In This Episode we talk about Ilha da Queimada Grande, also known as Snake Island, is a small, remote island located off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. It measures approximately 43 hectares in size and is known for its incredibly high population of venomous snakes, particularly the critically endangered Bothrops insularis, also known as the golden lancehead viper. In fact, this island is considered one of the most snake-infested places on Earth, with an estimated one snake per square meter.
Due to the dangers posed by the venomous snakes, access to Ilha da Queimada Grande is highly restricted, and it is off-limits to the general public. The Brazilian government has imposed strict regulations to protect both the snakes and any potential visitors.
The snakes on the island have evolved over time to adapt to their unique environment, primarily feeding on migratory birds that stop on the island during their journeys. Their venom is extremely potent, making any encounter with them potentially life-threatening to humans.
Ilha da Queimada Grande serves as a critical habitat for the golden lancehead viper and is a subject of interest for scientific research. However, the island remains a largely untouched and mysterious place, a testament to the incredible diversity of life that can exist in even the most inhospitable of environments.
