Yabusame is a traditional Japanese martial art where archers shoot at targets from galloping horses. Performances were always held at shrines and considered to be sacred rituals reserved for men, but in recent years women have begun taking part. This is a result of yabusame’s evolution from ritual to sport, which opened the door to female enthusiasts. Towada City in Aomori now holds an annual, women-only yabusame contest which draws large crowds to enjoy the excitement, skill and colorful traditional costumes of the archers. We follow a 15-year old girl competing against her veteran instructor for the top prize.

@2:15 explains the style. That's really hard on the legs too as if riding at all wasn't doing that enough. I do it on my motorcycle if the cross winds are so strong they make me feel unsteady. Getting my butt off the seat puts all my weight way down low on the pegs. I can only do it for a fraction of a minute at a time though. Those women are obviously strong.

Really good form. I'm a rider here in America and we often practice this position, it takes a lot of strength and balance! Also I always post the trot meaning I stand then sit alternating with every step, which is a common technique. The Japanese style seems unique though, when they go in what we call "two-point", or standing in our stirrups, these riders are keeping their hips lower than what I've learned.

This was actually the original samurai combat system and it lasted for nearly 1000 years before the sword came to symbolise the samurai class. For most of their history the samurai were known for their small tough ponies and their skills with the bow. Samurai would combat each other by manoeuvring their horses around each other while shooting arrows at each other. That’s why samurai armour originally developed only to protect one side of the body - the neck and armpit area on one side being the weak spot, to allow the warrior to draw the bow. The history of samurai armour is basically the history of changing from bow and horse to sword and foot. It’s also why the ambush became the favoured samurai tactic - the trick to samurai combat was to get your horse on your opponent’s weaker armoured left side. A fast, small pony, attacking out of ambush, was always the best way to achieve that tactical advantage. The skills and tradition in this video are far more than what they seem - they influenced how the Japanese practiced and viewed warfare and politics, not to mention social hierarchies, and that influenced Japanese culture all the way up to, and including, world war 2.

As far as I know, 9th to 13th-century samurai went to war with few commoner troops and armed as horse archers. The small size of those armies, and aristocracy's penchant for duels, would make it easier to fit horse archery battles into smaller battlefields. There was also cultural pressure from mainland Asia where the horse archer was uncontested.

Even the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, couldn't help but at least admire him despite their deep hatred for him. He is unique in that he was successful not only in spirituality but also in all worldly affairs. I recommend buying a book of his biography that's written by Muslims as opposed to a book written by someone with a biased opinion of him. You're old enough to make that decision. I believe in you.
