There were problems getting certain foodstuffs, rationing being the rule of the day, and fats and sugar were on the list. So, he boiled the chickens for the lunch, let the broth cool, scooped off the fat on top, mixed it with molasses and flour, and turned it into cookies for the troops. He told this story to his friend Mort Walker. Mort transformed this into a cartoon character. Cookie was born. His bizarre recipes were put in his comic strip BEETLE BAILEY. Keep bringing up the old recipes. They work for a reason.

My great grandmother use to use wheat germ. She would make delicious tomato sandwiches from the tomatoes she grew in the garden in our back yard and would sprinkle a little salt on them and then a generous sprinkling of wheat germ. I do it to my own tomato sandwiches now. To me it enhances the flavor a bit. I have never tried to use wheat germ for anything else.

That medley of grains.... I bet with a toaster and some sweet butter or cream cheese you could make some amazing toast! My mother used whole wheat flour, wheat germ and rye flour she sweetened it with chopped raisins and then she put chocolate chips in them so we'd eat them. We hated raisins but I recall liking them. She called them breakfast cookies. I always liked using wheat germ in breads. Toasting the bread slices and topped with butter was an aromatic, nutty, buttery treat. Absolutely wonderful. I recall needing Graham flour for one of my breads... It's been a long time, but I seem to remember finding Graham flour at a restaurant supply shop. 🤷🏻 No good to you now and Amazon can provide whatever you want delivered to your door, but in case you find yourself in Ohio in early 1980s, you'll still be able get your rations biscuits. 😊

Wait? Does Kenya also pronounce Graham as gram? Oh, I did a quick bit of research. The k-2 biscuits in the video are Graham biscuits, using Graham flour (made from wheat), but people in the US pronounce it gram. Actual gram flour however is made from chickpeas. If you don't have a lot of wheat germ then you probably aren't also having Graham flour.

When the K Ration was officially adopted in 1942 there were only two types of biscuits: the Defense biscuit and the Graham biscuit. To readily identify the biscuits they were to be inprinted with "K1" (Defense) and "K2" (Graham) and the company's name (or an abbreviation) producing the biscuits. Early K Rations might have three thicker K1 biscuits in a cellophane package instead of four biscuits of regular thickness.
