I was thinking the same thing. Or for anybody that has sump pumps, could they use one to charge a battery in a flood condition? So while your sump pump is running, pumping out the basement, it charges a battery so if the power from the street it lost, it will still continue running the pump. There will be some loss there as the pump would draw more than it generates, but it might work.

Huh? Well you have one already, its called a coal filter, literally anyone can do it (cloth, crushed charcoal on top, then sand, then tiny rocks and gravel in an upright bottle). That still leaves microbes and stuff, but you can purify those by running a transparent tube in zigsags through a long bigger mirror tube with UV lights installed in there, it'll purify literally everything... Or just a long set of transparent tubes that run under the sun. Or just boil it.

It depends on where you live, of course, but generally, if you own the land, and the rights to the river, it should be no problem. In any event, you could dig a private canal to run some water away from the river, and into a generator, for personal use. I think it will be more and more common for people wanting to settle more permanently in hard to reach places. My country of Norway has got plenty of those, and rivers and streams to glean electric power from.

So I use solar, but water has the advantage it can deliver power constantly, even at night. But this device would have to be bigger to be able to power a household.
