AR10 vs M14 system, which one is better? We attempt to show a few reasons why the KAC SR25/AR10 systems was able to finally beat out the M14 sniper /DMR variants in the US arsenal.
Eugene Stoner's AR10 initially lost the contract to the M14 for the U.S. military's primary rifle, and initially came back as the M16 in the Vietnam era.
Years later, the M14 had been relegated to a pure DMR role, and Stoner worked with Reed Knight Jr. to return the AR10/SR25 system to to compete with the M21/Mk14 systems... and succeeded.

Having shot the M14 in Afghanistan and SR-25/M-110 in Iraq, the AR wins hands down IMO. After returning fro my first Afghan tour in 03 I went ahead and spent the money to "clone" my M1A into what we were using. While fairly accurate it was expensive and I also noticed the same drift to the left when I heated the gun up too fast. After one of my Iraq tours I accepted that the AR platform is inherently more accurate and easier to go with when doing the DMR route with a semi-auto. I now shoot my MK12 build in competitions and it has been both bullet proof and a tack driver. My M1A has been converted back to its original configuration as a iron sighted battle rifle. Now I am not bashing the M1A/M14 and still really enjoy shooting mine whenever I get the chance but the truth is that the AR is just a better platform.

The ar10 is definitely better but the m110 kinda sucks those 5r barrels are pretty trash, check out blackhole weaponry, they make 416stainless 3r polygonal rifling that is constantly sub moa after the breakin period of about 80rounds.

I used the M14 in Afghanistan in '03 also, but the problems I had was that they had wood stocks and 3.5x ACOGs used as a DMR. Then the EBR M14 came out and it was way more efficient. I used the M110 SASS in Iraq as my primary sniper rifle over the M24 and loved the capabilities it gave us. It saved my life a few times. I was with Bco 3/504PIR in Afghanistan '03, Iraq '04, and Iraq '08. All the Way, brother!!

Agreed about the 3.5 and wood stocks. Personally I thought the 3.5 ACOG was the wrong optic from the get go and seeing so many guys do the ad hoc 100mph tape hump to get the right eye relief seemed so ludicrous. Strike Hold brother and take care.

@Centurian318 The HK rifles have as much parts commonality with the AR-18 as the Garand does with a Kalashnikov, in other words: none. The rifles they do have much more in common with is the AR 10/15 platforms. Lots of parts interchangeability there, like the entire lower receivers, triggers group, stocks.

cjhyde78 Hydrostatic shock theory is bunk to the best of my knowledge. 5.56 with the right bullets can create a large permanent cavity though, especially 77 gr OTM And yes 55 gr and normal 62 gr M855 out of short barrels is sub-optimal but there already are loads that are effective even on SBRs.

Another thing thing to keep in mind when comparing M14s with M14 EBRs: The M14/M1A trigger is designed to be pulled in more of an upward direction, and the original trigger design is not user friendly when a pistol grip is used. The M14 EBR trigger shoe developed for the M14EBR-RI is wider & longer, with more surface area. The steel M14 EBR trigger shoe is designed with the correct angle required to direct the trigger pull more to the back than up... The trigger pull feels natural & lighter with the M14 EBR shoe installed. Sadly, the M14 EBR trigger shoe was only issued on the Crane MK14 Mod 2 EBR.

Great Video, I carried the M14 EBR in Kandahar, Afghanistan 2011 - 2012. Our unit sniper's had the new KAC SR25, they said it was a good weapon, but it would malfunction from time to time. The M4 Carbine (5.56) was more reliable. Other then the M14 being almost as heavy as a SAW, it worked good for us, as far as being reliable. It was for sure a force multiplier much like CAS and Mortors, but with the little amount of training we had on the system a better optic with a ACSS type reticle would have helped immensely. We had a mil-dot 2-10 power Leopold's, guessing the range to insurgents under stress was nearly impossible. We mostly just walked our shots in and let guy's go that we didn't think we could hit. They basically handed us the rifle, gave us a 2 HR hip-pocket class on it and said "Good luck."

9-Hole Reviews we had SR25/MK11, pre M110, in northern Afghanistan in 2006-7. Then the M110 in Iraq 2010-11. I didn’t have any problems with either. From what I understand the goal with switching to H&K was to reduce size and weight. With the adoption of the M2010 they wanted to make the M110 into a spotter weapon that doesn’t stick out as a sniper rifle.

@@miletello1 The M14 would have been a good rifle... if they'd issued it in 1940. It was too far behind the curve to be a good rifle. The AR10 and AR15 eclipsed it by a huge margin. For the time period it was used in, it was trash. The KAC M110 isn't quite what I'd call a "ground-up" design. It's ultimately a modification of the AR10 (by being a 7.62 NATO redesign of the AR15). And really, it's the "direct impingement" (I really hate that term, because it's not true DI if you have a piston like these rifles do, but... everybody says it) system that makes the AR so capable of good accuracy. It isn't hard at all to build an MOA rifle on the AR platform. Buy a good barrel, free float, make sure it's not horrendously over-gassed and feed it good ammo - done. A build you can do at home.

The M14 rifle was never designed to shoot MOA and scoped rifle technology, especially for semi autos was very new at the time of its induction. Goes to show just about any rifle, with enough time, money and technology can be made to shoot accurately. The M110, although not originally designed for this role if you count its origins as the AR10, has much more going for it from a design standpoint(ease of scope mounting, free float barrel, ergonomics). I own an LRB medium weight M14 and experience the same issues you have, but until that barrel heats up considerably its just as accurate as anything else. Its still completely practical for its intended role and more than qualified for civilian or police marksmen who realistically will never find themselves in a situation that degrades accuracy due to heat. Would be interesting to see how a heavy weight barrel would fare on the M14 when things heat up.

@@9HoleReviews Op rod has a 'twang'? Grease the op rod guide rod inside the spring you're hearing and you'll hear no 'twang'. Your review was alright, but I can't stand reviews that pretend to be impartial, and then shit all over the thing they obviously have a set against. I'm not saying technology hasn't evolved, and that the 110 isn't better even, I'm saying I think you maybe don't know as much about the m1a/m14/m21 as you may think if your rifle is making creaking/twanging/scraping noises. It's like a discovery channel documentary... entertaining for those who don't know, and slightly annoying and lacking in backround info (how the rifle was maintenanced) for those interested to actually learn something.

I enjoy the platform myself Marcus; a few minor tweaks and I turned mine into a scout rifle. I'm not trying to hit 1000 yards with a Socom, but you can hit 500 or less, at will, fairly rapidly. As it sits my rifle is just a shade under 10lbs, and the last time I shot it to 'failure' (any failure), it went 900+ rounds without issue. Grease in the correct places makes it feel like butter, and SE muzzle brake brings the recoil down to 2-3x that of a .223 out of a 16in .308...dreams can come true 🤣

1st, the M14 system will never go away. There is a significant flaw in the system with a heated barrel but this system will not go away. Future budget cuts will most likely force the military back to the system. The M39 EMR (USMC modernized version of the M21) cost $4,000 compared to the SR-25/M110 $12,000. Then the M110A1 will only go in price. Shorter barrel length will only make the rifle less accurate at longer ranges, which the Army says that they need help with. Funny that the USMC never complains about that. I also find that the M14 system is more reliable than the M110 system, especially when the suppressor is mounted and all of the gases blow back into the bolt carrier group. The M110 is based off of the AR system. I do not know enough about the M110A1 piston system yet but I am sure that it will be more reliable than the direct gas system but will probably have grouping shifts with a heated barrel. No means that I am saying that the M110 or the M110A1 are bad rifles because that will be a complete lie if I say so. I am just saying that M14 system is a cost effective system.

I have an AR-10 and MK-14 EBR and M1A Supermatch. I don't have the point of impact shift issue with any of my M1A platforms. The front end can be accurrized by unitizing the gas block. All guns have pros and cons. Personally, I like both platforms but I think the AR-10 platform is less fussy about getting good results. It's easier to shoot with a scope IMO. But, for a all around "battle rifle" I think it's hard to beat an M1A platform. The open sights configuration has got to be one of the best available. So, it comes down to "philosophy of use". If you need a SASS rifle go with the SASS rifle, If you need a battle rifle, go with the M1A. I find it's hard to make up my mind sometimes and that's why I have both.
@9HoleReviews
@9HoleReviews 5 жыл бұрын
This M21 was accurized by an AMU warrant officer who used to do M21 conversions for the Army. The gas system has been unitized. We didn't observe the POI shift until we seriously heat stressed the system with a high volume of precision fire. On "slower" fire courses, we were able to achieve sub MOA accuracy with it. That being said, not many people in the civilian world need to push that type of volume of fire down range, but the M14 systems are immensely more expensive to accurize.

@@immikeurnot funny,? afganistan vets report that the enemy learned to stay beyond the m16's range and the acquiring of M14 dmr gave them the extra range to engage and actually kill those that were hit. I suspect the armorer goofed on the bedding job in the rifle used which caused the zero shift. Thousands of m14 shooters have competed at 600 yds and scored well 20 shots in 20 minutes or less (no zero shifts) The claims based on the above M14 don't match up to records over years. The M110 wins because they can be basically just be assembled and not extensively match conditioned.

The move away from the M-21 to the M-110 was a well informed one. I have built and re-built M-21's for the 2/75 Ranger in 1984/86 at Fort Lewis Washington. While they were adequate for there time they we extremely labor intensive to build and maintain. When Knights industry with Stoner introduced the SR-25, I for one breathed a sigh of relief. The SR-25 was and still is superior in every way measurable. The ease with which they are built and maintained, not to mention the far lower total cost. This fact sets in stark contrast to the older M-21's they replaced.

I would take an M14 over the AR10 any day, because I've been shooting M1/A's style rifles since I was 9-10 years old, but the SR25 is definitely a more adaptable platform, lighter, and more ergonomic for sure, and overall it is better, but years of shooting M1 Style Rifles, I'm just more comfortable, and confident with them. SR25 is definitely better though, but not enough trigger time behind one to become accustomed to it like I am with the M14/1A. Also entry into the SR25 is much more expensive then a standard M1A, so it will be awhile before my poorer ass can make the switch lol!

I feel like a lot of the disappointment and vitriol about accurized m14/m1a rifles (or really the m14 in general) come from trying to shove it into positions it wasn't really meant for, like sniping and automatic fire. Keep it as an infantry rifle like an M1 or at most a dmr and it's a good rifle, just marred by it's past with all the wrangling, early QC issues, lies, politics and under the table money exchanges. That said, T25 > T44 in terms of weight and design considerations. A scaled down, mini-14 sized version would be a nice bit of competition to Ruger's tiny-14.

Very good comparison, if a bit predictable. The M21 is a modified battle rifle whereas the M110 is a dedicated DMR built for the ground up for that role: one is stretching a design and the other is doing what it was designed for. What I want to know is why shift away from the M110? Is it because it is too large or is it a performance issue? The suppressor does make it look cumbersome, but, I don’t see an issue grand enough to switch over to a brand new rifle.
