RIP Maestro - Cliburn communicated so much in this piece. What a lesson in dynamics. Word is he learned Kabalevsky's Rondo in A Minor in one week!

I am practicing now for one month and it will probably last another month. Learning it by heart is the difficult part for me. It is not so difficult technically speaking. But I get addicted to it. Practicing is a real pleasure. I need two more pages to lean by heart and then a little bit more on the runs. But it really makes such fun to play it. Super!!!

Jaynet Tagami word is false; Cliburn was notorious for needing years to learn new repertoire. The 62 winner, Ogden, could sightread and memorize in one read.

Kabalevsky wrote this for the competition and the contestants were given a relatively short time to learn it. I believe the composer was there, possibly as a judge.

This piece was writter for the competition as a required piece, so Cliburn had the same time than all other contestants to learn it.

Forcing people to memorize is just plain toxic. It forces people to learn to play the piece in one way, because if they try others they'll scramble their brain up really badly. The thrill of sight-reading is that each performance is an unique journey.

The fact that he learned this piece in less than a week makes it even more impressive.

Kabalevsky really pushed out the romantic/virtuoso boat for this competition piece - here played with great bravura (and a few wrong notes) by Van Cliburn!

Holy fireworks. What a performance. You could also hear the crappy piano going more out of tune as he proceeded through the music. At some point it sounds like the composer has it in mind to break the piano, with so much smashing. A pounder like Lazar Berman probably would break strings. An amazing piece full of sharp shards, soft smooth pebbles and combustion enough to put the listener into low earth orbit. Wow. As far me ever being able to play this? Only at 1/4 the speed, I'm afraid.

@tuberobotto How odd that my complimentary remark about the music and Van Cliburn's peformance of it has been read as a criticism ...

I can understand that some people concentrate on errors. I have to admit that I detect "many" errors, now that I am practicing it myself. But the errors are not important, the music which is transported is fantastic.

i honestly feel that the mistakes add to the piece.

@paulprocopolis Hurray for the wrong notes! You on the other hand, aren't paying attention to what is utmost in this performance - the music and Cliburn's feeling of it and his delivery. Don't be petty and immature and lastly, don't be dogmatic. Chillax and enjoy!
