Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (হোসেন শহীদ সোহ্‌রাওয়ার্দী حسین شہید سہروردی; was a Bengali barrister and politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1956 to 1957 and before that as the Prime Minister of Bengal from 1946 to 1947 in British India. In Pakistan, Suhrawardy is revered as one of the country's founding statesmen. In Bangladesh, Suhrawardy is remembered as the mentor of Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Suhrawardy was a scion of one of British Bengal's most prominent Muslim families, the Suhrawardy family. His father Sir Zahid Suhrawardy was a judge of the high court in Bengal. Suhrawardy studied law in Oxford. After returning to India, he joined the Indian independence movement during the 1920s as a trade union leader in Calcutta. He was initially associated with the Swaraj Party. He joined the All India Muslim League and became one of the leaders of the Bengal Provincial Muslim League (BPML). Suhrawardy was elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1937. In 1946, Suhrawardy led the BPML to decisively win the provincial general election. He served as Bengal's last premier until the Partition of India. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, leader of the Muslim League, supported an independent Bengal; this was strongly opposed by the Congress Party. In 1947, the Bengal Assembly voted to partition the territory. Suhrawardy briefly remained in India after partition to attend to his ailing father and manage his family's property. He eventually moved to Pakistan and divided his time between Karachi (Pakistan's federal capital) and Dhaka (capital of East Pakistan).
In Dhaka, Suhrawardy emerged as the leader of the Bengali-dominated Awami League which became the principal opposition party to the Pakistan Muslim League.
হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দীর জন্ম ১৮৯২ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ৮ই সেপ্টেম্বর বর্তমান পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মেদিনীপুরের এক সম্ভ্রান্ত মুসলিম পরিবারে। তাঁর পিতা স্যার জাহিদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী ছিলেন কলকাতা হাইকোর্টের বিচারক। মা ছিলেন নামকরা উর্দু সাহিত্যিক খুজাস্তা আখতার বানু।
তিনি ১৯১৩ সালে আইন পড়তে যান ইংল্যাণ্ডে। অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে আইনশাস্ত্রে বিসিএল ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন । ১৯১৮ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তিনিও গ্রে'স ইন থেকে বার এট'ল ডিগ্রী অর্জন এবং আইনজীবী হিসাবে কিছুদিন কাজও করেন ব্রিটেনে। এরপর ১৯২০ সালে কলকাতায় ফিরে আসেন এবং আইন পেশায় নিয়োজিত হন।
১৯২২-এ চিত্তরঞ্জন দাসের স্বরাজ পার্টিতে যোগ দেওয়ার মাধ্যমে রাজনৈতিক জীবন শুরু হয় হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দীর। 'স্বরাজ পার্টি' ছিল তৎকালীন 'ভারতীয় জাতীয় কংগ্রেস দল'-এর একটি শাখা। ১৯২৩ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে এই দলটি বেঙ্গল প্যাক্ট স্বাক্ষরে তার যথেষ্ট ভূমিকা রেখেছিল।
