About Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan
Shujaat Husain Khan is one of the greatest North Indian classical musicians of his generation. He belongs to the Imdad Khan gharana of the sitar and his style of playing sitar, known as the gayaki ang, is imitative of the subtleties of the human voice.
Shujaat Khan's musical pedigree extends seven generations. He is the son and disciple of the great sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan. His grandfather, Ustad Inayat Khan, his great-grandfather, Ustad Imdad Khan, and his great-great-grandfather, Ustad Sahebdad Khan, were all leading artists of their respective generations.
Khan's musical career began at the age of three when he began practicing on a specially made small sitar. By the age of six, he was recognized as a child prodigy and began formal performances.
Shujaat has performed at all of the prestigious music festivals in India and has toured extensively through the world. Captivating audiences with his unique style of sitar play, his exceptional voice, and his intuitive and spontaneous approach to rhythm.

Finally, the time will come when each and every one of us has to turn into ashes. "aant mae sabko mitti mae hi milna ihoga ." Each and everything will be left behind, our arrogance, our deeds. Ustaad Ji wonderfully created an ambiance for us to realize the reality of life. My eyes are still wet.....

हमका उढ़ाये चदरिया चलती बिरिया राम नाम जब निकसन लागे उलट गयी रे दो नयन पुतरिया (पुतलियाँ) भीतर से जब बहार आये, छूट गयी सब महल अटरिया, चार जने मिल जब खाट उठाये, रोवत ले चले डगर-डगरिया, कहत कबीर सुनो भाई साधो, संग चले बस सूखी लकडिय। This song talks about the final and ultimate truth of life - death. At the end of the day, everything you do, everything you accomplish, everything you collect (hoard) - is all worthless! You just die, leaving everything behind. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do anything. It tells you, rather asks you, to get your focus right. Do things that will make your name (and in turn you) immortal. Rest everything - material or otherwise - is perishable. Just like your (physical) body.

I love this ‘gayaki ang’ style of sitar playing of the Etahwa Gharana. The sitar should sing. Khan sahib plays the sitar just like his father, the great Ustaad Vilayat Khan. Indeed this style of sing-song sitar playing is now known as Vilayatkhani.
