Did you know Korea shares a substantial heritage in India, especially in terms of language and culture? It is believed that there are more than 500 similar words between Korean and Tamil. What is more interesting is that, these words don’t just sound similar but also share the same meaning! Even cultural similarities are seen between the two distant lands, after all, it dates back to the first century when an Indian princess married a Korean King and started a dynasty. Some other examples include the inclusion of rice in daily diet, dance forms, and relationship between people of different ages.
Tamil is a Dravidian language and mainly spoken by the Tamil people of South Asia. In India, Tamil is primarily spoken in Tamil Nadu and spoken by significant groups in other Indian states including Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tamil is the first amongst the 22 scheduled languages in the Constitution of India, to be classified as a classical language of India and is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world.
In addition to India, Tamil also has official status in Sri Lanka and Singapore. In Malaysia, Tamil is used as one of the languages of education along with English, Malay and Mandarin.
