is when those plastic pins only partly dislodge themselves and then you pull all your hair out trying to figure out why the machine won't lock in tracking anymore despite replacing that cap.

Another failure of this JVC chassis, is the plastic pulley on the capstan motor, for the timing belt. Sadly with the time it's split in half, and jump out from the capstan flywheel. JVC make a service kit to replace this pulley. Or the cheap way is glue the old one, very firmly with the threebond.

i always buy the cheapest superglue i can find. usually around 60 cents for 3 small tubes.

Yeah I am pretty sure you worked on this one in the past. I think you replaced the ELNA caps in the power supply and the little PG coupling cap on the drum's PCB.

I'm sure i did as it belongs to my neighbour down in the next block and he is always walking his dog when I am working and pops in for a chat. I have worked on many devices of his and sold him a few that i was getting rid of as well. He has house full of vintage stereo equipment and even ended up with that old Sony projecton set I picked up at the side of the road. I keep telling him any time he wants to get rid of the seaberg jukebox he has in his livjng room to let me know but i am sure that will go to the highest bidder and that certainly won't be me.

LG really missed the chance to make the DVD player into a turntable type design. That would be cool if they made the lid clear or only had a small square where the Lazer is to pass safety checks or smth.

There is no such thing as universal glue. I have used super glue a lot and know that it is not all types of plastic that super glue sticks well to Often the plastic almost always becomes weaker where you glue than it was before. Especially the type of plastic that can withstand a lot of chemicals such as petrol and acetone, superglue does not tend to sit well. On my Ford Mondeo mk4 on trim covers, superglue does not sit very well. Superglue is hard and therefore a bit brittle if you use thin layers. That doesn't mean superglue is useless. superglue works for some things but not everything

Did this look like plastic i was glueing? No it was metal. It doesn't work on nylon for example.

Recently got a JVC VCR (forgot the model no., but early 90's HiFi ones) with erratic behavior. Probably dirty mode switch - easy fix isn't it? Turned out that the mode switch was buried DEEP in the chassis, tightly sandwiched between the main cam gear and the metal frame. I had to literally tear the entire mechanism apart to access that switch and give it a good cleaning - a simple 10 minute work that eventually took the whole day to complete.😵 Although they did invent VHS, but how they overlooked this small but critical design flaw like this is beyond my understanding.

JVC took credit. Sony actually was codevoloper of VHS. It was one of the systems that was rejected. There were 4 systems being worked on by Sony, sanyo, Toshiba, NEC,Panasonic and jvc. The only other one i ever saw was sanyos vcord. Sony's beta was technically the best of the 4 as it was a scales down version of umatic that was already on the market. Everyone signed off on betamax including JVC. They secretly launched the m system that was named after the threading pattern. They renamed it VHS and claimed they devoloped it when it was a collective effort by all the Japanese companies with Sony contributing the most. When Sony launched their first vhs they printed on all the sales literature and brothers that they were co-developers of VHS. Had this not been the case JVC would have sued them but they didn't because they knew that they basically stole the design.

@@12voltvids Now I remember something. Saw some YT videos ages ago about attempting to play Beta tape in VHS machine and vice versa (forgot the link, sorry). To my surprise there's some almost recognizable picture & sound output, therefore they must be not too technically different. And that seems to fit well with your explanation too. So yes JVC would probably "borrow" the same technical principle from Beta during development stage, adding some modification and wrap it up in bigger shell, and release it as VHS. However the actual reason that caused Sony to flop behind would be (imho) their own misdirection, not the technical issue. Anyway they eventually strike back with Betacam format, and literally conquered the studio/professional market ever since. So they're sort of even at the end.😁

@@Nantawat_Kittiwarakul The on-tape format for both were relatively similar and an incremental improvement on earlier formats like umatic. It was with stuff like betacam which was stored as component on tape and later with digital formatst where you got a drastic difference in how the video was stored.
@12voltvids

@@Nantawat_Kittiwarakul betamax drum size is larger which results means the resulting video track will be longer and at a shallower angle. As the track is longer and the head drum is the same the relative tape to head speed is faster. The color under frequency is also different. Betamax used 688 which is the same as 3/4 u-matic. VHS is 629. 8mm was higher at 733khz. When Sony devoloped betamax they were also working on BETACAM format at the same time as a replacement for 3/4". Sony (and everyone else in Japan except Matsushita and their subsidiary JVC, bet ya didn't know that did you? Yes jvc and Panasonic are related just as aiwa and Sony) was on board with a single format and betamax was the chosen format. The unnamed VHS format was shelved or so everyone thought untill surprise it wasn't. Sony as the inventer of beta wanted a royalty for every machine made. JVC gave away the patent on VHS for a single licence fee but no per machine royalty. This allowed VHS to dominate the home video market. They did try to get a professional version of VHS working but it never caught on as they had technical issues and because the tape was larger the resulting camera was larger and heavier for the broadcast format. BETACAM had become an overnight success in broadcaat. The M and M2 didn't do much. A few broadcasters used it because Panasonic gave them equipment trying to dethrone Sony but it didn't work. BETACAM became the world broadcast format. Sony made much more money selling betacam machines than they lost on home beta. It dominated professional and broadcast markets right to the end of tape based formats. It became digital and then HD.
