I totally agree with Tom. This game is fantastic and hits a sweet spot. It is easy to set up and teach, but it's one of the few 'fillers' that leaves me feeling strategically satisfied. And one of the best review factors: This game took my teenager from "Oh Mom, do we have to play!" to "Wait! It's already over!?" This is one game I would love to see some small expansion modules for at some point. I know it might not totally make sense thematically but I love the cool color spectrum, so it would be neat to see optional blue, purple, maybe even green fish? Or if not the fish then some decorations that don't depend on color matching with the fish.

Thanks for the review. I am a gamer/collector with a pond and raise koi. I have wanted a koi game for 3 years and nearly bought the game Koi about a week ago. Decided against it and then stumbled on to Kohaku. Immediately ordered and just received it yesterday. The tiles are even more stunning in person than you describe and there are over 100 of them. They all have a 3d effect to them as well. For example, the lower part of the turtle body is painted on the bottom layer of the acrylic and the top half is painted on the surface of the acrylic with a raised ripple effect at the transition. Incredible. Maybe an expansion with some Heron (birds) that can be played to eat other players koi and thus take away points. Can't wait to play outside with some real koi in the background. Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much William! Glad you like it! Herons made an appearance in an early version of the game, but we ultimately took them out to keep it a bit more peaceful. But who knows? We might find a good way to bring them back!

If siting around forever scoring up points at the end is the worst part then it’s definitely going on my wishlist!

I had the honor of having the designer teach this game to me at a ProtoSpiel about 4 years ago and this game stood out the most from all of the other games I tried. I’m glad the game got published.

Sounds like Calico, but with pretty fishy tiles. I like it!

Kohaku is better in a sense of choices when drafting tiles. Setting up big scoring turns is so satisfying! Planning is so much easier to do. In Caclico, I felt at the mercy of the randomness of the tiles that came out and it felt pretty bad when the tile you desperately need never shows and the bag is still very full of tiles.
