K&N Washable Home HVAC Filter Install | MERV 11 Filter

In this video we install a K&N Washable, Reusable HVAC filter. Will this be the last HVAC filter I ever have to buy? We also purchased the K&N HVAC filter cleaner (sold separately). Throughout the year we change the HVAC filter about every 3 months, so over time the cost of filters does add up.

Our filter is 14x24x1 but K&N makes a washable reusable filter in most common HVAC filter sizes.
We’ve used K&N washable filters in many cars over the years and in recent years I’ve also used K&N oil filters in my Jeep XJ and Subaru Outback. So when I heard that K&N was making washable HVAC air filters, I was immediately interested.
Unlike the K&N filters for automotive, the goal is not to flow more air, make more horsepower or torque.
The goal is three-fold:
1. Move up to a MERV 11 rated filter and trap smaller particles in the air (we were previously using MERV 10 filters)
2. Stop throwing used filters in the landfill every 3 months.
3. Save money longterm (break-even around 2 years in)
Before dropping in the new filter we do a quick vacuum with the Shop-vac.

MERV is an acronym for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Filters are rated 1-16 with the higher the MERV value the more capable the filter is at trapping smaller particles.

I recently bought 2 filters that way I can alternate when I clean one, switch it out. Because I had to make the return air can myself, it’s not a perfect size. My house is 113 years old and when we bought it had an old floor furnace. I dropped that out and had it framed smaller and had to buy a new floor furnace grill for it. Whistles just a little when the A/C is running but not too bad. I like them and I got them on sale for $32 each 👍🏻

Good concept but several tests using an anemometer conclude the K&N restrict too much airflow and stress your HVAC system.

It helps filter better if you read the French side first. I've used KN along with other cleanable filters for autos for years. We'll try furnace and see.

Just picked up a pair. I hot glued a magnet to each corner to hold it up.

It's better if you read the French first. I've used them for autos many years, great choice. Not sure about the furnace yet.

I just ordered one. I’ve seen some reviews saying it restricts airflow too much. I know everyone’s HVAC system is different. But have you noticed a difference in airflow? Also any update? Are you still using that filter to this day? Lastly, was the filter pretty firm or flimsy?

Jon, yes still using it, so far I’m happy to not being throwing more filters in the landfill. My airflow seems the same as before, perhaps going to an even higher MERV rating than this might create a change but I have not noticed any. The filter is very sturdy, and the plastic frame makes it a bit heavier than a typical cardboard filter which tend to be flimsy. I had to place some small squares of weatherstripping foam in the corners as my filter was rising with the suction of the fan and then falling when the cycle would end (just to make up a few mm of distance as my intake is in the ceiling) overall I’ve been happy, thanks for the reminder I think I need to clean it, good luck!

How have you Cleaned it? Dust it off with vacuum then spray it with cleaner spray?

Tyler, yes cleaned it several times already. The process involves hitting the filter with the K&N filter cleaner, letting that sit, then rinsing thoroughly from the clean side of the filter with hose and then letting it dry. Pretty simple. Overall happy with the decision to move to a reusable filter.

Been using Filtrete 2800 20x30 MERV14 for years. Having a lot of pets, living in a dusty area (Santa Clarita,CA), and running the blower fan 24/7 to control allergies I have to replace them every month or when I notice the restriction increase. At $75 for 2 filters on Amazon pre tax that’s $450 a year! I’m looking forward to saving money with this but am I little worried about the lower MERV of 11. Hopefully we won’t notice since we also have air purifiers too. Time will tell. How are you liking yours?

It’s been good, we’ve now been running this filter nearly 2.5 years. I believe it has saved me some money already which is nice, but like you we also run Filtrete Hepa air purifiers in several rooms to remove dust and reduce allergy symptoms so between these and lots of vacuuming we do our best to manage dust!

So how do you like it so far? I just came back from Home Depot and Merv13 filters set me back $44 for 2.

So far so good, just about due to be cleaned for the first time. After the initial install I put some foam weatherstripping pieces on the corners to shim it in place. The plastic frame is more rigid and heavy than a throw-away cardboard frame filter and it would get sucked up a couple millimeters when the fan kicked on, and then you could hear it drop as the fan turned off. The foam took up that slack.

@@MattsGarageMiscDIY Yea, same problem here. You need to have these wedged into the frame so they don't clank when the air turns off. Usually there are tabs in the airbox fame you can bend out to hold it.

i just cleaned mine, and i thought it was dry enough to go in, it completely restricted air flow...is this just cause its not fully dry? did you notice that at the beginning when you first got it?

I don’t know. I clean it every 3 months but I do let it dry completely before putting it back.
