This time we talk about watering shohin bonsai (小品盆栽) during midsummer. Shohin bonsai refers to little trees with roots confined to little pots like this, which not only need to be watered everyday in this season, but at least watered twice or even three times everyday. Because it is so hot outside these days, we may tend to "sha-sha-sha-" just rush through watering. [0:40] This guy has moss attached on top of the soil. When I look at it now, because of the degree to which the moss is dry, I can kind of guess that the inside has dried as well. For trees with sizes like this, we must make sure that water gets to them thoroughly. So how do we water them correctly? [1:10] The tree now feels very light. In this case we take the little tree, and dunk it into a pool of water like this, where "bugu-bugu-bugu-" bubbles will rise. We can take them out when there are not more bubbles. The time it takes for a good soak depends on the trees. For those which have not been repotted for a while, it takes longer time for the bubbles to come out since it is harder for water to penetrate. In the case of this tree, it has not been that long since the last repot, maybe only 1-2 years. Therefore, it did not take long for the water to soak through, and bubbles are emerging in a rather spirited allegro. It really didn't take us to much time to get the water in and completely soak the roots in this case. [1:56] Though this is definitely the most correct method, it is still a huge undertake to do this to every single tree. When water has completely soaked through a tree, the weight should change significantly. For example, this tree feels completely different before and after the soak. Therefore it is a good practice to know the weight of the tree when it is wet, and then when we go lift it, if we find it lifts in a surprisingly light way, we will be able realize "ah~ this is completely dry!" Then we can proceed to our pool of water and dunk it. Soak for several minutes and life it carefully. [2:40] In the summer, all kinds of tree, be it shimpaku juniper or other deciduous trees, dried up easily. It is especially hard for water to penetrate all the way to the middle of the root mass.
