You sit in jail until you can get a lawyer or a judge can appoint one for you if you can't afford one. You'll be in jail until a lawyer can talk to you, but the detectives can't talk to you until the lawyer says they can. So, you don't get to walk out of there if you request an attorney, but you also don't give them everything to use against you.
