Ka-Bar Becker BK2 Companion Knife
.....
Generation 2 model
Developed by Ethan Becker.
Quarter inch think.
Very wide blade
Very good, common man price of $70 on Amazon.
- Weighs about a 1lb 16oz
- The Blade is 5 one quarter inch in length
- Overall length 10 and one half inch
- Drop point blade
- 1095 Cro-van steel
- Flat Grind
- Grivory handle
- Made in the USA
Has the extended tang that allows you to use this knife as a chisel.
Handle is what I would consider fair :
- Comfortable but slick
- But the shape of the handle will prevent it from flying out of your hand
- If you take the two halves a part you have a fairly good sized cavity to place small survival items if that is what you wish to do.
- Can replace with micarda handles which many say are much, much better
Great for batoning
Has a drop point
Came with a very poor kydex sheath.
- Some love it, some hate it. I hate it!
- Very poor balance
- Very high retention -- Common complaint
- The Generation 1 sheath was said to be too loose, Gen 2 is too tight.
- Ambidextrous : can be adjusted with the screws
Replaced with a custom Slim Hawk Skystorm sheath
- 2 -- 3 weeks wait time
- Beautiful quality
- $64 with free shipping
- Do a search for Skystorm-leather
- 100% positive feedback
- As you can see he is an artisan.
Very, Very sharp. Great for slicing, batoning and limbing. If you are a hunter, it's great for skinning.
- When batoning that width will just about shatter the wood.
- Really works well.
- Keep the width of your target less than 4 inches and you will be in good shape.
- Blade holds a very sharp edge
- I have literally beaten the hell out of this blade and it looks brand new.
- Still razor sharp
- This is a blade where you could baton through a 4 inch log and then turn around and skin a rabbit. Perfect all around bushcraft blade.
- When it comes to all the factors one would consider in a knife there is no comparison. It will take the abuse and still continue to perform at the highest level.
-
Overall it's an amazing knife and one that I would highly recommend. It's a jack of all trades sort of blade and you need to remember that. When you have a knife like that, it never truly excels at any one task; instead it's highly capable for all chores.

Awesome review Luke. I have the BK-16, bought it because of your preview of it, I finally have the sheath broken in and I added a small sharpening stone to the sheath pocket. It's my tweener knife, just the right size. Love it. Thanks again friend, S&H.

A good review Luke. They all look like great knives. I have a sheath coming from SkyStorm and can't for it. Thanks for sharing.

I couldn't agree more about the sheath. When I got my BK-2 I left the sheath in the plastic and sold it on ebay. I have been using Mora knives since 1969 and a good Mora of your choice with a Bk-2 and you have a great outfit. This has been a find review of a good product. You are welcome in my forest anytime. Happy Trails,

I have the bk2, customized mine though. Stripped off the coating and opted for micarta scales, put a 90 % spine on it to strike a ferro rod. I customized the factory sheath too, looks and performs completely different than before, I'm very pleased with the results.. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinion on this awesome blade, I appreciate it.

Great review. I like how you compared it to the other blades. I agree the sheath is rubbish and I may get a leather one in the future for mine. Definitely looking forward to other knife reviews! Can't wait for the spyderco bushcrafter one. Take Care.

I have seen some pics of some custom handle work with a dremel tool and looks pretty awesome. I don't think I have the patience for it though. I can see ranger bands working nicely though. Take care my friend.

I agree that the belt strap was quite annoying, that's why I removed, which is really easy btw. Just replaced it with a $10 tek-lock which works wonderfully, great package. $70 for leather sheath seems too expensive to me when the knife itself is cheaper. Only valid negative of the knife that I experienced is the thick blade coating that glues small chips of wood to your blade

In the future I may replace the handle with micarda as I've heard only good things about that alteration. Where did you get the nylon sheath from? By the way the Crewman looks great! I'm interested in the Zytel handle.

I would suggest either Micarda scales or wooden ones. You can find BK scales on ebay and on Amazon amongst a bunch of other sites. If you need some help finding some I can send you some links through PM.

I have heard of people adding texture to the stock grivory handles with a dremel tool, making dimples in the handle surface. I have also heard of people putting ranger bands on the handle to enhance the grip. And then there is always changing to the micarta scales (which I did). Love the micarta - in my opinion the knife should come with micarta standard.

I really don't mind the Grivory handle, the way it fits my hand, I have no problem what so ever absolutely stays in my hand, now the sheath, they could of made it easier to get the knife out, I literally struggle getting it out. so I got a spec-ops nylon sheath, fits like a glove, I can't wait for the BK-10 to come out soon.

I find that Grivory is a very strong, tough and long lasting material, and I got the sheath at MidwayUSA they are pricey I paid $50.00 plus shipping, great sheath though.

Very very very good blade. I agree sir I have a gen 3 bk2 well at least that's what I call it with laser etched markings instead of stamped and a rough epoxy finish instead of the smooth paint so I would assume that would make it a gen 3 right .... Ohh and just spend $15 on a teklok pop out rivets of the nylon strap teklok bolts right into place that's better than spending $70 on a new sheath altogether . Thanks for the vid

Hi, i'm from Perú, just suscribed to your channel. I have the LMF 2 and the BK 2, no problem sharpening the LMF, but the Kabar is a diferent story, maybe you have some tips for sharpening the BK 2? Thanks in advance for your Help
@TheOutdoorGearReview
@TheOutdoorGearReview 10 жыл бұрын
Hey there pal, there are a number of different ways to sharpen it. You can use stones such as the DMT Diafold Diamond with the Magna Guide. Lansky two sided works well too. The Spyderco Tri Angle System is pretty popular. I hope that helps.

As heavy as this knife is for the blade length Id rather carry the Ontario SP-50, paired with a smaller knife of course. That leather looks great.
@semco72057
@semco72057 5 жыл бұрын
That is a very good knife and one which will last it's user a lifetime if treated properly. The sheath is junk due to the way it is built, and designed. It is difficult to get the knife out of it which isn't that bad for me. I would not buy a leather sheath which cost $70.00 dollars as it is a ripoff and the knife cost that much.

I baton, but I also agree with you. I somewhat enjoy batoning, but objectively it’s pretty stupid. I’ve got a Fiskars Hatchet and that processes wood 10x better than any knife ever could, and doesn’t have any possibility of snapping/chipping/failing in the ways that knives do. At the same time though, hatchets are less versatile. Wood processing is just about the only thing you’d want to do with a hatchet. If you get a knife like the BK2 though, you can process wood, carve, whittle, open boxes, cook, field dress your hunt, and a whole range of other tasks. If you’re wanting to pack light and hike out with one tool to do it all, getting a knife that can baton makes sense. We all know the saying, but not everyone knows the full version: “Jack of all trades, master of none, but often better than the master of one.”
@IlmarBeekman
@IlmarBeekman 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. But isn’t it a good idea to be skilled at it if you don’t have a hatchet? When you are hiking, carrying a ton of tools will weigh you down very quickly. Having the option and the know how could be very handy if you gotta split kindling to make camp.

soooo... you don't like the stock sheath because you have to spend an extra .5 seconds to snap the strap on it to make it not flop around but you don't mind spending x amount of dollars on a leather sheath that requires x amount of upkeep for durability? seems like a wash to me... just sayin.
@TheOutdoorGearReview
@TheOutdoorGearReview 10 жыл бұрын
It may seem silly until you're actually in the bush using it. You'll see what I mean. Most people hate the sheath that comes with this knife. Be well.
@nerdsanctuary8307
@nerdsanctuary8307 10 жыл бұрын
Actually I have found that if you have the sheath lashed to your leg it doesn't flop around and works quite well. In practice the flexible nature of the nylon loop is a positive as it allows the thing to move around with your leg. It's quite an adequate sheath.
@TheOutdoorGearReview
@TheOutdoorGearReview 10 жыл бұрын
Mucky Pops If you wish to lash it to your leg that will certain help with the overall balance issues but my preference is not to do this. In my opinion it's a sheath but not a very good one. Do a quick search on the net will reveal even greater issues with the sheath than just the overall poor balance issues.
